Hello everyone,

I am starting to think about booking our big trip next year. We are a family of four and the kids will be 5 & 7 at the time of travel. Does anyone have any recent experience of hotels which would fit the following list -

  1. short transfer ie speedboat, not seaplane, from Male airport
  2. excellent kids club
  3. all inclusive option with a good number of restaurant options

It will be our first and probably only time visiting the Maldives so hoping to tap into the fab Mumsnet hive mind! Thank you x

A budget would be helpful as pricess vary so much.
Would you like a reef for snorkelling?
Meeru is a pretty lower range resort and is about 45 minutes boat transfer. Very family friendly with great facilities for families. There is no house reef but they do provide free trips to a reef nearby. They also have 2 bedroom villas.
Oblu select at Sengali is a more upmarket (expensive) resort that is a short transfer.
Cinnamon Velifushi would also be worth looking at at a lower price point.
If budget is larger Ozen reserve Bolifushi would be an excellent choice.
Get some ideas from websites such as travel republic and destination2 as they have a good selection of resorts and competitive pricing and then see if you can get a price match from simply maldives, Purely Maldives or similar.
If you dont fancy a seaplane some resorts are reached via domestic flights. Don't discount them if you want a reef. They're ususally under an hour and go to the outer Maldives resorts, often where the best reefs are.
Good luck!

A budget would be useful as prices can really vary. Do you want a house reef for snorkelling, or is that less important?
Meeru is a good family-friendly option at the lower end, around 45 minutes by speedboat. No house reef but they run free boat trips to a reef nearby, and they also have two-bedroom villas which work well for families.
Oblu Xperience Ailafushi is closer in transfer (about 15 minutes by speedboat) and very family focused with a large kids’ club and all-inclusive dining. Cinnamon Velifushi is another worth considering if you want something at a more affordable price point.
If budget is higher, Ozen Reserve Bolifushi is excellent and only a short transfer from Malé. RAAYA By Atmosphere is also worth considering if you’d like a mix of family activities, easy dining options, and the convenience of speedboat access rather than a seaplane.
For ideas and competitive pricing, you can check sites like Travel Republic or Destination2, then see if specialist agents like Simply Maldives or Purely Maldives can match. Here’s the official site for RAAYA By Atmosphere if you’d like to take a look: https://raaya-atmosphere.com/

It helps to think about a rough budget first, as resorts vary a lot in price. Also worth deciding if a proper snorkelling reef on the doorstep is a must, or if calm lagoon areas for the children are more important.
For very quick transfers, Kurumba (around 10 mins by boat) is an easy family choice – loads of dining options and good activities, though not the best reef. Bandos is another close-by option, friendly and practical for families with younger kids.
If you’re looking a step higher, Sheraton Full Moon has a solid kids programme and several restaurants, all within 20 minutes of the airport. Hard Rock and SAii Lagoon are also handy – linked to a marina complex with loads of food choices and busy kids clubs, so great if you don’t want anything too quiet.
Further out by speedboat, Meeru (about 45 mins) is very family-oriented with plenty of activities, though no house reef. OBLU Xperience Ailafushi or Paradise Island sit somewhere in between – straightforward all-inclusive, family facilities, and not far from Malé.
If you like the idea of a water villa with pool, check safety policies as many resorts prefer under-8s in beach villas. A split stay (beach plus overwater) can work really well for a first visit.
In the north male atoll resort category, one worth checking is VARU By Atmosphere – about 40 minutes by speedboat, good kids club, several restaurants, and both beach and overwater pool villas available.
