What pushchair did you have years ago

My dd is pregnant and wants to have a vintage pushchair. My 1st dd was born 35 yrs ago and I had a silvercross wayfarer in grey with a mint green stripe. You could have it forward or rear facing, had a huge shopping tray, folded flat, swivel front wheels and a wedge that made it suitable for newborns. I loved it!

What pushchair did you have from years ago?

My DD is 29 this year. I had a Mamas & Papas Roma buggy. Handle could be flipped so it was a pram (parent facing) or a buggy (forward facing). Navy blue with white polka dot. I loved it. It was so sturdy & I could get two bags of shopping in the basket/tray which was a godsend as I didn’t drive at the time.

Such a lovely idea!

Sonolanona · 20/05/2025 22:25

Silver Cross Wayfarer here also.(DD1 is 33) . Mine was a blue checked pattern. It was fantastic.. (they still come up for sale on ebay now and go for good prices!) So much sturdier than the ones you get now IMO. I now have a baby granddaughter and I'm keeping my eye out for one!

I also had a proper pram.. a coach pram, with a seat on top for the toddler. I loved that pram.

I also had a Silver Cross Wayfarer. My eldest DS is 31 now. I used it for all three DC then sold it on.

I had a Silver Cross Wayfarer to which was very sturdy, great for walking to local shops.
i also kept a small light buggy in the boot of the car as the Wayfarer was heavy to lift.

boilingstormyseas · 20/05/2025 22:34

I had a mamas and papas pram for my children 30 years ago. It transformed from a carry cot to a very comfortable, padded pushchair both forward and backward facing. The seat also reclined so was great if they fell asleep.

Mydustymonstera · 20/05/2025 22:34

Dd is only 12 but we sometimes used my husband’s toddler buggy, one of the classic McLaren umbrella folds from the 1970s with the deck chair style seat that came in either blue or red and white stripes. It was awesome!!! Only weighed about 2.5kg too
it would be so cool if she could get hold of one of them for the toddler stage.

RaininSummer · 20/05/2025 22:36

I had a McLaren in the late eighties and early nineties.

WillimNot · 20/05/2025 22:38

With DD (18) I had a Quinny Zapp. What a crap buggy that was. I then had a silver cross umbrella pushchair
When DS (17 soon) was born and I had two under two, I got a Phil and Teds three wheel double pushchair, with the removable extra seat so it could convert into a single buggy. That was far better than the Quinny, I could run up and down the hill to our house with it, it ended up with a lady nearby via Freecycle.

MyNewNewlife · 20/05/2025 22:40

Oooh I remember these pushchairs. The wayfarer was so popular and mamas and papas was the trendy new comer.

Love the thought of the original stripey umbrella fold

I had a Bebe Confort in a checked pattern. Had the biggest carrycot ever (that ds could still sleep in when we went out at night when he was 9 months old). The seat attachment swivelled both ways. It was pretty expensive but mil bought it for us.

asparagusffern · 20/05/2025 22:41

I had a Silver Cross Country Classic in navy. It was the absolute dream, the suspension was incredible, DS was born in 1998.

It has the bigger chassis so not great for putting in the car. We had a McClaren for that.

I remember taking my niece out in her bugaboo years later and it was awful, not a patch on the silver cross.

triballeader · 20/05/2025 22:41

I had a great big Emmaljunga BabyBus ( designed to take two with no chance of severely autistic son managing to get near his baby sister) and a huge marmot coach built pram that kept said son away from baby sister in the house)
TBH I used to envy those who could get away with fold ups.

Blackcountrychik83 · 20/05/2025 22:44

Type in Vintage pram into EBay :)

MyNewNewlife · 20/05/2025 22:46

Quinny zapps really were rubbish 😆

I had a silver cross wayfarer for number one child. I had the carrycot and pushchair and most of the accessories.

later I got a silver cross wayfarer double buggy for my younger children. Absolutely fantastic pram

MyNewNewlife · 20/05/2025 22:48

Dd Just confirmed.. she picked up a wayfarer from ebay.. it looks immaculate, wheels hardly touched.. ahh memories. I told her she'll love it.. or maybe I will more

Mine are 17 and 14. I had a Graco travel system with DS1, a McLaren XLR for holidays and then for DS2 a Loola Up travel system and for holidays a smaller McLaren Yellow Submarine Beatles edition

Mymanyellow · 20/05/2025 22:51

I had a big old silver cross. Bought for £25 in a second hand shop in Sydenham. Did my two eldest. I was going home one day and the wheel fell off. The dustman stopped and wrapped a bit of wire round it and it got me home.

TheFairyCaravan · 20/05/2025 22:52

We had a Mamas and Papas pram when DS1 was born 30yrs ago. It had a carrycot and a pushchair attachment that also went completely flat and could be front or rear facing. It was white with tiny navy flowers on. The hood used to come off so a sunshade would fit on, and we had the changing bag to match. It had a button to press and it would fold down one handed. When DS2 came along we used it with a buggy board.

MIL and FIL bought it for us.

Don't think I've seen a wayfarer double.. 🤔

I had a Chicco something or other travel system.

Then we had a Chicco umbrella fold buggy which 18 stone DH ruined by falling down the stairs and landing on top of it where it was standing in the hallway (tiny house).

Then we had a very nice McClaren lie-back buggy from when our 2nd child was about 4/5 months old.

LimeLime · 20/05/2025 23:02

I had a McLaren buggy in mint green and grey with a solid shopping tray 36 years ago, I used it to death and replaced it with the same model in dark grey pattern. It was the best I could afford at the time, and I rather coveted a Silver Cross wayfarer. But mine was light enough to be able to fold up and take on the bus, so that was an advantage.

Adrinaballerina · 20/05/2025 23:21

Oh I love this thread it's sent me down memory lane (and Google search...). I had the Mamas & Papas Pliko Pramette for DC1 age 19 in black and then Silver Cross Linear Freeway for DCs 2&3 in red which I adored. The pramette lasted through all 3 but I loved the Silver Cross the most. Had an assortment of lightweight buggies over the years too.

Evenstar · 20/05/2025 23:28

We had a Britax, with a carrycot, just found one on Marketplace, sold for £20. Happy memories ❤️ bought from John Lewis in 1990 just like ours.
