What pushchair did you have years ago

My dd is pregnant and wants to have a vintage pushchair. My 1st dd was born 35 yrs ago and I had a silvercross wayfarer in grey with a mint green stripe. You could have it forward or rear facing, had a huge shopping tray, folded flat, swivel front wheels and a wedge that made it suitable for newborns. I loved it!

What pushchair did you have from years ago?

DS2 I had a cheap Graco breeze. Only 2 positions and a bit rattly, but had a huge shopping basket Paid something like £70 from mother care He’s 27
DS3 I had a McLaren Techno from Birth He’s 23

I had a McLaren in the late eighties and early nineties.

McLaren buggy in red 1980s. Was bliss compared to the traditional silver cross pram which admittedly was wonderful for shopping and putting the toddler on a seat on top.

20 years ago I had a MUTSY....bright red, loved it

TizerorFizz · 21/05/2025 00:09

Ours was a Mamas and Papas carry cot, pram and pushchair system. Circa 1992. DD2 also had a Jacadi (French) telescopic type pushchair that folded up into a very compact umbrella shape. When she was 3 it was nicked - from outside a police station in the Cotswolds! Not sure they make them now. I have kept the Jacadi clothes DDs had though.

I am old, great grandma now.I had a Marmet pram with a fabric body bought for my DS1 in 1969 new at £28 it was the height fashion then.I had a McClaren umbrella fold buggy in blue and white stripe for the bus.The Marmet lasted for DS2 with a toddler seat ontop and was still in very good condition she I gave it away in 1975.I went through loads of Mc Claren buggies.
My first grandchild, born in 1992 was wheeled around in a McClaren pushchair with carrycot attachment,The second DGC in 1994 sat inside a double Wayfarer with her older sister. Third DGC had a Silver Cross pushchair 1996 which was more like a pram. The next two grandchildren had a Britax travel system pushchair 2001 and 2002.
My two great grandchildren had a Silvercross Wayfarer with carrycot, then when the second one came they both were in a Jools double pushchair.

DS is 25 and I was poor so we just had a Mothercare umbrella buggy which lay flat, so I used that from birth. It came with a cosytoes and was an orange/yellow check design. At that time I had no idea about buggies being fashionable and I just got the cheapest one. It lasted a good couple of years, then the frame got damaged and I bought a cheaper umbrella fold from Argos with a blue hammock-like seat, it didn't even recline. In many ways life was so much simpler in those days, I didn't have lots of reviews and videos to compare different models or read other people's opinions on what was trendy.

My DD is 29 this year. I had a Mamas & Papas Roma buggy. Handle could be flipped so it was a pram (parent facing) or a buggy (forward facing). Navy blue with white polka dot. I loved it. It was so sturdy & I could get two bags of shopping in the basket/tray which was a godsend as I didn’t drive at the time.

Dd is 30 this year and pretty sure we had the exact same one 😊

monktasmic · 21/05/2025 01:47

Dd had a mothercare travel system. Navy with white ducks on it.
i spent about a grand on the mutsy pram we had for dd2 - carry cot, lie flat car seat and seat I could face towards me to chat plus multiple sun shades and cosy toes / rain covers. Loved it - used it daily for 5 years or so. Was still in great nick when we passed it on.

CurlewKate · 21/05/2025 06:18

I had a Landrover 3 wheel all terrain 30 years ago. Partly because we did walk a lot. Also because I thought I was soooooo cool!

TizerorFizz · 21/05/2025 07:29

The big change in prams was the need for safe travel in cars. When I was young we just bounced around without restraints and babies were held, or had a carry cot on the back seat if there was room. My parents had a sprung “coach built” navy and chrome Silver Cross pram for me and Dsis. No travel system in sight. They sold it and then baby 3 was conceived! So the next pram was a much more versatile smaller one that converted to a carry cot. Still no seat belts in the car or baby car seats though. Thank goodness safety has come to the fore but in my childhood no-one dreamed of an all terrain buggy or a multi function pushchair! They didn’t exist where we lived.

Dd is only 12 but we sometimes used my husband’s toddler buggy, one of the classic McLaren umbrella folds from the 1970s with the deck chair style seat that came in either blue or red and white stripes. It was awesome!!! Only weighed about 2.5kg too
it would be so cool if she could get hold of one of them for the toddler stage.

My mum still has one in her garage - red and blue stripes!

It must be 40+ years old and has done various children and grandchildren. It now gets used for pushing dolls and teddies around the garden (by the grandchildren, not my mum!)

McLaren buggy in red 1980s. Was bliss compared to the traditional silver cross pram which admittedly was wonderful for shopping and putting the toddler on a seat on top.

Snap ! Had the blue and white striped version for DD (1975) and then DS (1977).
Also the big Silver Cross pram with the toddler seat on top . Happy memories !
The folding McLarens were revolutionary, though handles not great for hanging shopping bags on - learnt the hard way when DD nearly launched into space when buggy upended .

MyNewNewlife · 20/05/2025 22:54

Don't think I've seen a wayfarer double.. 🤔

They are apparently very rare. You could take the second seat off and use it as a single if you wanted

WorthySloth · 21/05/2025 07:52

This is similar to the one I had

I'd forgotten the launch 😁

There's one on eBay 1980 £500 vintage 😁

One of these McLaren super dreamers in 1992 for my eldest

KaySam · 21/05/2025 08:18

in 1992 had a mamas and papas blue pram with flowers on,also had a sun cover and footmuff matching.

Kathbrownlow · 21/05/2025 08:21

McLaren 45 years ago, then a McLaren double buggy when next child came along. Loved them.

Goatblu · 21/05/2025 08:27

Mamas & papas, navy and orange. It was a carry cot, push chair and car seat.

MadameCholetsDirtySecret · 21/05/2025 08:37

I had the silver cross wayfarer system in the navy blue tartan. It was a classic design.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 21/05/2025 08:44

Just a simple, very easily folded McLaren. And it was fine. Most people had the same. The fancy ones you practically have to take out a mortgage for barely existed.

Bluevelvetsofa · 21/05/2025 08:51

I had a coach built Marmet pram in the early 80s. That did for number 2 with a seat for the toddler. Then a double McClaren pushchair.
