Contact lenses question - dry eye?

Hi all

I posted the other day asking about a scratchy feeling in my eyes with the contact lenses and wasn't sure whether that was all part of the adjusting process.

Fast forward to now, I purchased Precision 1 lenses after going back to Specsavers who tried me with Sphericals instead of Torics and I felt much better. Couldn't feel the edges anymore.

However I now have a cold feeling in my left eye, almost like a minty feeling.

During my appt at Specsavers they couldn't see that my eye was dry, but what else could this be? Is my eye adjusting still? Should I continue using them or is this a early sign of dry eye? Specsavers confirmed fit is perfect and couldn't see why i'm feeling this sensation.

I am using Systane drops as the cold feeling is there without the lenses too, I haven't worn lenses for the last 2 days

Anyone else experienced this?

I've worn daily contacts for years and had dry eyes and I've never had that sensation. Have you tried different eye drops?

Qwerty8474 · 20/05/2025 17:18

@Sosigsandwich I used Blink eyedrops initially, but then changed to Systane Hydration. Maybe I have caused some irritation from the trials (putting them in/taking them out)

Don’t continue with your lenses until your eyes have been checked again. It could be nothing, it could be sensitivity, it could be infection, it could be dirt, it could be cold saline, it could be an irritated eye. The list is endless but it’s not worth taking a chance with your eyes so get checked out to make sure your eyes are okay. And depending on that, revisit the lenses you’re using and if they actually are suitable.

(I’ve been wearing contacts for 30+ years).

Personally I’d suggest you go to a good independent optometrist as I find the quality of care is much higher with an independent than with the big chains like David Clulow and Specsavers etc. You tend to get what you pay for (as you found out when you tried to cut costs on lenses) and an independent is entirely reliant on their reputation whereas the big brands get footfall regardless of how good (or bad) they are.

I use the blue hydrosan ones, I use them in the morning before putting my contacts in and again at night after removing them. With contacts you should be aware that they're in, in my experience.

I agree with @HundredMilesAnHour that it's not worth taking a risk with your eyes.

Thank you both! I will make an appt with an independent opticians as you're right, I would rather get my eye checked properly than risk it. It could be anything. I really appreciate the advice!

Please let us know how you get on @Qwerty8474

I’m sure everything will be ok but better safe than sorry when it’s your eyes.

If you live in London, I can recommend you a fabulous independent optician near Spitalfields that I’ve been seeing for years now and trust him with my life pretty much. I

Cold minty feeling in my experience is a drop of toothpaste that splashed in whilst brushing my teeth or putting my lenses in directly after brushing my teeth!

I have a reaction to one type of cleaning solution (the one the optician gave me) I switched brand and it's been fine since.

Qwerty8474 · 21/05/2025 13:46

@HundredMilesAnHour thank you! I live in Hertfordshire. Luckily there is one in town very close by to me so I am going to phone them up today and get booked in

@TeenagersDontWearCoats yes this is exactly how it feels but I do feel as though my left eye is my problem eye with some type of underlying issue, either dryness or something else as it's gritty one day, cold the next day, then gritty again.

Looking forward to getting seen properly to see what the problem is!

What lenses do you all use?

I use dailies. For my right eye I use Acuvue Oasys and for my left I use Clariti Multifocal.

Why do you use two different ones?

Why do you use two different ones?

My eyes have different issues and these give me the best vision when used together.
