Ukraine denies suspending exhumation work in Ternopil region, — Tochytskyi
Ukrainian Minister of Culture Mykola Tochytskyi denied reports circulating on social media and among Polish audiences about the alleged suspension of search and exhumation work in the village of Sadovoe (formerly Puzhnyky) in Ternopil region.
He said claims about a ministry letter bearing his signature were false and aimed at undermining the constructive historical dialogue between Ukraine and Poland.
“I emphasize once again that the field work in Puzhnyky was successfully completed on May 10, 2025. The Polish side called this process a historical and diplomatic breakthrough,” Tochytskyi said.
“We remain committed to democratic and Christian values and will continue to honor the memory of both Ukrainians and Poles with dignity,” he added, calling for a prompt response from the Polish Ministry of Culture and Minister Anna Wroblewska.

A Ukrainian drone attack on June 1 damaged about 10% of Russia’s strategic bomber fleet, including aircraft preparing to strike Ukraine, a senior German military official said.
“According to our assessment, more than a dozen aircraft were damaged — Tu-95 and Tu-22 strategic bombers as well as A-50 reconnaissance aircraft,” said Major General Christian Freuding, who coordinates Berlin’s military aid to Kyiv.
He said the A-50 planes, used for aerial reconnaissance and similar in role to NATO’s AWACS, were likely not operational at the time of the strike.
“We believe they can no longer be used for spare parts. This is a loss, as there are only a few of these aircraft left,” he added.

New video shows SBU “Pavutyna” operation: FPV drone strikes aircraft at Belaya airfield
Footage released by Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) captures an FPV drone’s flight from takeoff on a modular building roof to striking an aircraft at Belaya airfield. The drone flies unobstructed into the base, where smoke rises from previously hit planes.
The SBU carried out coordinated strikes on four Russian military airfields: Olenya, Ivanovo, Diagilevo, and Belaya. These bases host Russian strategic aviation responsible for bombing Ukrainian cities. The operation was led by SBU Chief Vasyl Malyuk on behalf of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The SBU reported that the “Pavutyna” (“Web”) operation destroyed $7 billion worth of enemy equipment and 41 aircraft, including A-50, Tu-95, Tu-22, Tu-160, An-12, and Il-78 models. https://t.me/United24media/32300

🇨🇳 Russia considers China an adversary with territorial ambitions in the Far East, according to a secret FSB document obtained by The New York Times.
Officially, Moscow presents Beijing as one of its most reliable partners, but behind the scenes, the countries’ intelligence services are reportedly engaged in a tense struggle. While the document’s authenticity has not been independently confirmed, Western intelligence agencies believe it to be genuine.
China has taken advantage of Russia’s focus on Ukraine, with much of its military and intelligence resources redirected to the war. As a result, Beijing has allegedly intensified efforts to recruit Russian spies.
The document also claims that China is searching for traces of “ancient Chinese peoples” in Russia’s Far East, potentially to sway the local population. Some Chinese scholars reportedly support the idea of presenting territorial claims to Russia.
Nevertheless, the FSB document emphasizes that any actions must be extremely cautious — under no circumstances should Russia publicly acknowledge that it sees China as a threat.

These images show Russian forces using the carcass of a hare as an improvised explosive device — stuffing it with explosives and attaching it to a drone for deployment over targeted areas.
According to analysts from the Militarnyi portal, such “armed” animal remains can be used for both mine-laying and precision strikes on enemy positions.
The use of animal carcasses as explosive devices makes detection significantly more difficult, posing an increased threat to personnel and potentially leading to casualties.
The analysts note that similar instances of booby-trapping objects and animal remains have been documented since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
In addition to using animal carcasses for explosives, Russian forces have also employed animals for logistics and transporting military equipment, the report adds.

A car belonging to a prosecutor was blown up in Dnipro — two suspected Russian agents are under investigation.
According to investigators, the men were recruited via Telegram. Their initial task was to surveil the prosecutor and report on his schedule and movements. Later, they were instructed by Russian handlers to plant an improvised explosive device under the official’s car and detonate it.
The explosion occurred on June 6. The vehicle was destroyed, but the prosecutor sustained only minor injuries. The suspects were detained just hours after the blast and are now facing terrorism charges.

Yes to this film. Was on iPlayer a while ago and I flagged it up, so joining you to flag it up again.

It's basically about the Holodomor, the famine that Russia created in Ukraine in the 1930s, so it speaks to the history between oppressor Russia and oppressed Ukraine. It's quite harrowing but such a brilliant film. It's directed by a Polish woman, Agnieszka Holland. I urge anyone who hasn't seen it to try to catch it.

On top of everything else that it's got going for it, the star is James Norton. 😍

Yes, I too watched on the Beeb. I watched without knowing it was a true story, apart from Holodomor of course. So I was shocked by the caption at the end.

Even if a reasonable leader governed Russia, it would take many generations to undo the cruel mindset they describe as strength.

It's being said that Trump has sent 20,000 missiles promised to Ukraine by Biden to the Middle East instead.

Isn't this the already reported or continuing story (and exact details vary) regarding the Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System- either redirection of whole missiles or just proximity fuses for use by US Forces in the region.

I know it's tough call but there have been reports (not widely distributed beyond specialist media) that US Forces have occasionally been having a very torrid time with drone attacks.

From a US politics POV I can see the reason for the redirect but it sucks from a Ukraine POV.

PiggyPigalle · 08/06/2025 21:20

Confused at the moment. All seems to have gone quiet in Europe again, Unless it's Merz insisting on it.
Colonel Hamish de Bretton- Gordon when interviewed yesterday said Ukraine can turn it around. Leave the US out of it, Europe can cope. When that lands in an interviewer's lap, wouldn't it be expected for him to then ask, how? He just left it and the interview finished.

The Independent said: "But a peace built on surrender to an imperialist dictator would be no peace at all.
The Ukrainian people must continue to fight, and all the nations of the world that believe in freedom, democracy and national self-determination must continue to help to defend them."

This is an amateur question, but due to opinion saying fight on, even with only Europe's help.

Since Ukraine has become so proficient with drones, UK is making them too, is it possible that with longer range drones, missiles will be used less so costs fall. Therefore we'd have the means to help

I felt bouyed up at the thought, until the news of Russia reaching Donetsk.
Also US saying Putin hasn't retaliated yet for Spider Web. It's coming possibly in the next few days.
In 2022, when Ukraine was doing so well, I used to open the Sky news site looking through my fingers. If Zelensky wasn't at the top, I'd know he hadn't been assassinated. Now I'm doing the same in case Russia has nuked them.

It was already reported, and I commented about it up thread. And it was prox fuzes, not missiles. The fuzes were likely intended for the Ukrainians to use in their locally produced anti-drone munitions. Here's the story:

U.S. Is Redirecting Critical Antidrone Technology From Ukraine to U.S. Forces

I haven't seen the number 20k reported anywhere, and it sounds extremely high to me. Two thousand of these would be a lot.

Here's a brief excerpt:

The decision to redirect the component illustrates the scarcity of crucial defense items as Ukraine steels itself for more Russian drone and missile attacks, while U.S. Air Force units in the Middle East prepare for a possible conflict with Iran or renewed fighting with Houthi militants in Yemen.

Supporters of the move say the Pentagon has the flexibility to take such an action under the emergency military-spending bill passed last year. But the move had prompted concerns among Ukraine's supporters in Congress, who say that the Pentagon hasn't explained what effect the move would have on Ukrainian defenses or whether the Air Force need is urgent.

"This capability is urgent and vital to Ukraine's layered air defense against Russian attacks," said Celeste Wallander, who served as a senior Defense Department official during the Biden administration. "But there is also an urgent requirement to protect U.S. personnel and bases in the Middle East against Houthi and potentially Iranian drone attacks."

The fuzes are intended for the Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System. The U.S. has provided that technology to Ukraine for a couple of years, and the Ukrainians have used it in a ground-to-air rocket system for defending against Russian drones. The Pentagon has touted its effectiveness. A critical component is the "proximity fuze," which detonates explosives when the rocket nears a drone.

The Air Force has adapted the rockets so that they can be fired by F-16s and F-15E jet fighters against drones. The system is cheaper than Sidewinder and AMRAAM air-to-air missiles. A photo of an F-15E equipped with the rocket pods was recently posted by the U.S. Central Command.

Key Takeaways:

  • Kremlin officials and the Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) announced on June 8 that Russian forces reached the Donetsk-Dnipropetrovsk Oblast border and are conducting offensive operations into Dnipropetrovsk Oblast — an oblast that Russia has not illegally declared as annexed.
  • Russian officials have repeatedly signaled that the Kremlin has wider territorial ambitions in Ukraine, including in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast.
  • Russia continued to baselessly accuse Ukraine of failing to repatriate the bodies of killed in action (KIA) soldiers on June 8 — part of the Kremlin's efforts to undermine mutually agreed upon confidence-building measures with Ukraine.
  • The Kremlin appears to have orchestrated a concerted media campaign that aimed to use the purportedly agreed-upon KIA exchange in order to discredit Ukraine and promote Russia's justifications for its war to both domestic and international audiences.
  • Russian officials appear to be setting conditions to withdraw from international arms control treaties, likely as part of preparation for a potential future war with NATO.
  • Ukrainian forces reportedly struck a chemical plant in Tula Oblast on June 8.
  • Ukrainian and Russian forces recently advanced near Toretsk, and Russian forces recently advanced in the Povrovsk direction.

EU considers adding Russia to money laundering “grey list” – FT
The European Union is weighing whether to add Russia to its “grey list” of jurisdictions with weak money laundering controls, the Financial Times reported. A majority of European Parliament members support the move as part of efforts to tighten financial pressure on Moscow.
“There is overwhelming support for Russia to be included on the list,” said Markus Ferber, a German MEP with the European People’s Party.
The list, which requires majority approval from MEPs, was expected to be published this week. However, its adoption was postponed for “administrative/procedural reasons,” according to a commission spokesperson, who said it would be adopted early next week.
Placement on the list would require financial institutions to carry out enhanced checks on transactions involving Russian entities or individuals, increasing compliance costs and reputational risk.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte warned that Russia may pose a direct threat to the Alliance within five years.
“Russia has joined forces with China, North Korea and Iran. They are expanding their military forces and capabilities. Putin’s military machine is accelerating, not slowing down,” Rutte said.
He noted that Russia is rebuilding its forces with Chinese technology and ramping up weapons production.
“Just talking about ammunition, Russia produces as much in three months as all NATO countries produce in a year,” he added.

Zelenskyy: Fiercest battles in Pokrovsk, Kursk direction, and Sumy border
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the most intense fighting is taking place in the Pokrovsk direction, the area of the Kursk operation, and along the border of the Sumy region.
“Everywhere, Russian tactics are the same: they do not count losses and try to advance, storm Ukrainian positions, and gain at least a meter,” he said.

Drone strike sparks fire at Russian military electronics plant in Cheboksary

Russia may test NATO’s resolve — German intelligence chief
There are people in Moscow who do not believe NATO’s Article 5 works and would like to test the Alliance’s strength, said Bruno Kahl, head of Germany’s Federal Intelligence Service (BND), in an interview with N-TV.
He warned against underestimating Russia’s expansionist ambitions, stating that intelligence indicates the war in Ukraine is only “the first step on the path to the West.”
“Russia wants to kick America out of Europe and will use any means to do so,” Kahl said. “It doesn’t need to launch a full-scale bombing campaign or deploy armored forces. It’s enough to send ‘little green men’ to Estonia to protect so-called oppressed Russian minorities.”
He said Moscow believes this would force the U.S. president to decide whether to send troops across the Atlantic and risk American casualties — a test for the Alliance.
“We must be aware of this and act as a strong deterrent so that Putin doesn’t even think about an attack,” he added.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte also warned that Russia could attempt to use force against the Alliance within five years and urged members “not to deceive themselves,” saying the entire Alliance now represents NATO’s “eastern border.”

Kyiv Post Telegram Highlights

Israel has transferred Patriot systems to Ukraine — systems it previously received from the United States, Israel’s ambassador to Kyiv, Brodsky, confirmed.

Russia has carried out its largest transfer of military equipment (www.kyivpost.com/post/54236) toward the Sumy front, including self-propelled guns, air defense weapons, and over 40 trucks, loaded with ammo and personnel. A convoy was filmed moving via Mariupol toward Taganrog, then rail to Kursk.

Russia has significantly upgraded North Korea’s KN-23 ballistic missiles, turning them into deadly short-range weapons — Ukraine’s intelligence chief Budanov
He also warns Russia is now helping North Korea produce kamikaze drones.

Ukraine will transfer about $171 million payment (www.kyivpost.com/post/54233) to the International Monetary Fund (MIF) on June 9. This is the first Ukraineʼs repayment on loans received after Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.

“I don’t believe we should mobilize 18-year-olds, as some foreign leaders suggest. Operation ‘Spiderweb’ proved that it’s not about numbers — it’s about weapons, technology, money, and pressure. Sanctions should target the funds Russia uses to fuel its war. But when Western partners list reasons for holding back on sanctions, one of them is that Ukraine hasn’t mobilized people aged 18 and older,”
Ukraine’s President Zelensky said.
He added that Ukraine currently mobilizes about 27,000 people per month — while Russia mobilizes between 40,000 and 50,000.

Kyiv was able to eavesdrop on residents of Russia’s Bryansk and Belgorod regions, (www.kyivpost.com/post/54227) as they described widespread destruction, a collapse of basic services, and an overall sense of abandonment – a result of Putin’s continuing war on Ukraine.

A maternity hospital in Odesa was destroyed after another brutal overnight Russian strike. (www.kyivpost.com/post/54243)
Putin’s forces targeted civilian infrastructure across the city throughout the night. There are victims. Rescue efforts are still ongoing.

“Russians only understand the language of force,” (www.kyivpost.com/post/54247) said Hungarian Prime Minister Orbán — long seen by the West as one of Moscow’s closest allies.

🇮🇱 Israel has transferred Patriot systems to Ukraine, Israeli Ambassador to Ukraine Michael Brodsky has confirmed.
However, he did not specify how many Patriot systems were delivered or when exactly the transfer took place.
▪️Back in June 2024, the Financial Times reported that the U.S., Israel, and Ukraine were in talks over the potential supply of up to eight Patriot air defense systems to Kyiv. At that time, the deal had not yet been finalized.

🤡"The Russians are demanding that Putin strike Kyiv with the "Oreshnik" system. They want harsher actions — they’re tired of negotiations." - said the head of the Russian delegation, Vladimir Medinsky.

Russia launched a massive overnight attack on Kyiv and Odesa.
In Kyiv, Russian forces targeted the capital with strike drones, causing damage across seven city districts. Both apartment buildings and private homes were affected. Fires broke out in various locations, including vehicles and warehouse facilities.

Air defense forces neutralized 284 aerial targets overnight, with Kyiv being the main direction of the attack.
Ukrainian forces shot down 213 Shahed drones (another 64 were lost from radar), 2 KN-23 ballistic missiles, and 5 Iskander-K cruise missiles. In total, Russia launched 322 aerial targets.
There were confirmed strikes in 11 locations, and debris fell in 16 locations.
