I Used To Drink 20 Cans Of Fizzy Drinks A Day And Now I Have Heart Disease

I used to drink 20 cans of fizzy drinks a day, mostly coke and irn bru.

A month ago, I was diagnosed with heart disease and I got told I needed to stop drinking fizzy drinks completely or I would be at risk of a heart attack.

I am allowed to drink all other drinks that are not fizzy. I don't like milk, and water is boring and so is fruit juice. It's not only boring, I'm also sad that I'm not allowed to drink fizzy drinks anymore, not even occasionally. I feel sad pretty much all the time.

It is making me never want to go to parties or go out for dinner. Me, my dh, and my two dc used to watch films on Friday night and Saturday night, and even watching films is boring when I can't drink fizzy drinks.

Is anyone in a similar situation? Or does anyone know anything I can do to get over it?

This is almost as bizarre as the OP!

In what way? Suggesting hypnotherapy?
No, I’ve never had Coke, Pepsi, Fanta, Irn Bru, or any fizzy drink. We would never drink those while eating out and we never buy them for home. My DH might have one Coke a year maybe. Very rare.

It’s definitely no bad thing but it is very unusual in that not only you haven’t ever had a soft drink but your adult children haven’t.

I don’t drink fizzy drink regularly, and go years without one but of course like everyone else I know have had it.

I think it’s just a common part of culture so people expect you to have tasted it at least once.

If this is real, how is anyone that thirsty to drink so much liquid?

I drink grown up drinks - tea and coffee and very rarely drink pop.

I did have a coke with my tea last night as I had been driving all day and felt a little dehydrated. Usually the only fizzy stuff I drink is tonic with my gin 😊

Tea and coffee are no good for you either and have much higher amounts of caffeine than cola has.

I don't drink tea and coffee so no axe to grind, but it's the sugar that's the issue - one can of coke has 9 teaspoons. 20 cans is 180 tsp of sugar a day. Not comparable really.

I don't mean drinking cola in excess but say just one or two per week is much healthier than drinking 3/4 cups of tea or coffee per day which most people do. That's definitely not healthy. The amount of caffeine is insane and is the reason for headaches when people don't have their fill. It's highly addictive also. The people on their high horse about fizzy drinks probably drink copious amounts of tea and coffee.

Yeah, everything in moderation and all that. I think most people are okay on their teas n coffees, baffling though it is to me. Anyone I know who's started to have issues with the caffeine has cut down or switched to decaf.

It's boggling to me too. I can't understand why people want to drink hot drinks in this weather but hey each to their own 🤣 I have a grievance with tea especially. Growing up I found that my whole family's lives revolved around cups of tea , as soon as they got in the door the kettle was on, having tea with dinner and anything sweet. Drives me mad to this fay!! I'm not a massive fizzy drinker either but they don't annoy me as much as hot drinks do 😅

Circular00Route · 19/05/2025 11:48

How do you afford to drink 20 cans of fizzy pop per day ?

Circular00Route · 19/05/2025 11:50

How do you have time to drink 20 cans of pop per day ?
Do you work outside the home ?

TheBewleySisters · 19/05/2025 11:53

I don't think I have ever seen the words "fizzy drinks" written down so many times in my life as there are in this thread!

JohnMajorsChicken · 19/05/2025 12:08

The title of this thread throws me off.
I feel like it should be the cover story for Take A Break or similar!

It isn't hot where I am.

And decaffeinated tea and coffee is widely available and tastes just as good as the caffeinated version.

I never fancy a cold drink when I am cold and would just get dehydrated in winter if I didn't drink tea.

I'm fascinated by the logistics of buying such a huge amount.

Do you go out and buy it yourself or do you get it delivered? How often? Did you look for special offers or just buy it as and when?

With your DC drinking it as well you must have gone through at least a 24 pack each day. If you go it delivered I bet your delivery person lived you.

Ponderingwindow · 19/05/2025 14:41

I’ve noticed a few people have recommended the flavored drops. I know they are incredibly popular. I just wanted to point out to OP that while most of them don’t have aspartame, they do contain large amounts of other artificial sweeteners. As someone who has just been advised to avoid one, I would be hesitant to develop a habit heavy on another.

I'm fascinated by the logistics as well. if the whole family drinks the same that is a huge number of cans. 4 cans at work and 16 at home! I would have permanent stomach ache. Why cans and not bottles if you drink most of it at home?

gruberandassocs · 19/05/2025 15:06

OP are you sure that you meant 20 per day not per week? Because if you are only drinking 4 at work - what 7/8 hrs how can you fit in the other 16?

Illegally18 · 19/05/2025 16:25

PyongyangKipperbang · 19/05/2025 01:28

There is a huge difference between natural sugars that are in unadulterated fruit juices and the sugar in fizzy drinks.

A glass of coke contains all kinds of crap, a glass of orange juice has less sugar (although not much less), but it is natural sugar. OJ also contains Vitamin C and no artificial colourings, flavouring or preservatives (if its fresh juice).

Thats why my kids, when they were young, never drank fizzy pop except at parties etc.

That said, I am not a fan of the smug "ooh water, yummy" style of that post.

I have to agree. 'Ooh, yummy, water!' FGS! Having said that, I am happy that I wasn;t brough up in a family that had fizzy drinks, or cakes out all the time. When I watch Gogglebox on TV, there is a family that watch TV with a set of cream cakes in front of them. I find that extraordinary. Other people's eating style and upbringing is fascinating. Which makes me think of a book I read several years ago called something like 'What they Ate', about several famous women and how/what they ate, like Helen Gureley Brown, Eva Braun, or Wordsworth's sister.

OrangeQualityStreetAreTheBest · 19/05/2025 20:04

I know someone that has a diet coke addiction, although nowhere near this scale.

OP says 20 cans a day, but this could just be to give us an indication of volume, and it's not necessarily cola cola branded.

Aldi cola is 49p for 2L. I assume lidl in similar too. My relative drinks this as there's no way they could afford the amount they drink in coca cola branded cans.

I can’t see how 3-4 teas a day could be less healthy than even only 2 cans a week. The two cans are 40 spoons of sugar plus artificial chemicals, the tea if you drink it black is … some leaves that haven’t been shown to harm anything or have any maximum quantity recommendation? If you drink it white with sugar it’s 14 spoons of sugar and up to 200ml milk, plus tea.

Tea has antioxidant properties. Decaffeinated tea is far better for you than sugary drinks.

What is it with adults who can't drink anything that isn't sweet or fizzy?

GreenFressia · 19/05/2025 23:01

It takes a while to get over giving up sugar but In about three months you won't miss it at all.

In the meantime - things that mimic the taste of sugar - cinammon - so cinammon baked fruit, low sugar fruits like Raspberries and Strawberries. Red coloured fruit herbal teas.
