I Used To Drink 20 Cans Of Fizzy Drinks A Day And Now I Have Heart Disease

I used to drink 20 cans of fizzy drinks a day, mostly coke and irn bru.

A month ago, I was diagnosed with heart disease and I got told I needed to stop drinking fizzy drinks completely or I would be at risk of a heart attack.

I am allowed to drink all other drinks that are not fizzy. I don't like milk, and water is boring and so is fruit juice. It's not only boring, I'm also sad that I'm not allowed to drink fizzy drinks anymore, not even occasionally. I feel sad pretty much all the time.

It is making me never want to go to parties or go out for dinner. Me, my dh, and my two dc used to watch films on Friday night and Saturday night, and even watching films is boring when I can't drink fizzy drinks.

Is anyone in a similar situation? Or does anyone know anything I can do to get over it?

How did you have time to get anything done with all that drinking? I’d have been constantly going for a wee!

Is there any reason you can’t have fizzy water? Add ice and a slice.

yes, and they make you burp!

RedRoss86 · 18/05/2025 22:53

So would you have a can or two every hour on the hour?!

Saz12 · 18/05/2025 22:53

Ultimately, you can choose to learn self restraint. Or you can die prematurely.

Some people find self restraint easy. Some people find making others laugh easy. Some people sporty. Some are pretty. Some are talented. Ultimately, you can do your best if you choose to.

The full sugar drinks don't usually have aspartame, though?

Almost all of them have aspartame or other sweeteners, thanks to the sugar tax.

OP, I think you’ve got confused about what medics have said to you. Perhaps you could take someone with you to your next appointment?

Even if that was the case (which it isn’t according to PP), pretty sure 20 cans of full sugar drinks a day will still make her issues worse. The whole approach needs fixing not tinkering around the edges.

I don’t know how serious this post is but generally speaking Has society failed collectively if some grown adults don’t know consuming huge quantities of coke or whatever is extremely unhealthy?

It’s really not helping the NHS when people are so reckless with their health.

I had a friend who was 5 stone overweight, smoking and paediatric. She was given a warning and spent 6 months working on her mental and physical health. Lost over 5 stone, cut down on cigarettes and now walks daily. Had another pal who quit smoking altogether and lost a similar amount of weight.

Some people take warnings seriously , others don’t.

Do you work, OP? Because it seems to me only someone who is idle would keep popping cans open like this.

outingouting · 18/05/2025 22:58

I’ve read about how your brain develops neural pathways around habits. So you might feel bored or something, and your brain is a bit lazy and just suggests something it’s always done that pleases you (fizzy drinks). Which is the craving.

And it takes a bit of time and practice to develop new pathways.

what I mean is in a year’s time you probably won’t want fizzy drinks like you do now. Your brain just needs to get used to doing different things.

good luck x

I also have a cousin who is not allowed to drink any fizzy drinks, and she hasn't been allowed them for 14 years, I'm not sure what the reason is for her. I always see her drinking fresh orange juice at parties. About 7 years ago, she posted on facebook about her being depressed, but I know that wasn't because of her not being allowed to drink fizzy drinks because she mentioned in her post that she used to always be happy.

My grandfather is not allowed to drink fizzy drinks. People sometimes give him cans of fizzy drinks, but my grandmother doesn't let him have them. She says to him "you're not supposed to be drinking fizzy drinks" and then she either drinks them or gives them to someone else. I know he has blocked arteries all over his body, so that could be the reason for him.

My sister doesn't drink fizzy drinks, only because she doesn't like them. The only fizzy drink she likes is 7up but she rarely even drinks that. She usually drinks water, even at parties.

Fizzy drinks has lost all meaning.

OP an abdominal aortic aneurysm isn't a disease of the heart itself, it's a vascular (blood vessel) problem. I happen to know because my mother had one. There's a defect in your aorta, the large blood vessel bringing blood downwards from your heart towards your legs.

The danger is that the aneurysm, a sac of blood where the wall of the aorta has got stretched thin, can rupture. In which case you'd die fairly promptly, bleed to death despite absence of external injury.

In my mother's case, it was treated with a stent, basically a patch substituting for the stretched part of the aorta. A small operation via incisions in her loins. But that wasn't in the UK. I hope the NHS has similar options. And yes, skip the fizzy drinks.

Completely agree but if she isn’t working how was paying for 20 cans of fizzy drink a day as well as cigarettes

My dc do also drink fizzy drinks. They also drink fizzy drinks with their lunch and their dinner and they have at least 1 can when we watch a film and they have 3 or 4 cans at a party, and they usually have 2 cans when we go out for dinner. My dd is 16 and my ds is 15 so I can't really control them now. They love fizzy drinks as much as I did, so I don't know if my condition would make them stop having or wanting it.

Oh. 😞

CordeliaChaste · 18/05/2025 23:18

I’m wondering if you could try cocaine instead. It will give you a buzz and doesn’t usually contain aspartame

loropianalover · 18/05/2025 23:19

All this thread has done is make me want a fizzy drink 🤔. Coca Cola marketing ploy!

Princessconsuelabananahammock9 · 18/05/2025 23:19

2,800 calories in coke each day and 7 teeth lost?

Are you also morbidly obese OP? Has the doctor suggested other changes too?

JustSawJohnny · 18/05/2025 23:19

NellieGirl · 18/05/2025 20:55

My doctor told me it's the apartame in fizzy drinks that causes heart disease.

But you said you were drinking full sugar fizzy drinks?

Aspartame is in sugar free drinks.

Anyway, how about Kombucha?

Whattodo1610 · 18/05/2025 23:22

I reported the thread at page 2 - there’s no way it’s real - we’re all feeding her addiction, and not the fizzy drink kind 🤷‍♀️

EdgarAllenRaven · 18/05/2025 23:23

This post has made me so grateful for my Mum who NEVER let me have fizzy drinks!
They were banned in our house!

My kids also now love water - they literally say “Water, yummy!” Because they don’t know any different.

Anyways, my 10 year old is now allowed an occasional one, in case you all think I’m mad, but overall I’m glad they love their water, milk and juices.
You don’t need to buy them, folks.

What word should paediatric be @Duchessofcakes?

hulahooper2 · 18/05/2025 23:26

honestly think of your family , if giving up fizzy drinks keeps you alive for them then it’s a small price to pay , suck it up & find another drink

Lourdes12 · 18/05/2025 23:30

orange Juice with fizzy water

I’m so glad I was strict. It wasn’t even strict, we just never gave our kids anything other than water or milk. No juice, squash or fizzy drinks.

People used to love to tell me that once they got to secondary school they’d go nuts for them, but they never did. They’re now early 20s and still drink water as their ‘soft’ drink. I, on the other hand, have a complete addiction to Pepsi Max, which they can’t even fathom.
