I Used To Drink 20 Cans Of Fizzy Drinks A Day And Now I Have Heart Disease

I used to drink 20 cans of fizzy drinks a day, mostly coke and irn bru.

A month ago, I was diagnosed with heart disease and I got told I needed to stop drinking fizzy drinks completely or I would be at risk of a heart attack.

I am allowed to drink all other drinks that are not fizzy. I don't like milk, and water is boring and so is fruit juice. It's not only boring, I'm also sad that I'm not allowed to drink fizzy drinks anymore, not even occasionally. I feel sad pretty much all the time.

It is making me never want to go to parties or go out for dinner. Me, my dh, and my two dc used to watch films on Friday night and Saturday night, and even watching films is boring when I can't drink fizzy drinks.

Is anyone in a similar situation? Or does anyone know anything I can do to get over it?

There is a huge difference between natural sugars that are in unadulterated fruit juices and the sugar in fizzy drinks.

A glass of coke contains all kinds of crap, a glass of orange juice has less sugar (although not much less), but it is natural sugar. OJ also contains Vitamin C and no artificial colourings, flavouring or preservatives (if its fresh juice).

Thats why my kids, when they were young, never drank fizzy pop except at parties etc.

That said, I am not a fan of the smug "ooh water, yummy" style of that post.

actually when it comes to sugar in orange juice and sugar in a UK can of coke (cane sugar) there isn't that much difference realistically in how the body processes the stuff. It's an instant sugar hit (one of the reasons diabetics carry orange juice with them in case they need an instant sugar delivery). High Fructose Corn syrup (which is in Coke in the US, and is in some cans of fizzy stuff in the UK is a very very different story.

There are high rates of type 2 diabetes in middle eastern countries...why?? Because they drink a lot of fruit juice.

The point here is to cut down on all that junk sugar, calories and caffeine that's been guzzled. And swapping to fruit juice instead will not do it. Just drink water - if you need a flavor of some sort then add some slices of lime/cucumber to it. Or have some herbal tea.

Fascinating that people think vascular disease is more likely due to soft drink than to.......smoking.

Fascinating.

As soon as I read AAA I assumed you smoked. That's how likely it is to have been the actual cause. It's great that you've stopped that, it was quite literally going to kill you.

I do know the differences. I have hypo's regularly (not diabetic) and OJ is far better as it is easier and quicker to ingest.

You kind of made the point against yourself though. Drinking fruit juice isnt without its bad points but its better than fizzy crap with additives, caffeine etc

What is your evidence that the spike in T2 in the ME is down to high fruit juice diets?

Over 6 litres of fizzy each day? What on earth does your dentist say? Do you have any teeth left?

Edited

Not to mention the calories consumed with TWENTY a day!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 19/05/2025 02:54

Twenty. Cans. Of Pop. That is unbelievable. 😳

It will take a long time to shift your taste.
Good for you for stopping.

BlaBlaBla87436780087 · 19/05/2025 03:20

This literally looks like it was typed by a stroppy toddler. You have HEART DISEASE grow up and drink water ffs and stop whinging

Boreded · 19/05/2025 03:22

What benefit are you getting from lying about your liquid consumption. Drinking 20 cans a day is 6.6l - your kidneys couldn’t handle it, you wouldn’t have time to get heart disease because you would already have destroyed your kidneys.

Yeah I'm not actually convinced this is real to be fair, it's too odd!

It isn’t….!

It isn’t….!

I was thinking the same can’t imagine been able to drink even 10 cans a day let alone 20 without been completely bloated.

Mymanyellow · 19/05/2025 06:11

Spends half the day drinking cans of fizzy pop. The other half on the toilet.

LillyPJ · 19/05/2025 06:18

But there's also sleep, work, showering, eating - not to mention 20 trips to the bathroom for a pee...!

ArtemisiaTheArtist · 19/05/2025 06:32

I used to drink a lot of coke and pepsi. Then I got diagnosed with (pregnancy triggered) Atrial Fibrillation and was told to pack it in. I still have the odd caffeinated soft drink but only one. I now drink water with chunks of citrus fruits in it.

Deathraystare · 19/05/2025 06:36

Rreading with interest as trying to wean myself off fizzy drinks (no 20 cans a day though!!). I do like fizzy water and prefer it to still. I cannot drink much still water as it makes me sick.

NellieGirl · 18/05/2025 20:53

Yeah I got told it increases your risk of AF and strokes as well as heart attack. One of my mum's friends died of a stroke but I'm not sure what causes her to have a stroke, but I think you can take a stroke without any known cause.

Your previous post said you had the full sugar drinks and that was the cause.

Which was it? Full sugar or NAS?

My dc do also drink fizzy drinks. They also drink fizzy drinks with their lunch and their dinner and they have at least 1 can when we watch a film and they have 3 or 4 cans at a party, and they usually have 2 cans when we go out for dinner. My dd is 16 and my ds is 15 so I can't really control them now. They love fizzy drinks as much as I did, so I don't know if my condition would make them stop having or wanting it.

This is terrible. Can’t you talk to them about the health conditions you have and your bad teeth, and tell them it will happen to them too?

There is no excuse nowadays. I grew up with quite a poor diet but I still make sure my kids eat vegetables and they have never tried a fizzy drink, even my 8 yo. They are not missing out at all.

I’d go to the Dr about this. It must be psychological. Humans are supposed to drink water!!

Cabbagefamily · 19/05/2025 06:45

Could you try counselling or even hypnotherapy for an addiction?
Please stop your DC from drinking fizzy drinks - that’s really important. I don’t think I’ve ever had a fizzy drink in my life and I’m 59. My grown-up DDs have never had one, as far as I know.

scotstars · 19/05/2025 06:53

I gave up fizzy drinks for health reasons. Now I either have J20 or a fruit juice when out, at home I have cordial there are some nice fancier ones around. Now I don't miss them you get used to it think of the money you will save not buying 20 cans and cigs every day I would treat yourself to a spa day or weekend away!

EmpressaurusKitty · 19/05/2025 06:53

Well, if this is a genuine thread rather than a game, the OP’s kids probably won’t want to end up obese & toothless.

I’ve been wondering lately if titles in the I Used To Drink… style rather than I used to drink… are* *more likely to be AI-generated.

UrbanMonstrosity · 19/05/2025 06:56

Is this a typo? Do you mean 20 cans a week?
A pp is correct - it’s not that you’re not “allowed”, you’re choosing to make this change. Choose health, choose being around for your dc, choose a better life.
Don’t have the drinks in the house and don’t buy them or your dc. Let them know your situation and get them healthy too.
Get some counselling and support.

AnyoneWhoHasAHeart · 19/05/2025 07:19

This is literally not possible.

If the OP is drinking 20 cans a day she must be drinking 2/3 cans an hour given she also has to sleep.

That’s 6.6 litres a day, and given the average can of drink contains 12 tsp of sugar that’s 240 tsp of sugar a day. And that’s aside from sugar in anything else she eats/drinks.

With that amount she’d be an obese diabetic in kidney failure and that’s before we get to the aneurism.

OP I am currently in hospital on the urgent transplant list. As part of the fact I’m in heart failure I have a 1.5 litre fluid restriction, and the dopamine I’m on to keep me stable is included in that.

The cardiologists are very clear that fizzy drinks are a definite no. They increase your heart rate, up your sugar levels. There is 0 benefit to drinking them.

NellieGirl · 18/05/2025 20:55

My doctor told me it's the apartame in fizzy drinks that causes heart disease.

Why would your GP tell you, OP, that aSpartame is the cause unless you completely forgot to tell him you were only drinking regular Coke, not diet or zero ? 🤔
