(Very light-hearted) Does this ever happen IRL and outside of movies?

Watching some American teenage comedies and honestly it made me think that I've never seen someone actually give a wedgie in real life.

I've only ever seen them mentioned on TV as a slapstick prank.

Do people actually "prank" each other this way? It was never a thing when I was at school.

Yep, it's a thing. My siblings and I can attest to the fact.

The only ones I've ever had are the ones you get "naturally" when you're like moving around and it shifts a bit.

Some of the kids used to do it to each other when I was at school (late 70's).

School in 70s/80s too often saw a wedgie, a noogie, and a wet willy in the playgrounds.

Oh what fun it wasn't

Try giving someone a song wedgie:
Play a very catchy tune, The Final Countdown is a good one, and seeing you can get the song stuck in other people’s heads.
Less likely to end up in trouble with HR giving a song wedgie than an actual wedgie!

It’s the Final Countdown!

No wedgies when I was at school, half a century or so ago. The most popular prank among the boys was the “deadleg”, which looked bloody agonising! No personal experience, thankfully.

ViciousCurrentBun · 19/05/2025 13:46

Boys at school in the early 1980’s were doing it to each other for sure.

BritishCupcake · 19/05/2025 14:01

To me it always seems like a "slapstick" prank that was used in American cartoons/comedies. Was wondering if people actually do this in real life haha.

It's basically an earworm right?

Definitely was a thing in the 80 and 90ss when I was at school.

Also, I get the sense that it's still a thing, sometimes, based onc omments made by DS aged 14.

What has your DS said?

I know at my DSs school (back in year 7) there was a trend of "paintings" in the locker rooms

Sometimes he says something about wedgies specifically, or there are sort of loaded comments. He's VERY committed to boxers though I notice..... Grin

My DS's secondary years were 2012-2017 at an all boys. He tells me that wedgies were occasionally given every now and again. He tells me that he got given a wedgie once when he was 14.

BritishCupcake · 02/06/2025 12:56

Thanks for the replies! Made me chuckle. Was surprised to hear this happened here in the 70s and 80s. I always assumed it was just an American thing that started in the noughties.

Yep. I had many brothers. Wedgies, noogies, purple nurples, dead legs, pantsing, wet willies...

Lots of crop dusting.

The only thing I never actually saw was a swirly.

Were these done from brother to brother? Or did you end up in their crosshairs?

Had to read what a "purple nurple" was. Ouch!
