Any sympathy for the British drug mule in Georgia?

I was reading about this girl and actually do have a little symapthy. She is obviously vain, stupid, misguidedly ambitious but I don't know whether she is real player in the drug trade and has probably been groomed into carrying drugs by men promising her the earth.

The penalties for drug smuggling are understandably harsh on Georgia but should the UK try and get her to serve a sentence in the UK?

Drug arrest girl 'in China scam to foil Amazon ban'

Culley, 18, is said to have received £550 in return for her passport information, which was then used to open a business account on the digital marketplace.

Very little sympathy - but yes, I think there should be an attempt to get her transferred to a British prison.

How does that equate? We lock up foreign offenders but demand the British back. No thanks, leave her there.
She loves cash and will earn far more from her story, if her sentence is served abroad.

Sarah2891 · 18/05/2025 12:17

Nope. She's a fool.

PoodlesRUs · 18/05/2025 12:17

They better make sure as hell no male is left alone with her with they're from legal, medical, the prison, the embassy etc. She'll be desperately trying to get pregnant at any cost. Failing that, she'll likely start throwing allegations around about harrassment or mistreatment given she has zero personal responsibility and the way she's tried to wriggle out of stuff. The family already tried to get sympathy by saying she wants to be a nurse but all she's done is some random college course and no actual nursing course or training. They are now claiming she is pregnant...sure, you are a believeable and creditable person, not.

The narrative in the media would be very different if this were a Georgian or Thai man or woman who had smuggled drugs into the UK.

PoodlesRUs · 18/05/2025 12:19

Funny how the DM claims UK prisons are too soft and luxurious at various times throughout the year yet every prison holding a Brit abroad is "barbaric". I wonder what the Goldilocks of prisons looks like to the DM.

Clairegreenhen · 18/05/2025 12:20

No sympathy for her, she knew what she was doing and no dont think she should serve her sentence in the UK, she did the crime there she has to taken the punishment from there, its the impact on that country for her actions they decide the punishment

Untery · 18/05/2025 12:20

I wonder if she misunderstood the cannabis is legal in Georgia . Perhaps not realising there were still really high penalty for smuggling

Thindog · 18/05/2025 12:21

I feel very sorry for her.
She has been stupid, but the young often feel invincible and do stupid and illegal things. She needs to understand the seriousness of what she has done, but we don’t know if she has been groomed or misguided or what motivated her.

So she was snuggling 14kg of drugs maybe thinking it was ok? Really?

That argument only really works if she was caught with a small amount (personal use). She'd be high as a kite all the time with 12,000 joints worth of cannabis in her bag!

I have a lot more sympathy for Shamima Begum than I do for this woman.

First, because of their respective ages and second because SB was doing something she believed in (however misguided) rather than being motivated by personal greed and a flashy lifestyle.

I absolutely do not condone what SB did but I think she has been very harshly treated, both by the Government and the media.

Agreed, although you are brave to say it on this forum.
Very interesting to compare how Scandinavian countries dealt with 'their' ISIS brides who of similar age with how SB was treated.
No gov would risk the wrath of the Reform voter and treat her fairly.

Committed a crime in a county, so you serve your punishment in that country. Not the UK.

dont care how harsh it is. Stupid people need to realise their consequences.

Pianoaholic · 18/05/2025 12:23

I am not sympathetic. 18 is definitely old enough to know better.
I disagree about cannabis not being a 'serious' drug. Possibly this attitude is what leads people to take these risks in smuggling it, because somehow it isn't seen as a serious drug, therefore the consequences will not be serious.

I read somewhere that she may face life in prison though!

If you ever watch Locked up abroad/ Banged up abroad (same programme uses both names)- you see the life in prison sentences often come down to 15 years or less over time/ they get paroled or transferred back. Still the best years of a woman's life though- sad to lose them either way.

If anyone hasn't watched the programme I'd highly recommend it- its on the Disney channel streaming- some fascinating stories.

Not realising the penalty for smuggling? Fuck me😂

Yes, I agree. Shamima was actually only a girl and had been groomed by an ideology.
This is an adult doing this for greed.

PhilippaGeorgiou · 18/05/2025 08:14

She did not do something stupid. She did something illegal. Absolutely nobody can have got to the age of 18 without knowing that (a) drugs are illegal, (b) smuggling drugs is illegal, and (c) a whole lot of countries have laws and prisons that are a lot harsher than those in the UK. No sympathy.

I wonder if it was an 18 year old black male smuggling drugs into the UK if people would be sympathetic.

Exactly and to add to this something (in my opinion anyway) deeply immoral and unethical. It’s not just “something stupid”

'Only a girl' Beggum was involved in a terrorist organisation who were murdering people. I know who I think is the bigger threat to our security.

Gloriia · 18/05/2025 12:35

I've no idea why they arrest these young stupid mules at the airport. Surely it isn't rocket science to involve intelligence sevices, follow them and also arrest the people who are going to be receiving the drugs.

I know who the Islamists are, thanks. Yes, 14 actually is a girl. Did I say she shouldn't be punished for participating in a fascist, antisemitic, homophobic, nihilistic organisation?
No. However, she was groomed and that's very clear. She is paying for her crime, rightly so..

Lordlaughaloud · 18/05/2025 12:39

A pp asked what if it was your child, well of course most would help their child caught in that situation and most likely want leniency for their daughter, but that doesn’t make it ok.

The judiciary is supposed to be fair and impartial, it’s not here to act as a parent to offenders whether they’re 18 or 80 ,hence we don’t allow families to be judges in cases involving their kids!

And to rightly so - I mean plenty off parents would try get their kid off even if it was a murder charge!

So while I can understand it’s only natural for her family to want leniency and try protect her, no I personally don’t have much sympathy for her. I do wonder what kind of upbringing she’s had though so that does make me feel a degree of sympathy of her parents are neglectful.

I have little sympathy for her but she is just small fry isn't she. There'll be a another 18yr old taking her place. Customs need to Google surveillance methods and use these hapless idiots to lead them to the big crims.

You minimised what she was involved in. 'Groomed by an ideology' Confused, she willingly joined a terrorist organisation and we know she was present if not actually involved in murders and suicide vest preparation.
Getting on a plane and smuggling cannabis is clearly illegal too but Beggum deserves all she got.

She was a child, you’d be singing a different tune if it was your own.

Welshwhales · 18/05/2025 12:44

Yes, young, stupid and naive . Probably only saw the cash incentives . I have warned my children NEVER to carry anything for anyone through customs, young , old, pregnant etc. I think it's an awfully sad situation all around .
