Improving my life

Hello everyone,

I hope you don't mind me starting a thread; it's mainly an accountability thing for me and to record how I go. I've been feeling pretty down for a few years and just quite sad, not really living or enjoying anything in life, just existing.

But I look at others and I want to start living again, really living, feeling things and enjoying them. I lead quite a solitary, insular life. It was my birthday this month and I turned 38 years old. And if I don't change anything, how can I expect anything to change.

I don't want my life to look exactly the same next year or to feel exactly the same, so I've come up with some goals.

  1. I'd like to lose 2 1/2 stone. Hoping this will occur with some of the other resolutions I've set.
  2. I want to run 5k in 30 minutes. I'm building up to this and will join a running club starting at the end of the month.
  3. Swim 3x week, I find this good for my mental health.
  4. I'd like to bake one dessert every week but other than that I'd like to cut out all sugary sweets and treats. Did this years ago for 3 months and it was great.
  5. I really need to book some holidays and time away to go and relax. I never go away anymore, haven't been on holiday for years and am probably burnt out.
  6. I'm going to try and do one group dance class a week for the next 6 months and really commit to it.
  7. I'd love to get to an intermediate Spanish lesson, so will sign up to Spanish classes later in the summer once I've revised to a certain lesson.

I think this is it for now. I do wonder if it is still quite solitary though.

I love that you’re doing this for yourself, taking control of your life and future happiness. May I suggest starting with whichever of these items you would consider a quick win? It’s a positive way to begin and can help build momentum and confidence. Maybe take a holiday to Spain with the intention of using some beginner’s Spanish? Best wishes!

Love your positive list OP. I agree with above - start with the most achievable and yes, book a holiday to Spain! I learnt Italian last year for our summer holiday. I was really proud of myself for sticking with it every day, although I haven’t kept it up. Am hoping to pick it up again though.

Am also trying to lose weight. Proving a bit harder than it used to now in my late 40s, but I definitely feel fitter.

Good luck with the new you!

Thank you!

so I weighed myself today and I am 12.1 stone.

my goals for this week, starting today:

  1. to have no sweets for the next 7 days
  2. attend my dance class on Monday.
  3. swim on Wednesday afternoon, Thursday and Friday I think.
  4. run Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
  5. learn Spanish vocab: food, shops, clothes and professions.
  6. research holiday destinations and renew my passport!
