Passport Question

If I have applied online for a new UK passport but have not yet sent the old one off, can I still travel on it? The old one is in date for the next 8 months.

I just found out that I’ll be asked to cover for a colleague on a work trip.

Depends which country.
Also remember it expires from the date of issue.

Six-Month Rule": Some countries have a "six-month rule," requiring your passport to be valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry or departure.

give them a call and check. Might not be cancelled until received, or could be when application is received.

For where I’m going, it’s fine.

It's whether the passport office has cancelled it, as I’m in the process of renewing online (but have not sent my old passport back to them yet)

Shall contact them on Monday.

Just curious if anyone has recent experience

I did a renewal about 2 months ago, the new one arrived pretty quickly, in about a week. So depending on when your work trip is you might have it back in time anyway? You will need to have sent off your current/old one though before they’ll do your new one.

Does your passport have 10 years from date of issue? Required post brexit regardless of expiry date

I thought the same as @readytotumble that the passport office won’t start work on your new passport until you’ve returned your current one. Certainly that was the case recently, when I renewed mine because the current one had less than 6 months on it.
By that reckoning, you ought to be able to use your current one quite safely.
