"Dear xxxx,

I’m Jayne Wall, and I look after Customer Service here at M&S. I am sure that you will have seen in the news that we have been dealing with a cyber incident and I wanted to write to you about what this means for you.

What has happened?
To proactively manage the incident, we immediately took steps to protect our systems and engaged leading cyber security experts. We also reported the incident to relevant government authorities and law enforcement, who we continue to work closely with.

Unfortunately, the nature of the incident means that some personal customer data has been taken, but there is no evidence that it has been shared. The personal data could include contact details, date of birth and online order history. However, importantly, the data does not include useable card or payment details, and it also does not include any account passwords. For more detail, see our FAQs.

How does this affect me and what should I do?
You do not need to take any action, but you might receive emails, calls or texts claiming to be from M&S when they are not, so do be cautious. Remember that we will never contact you and ask you to provide us with personal account information, like usernames, and we will never ask you to give us your password.

To give you extra peace of mind, next time you visit or login to your M&S.com account on our website or app, you will also be prompted to reset your password.

We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused to you and all of our customers.

Thank you so much for shopping with us and for your support, we never take it for granted.

Jayne Wall
Operations Director"

I haven't bought anything from M&S online for over a year. Weird.

Yes I had the exact same email.

I've also not ordered for a year.

JudgeBread · 16/05/2025 20:46

You don't have to have bought anything recently for your account to still exist, they've likely just sent it to anyone with a registered email regardless of account activity.

Exactly! Really not that weird.

Yes I've had it

I can't remember the last time I ordered online from M&S but I had that email yesterday too. I do have an M&S credit card though (very rarely used)

ThisIsMyYearToFindMyself · 16/05/2025 20:50

Like a pp said, I have an account therefore received it.

Dontsayyouloveme · 16/05/2025 20:51

Yes I had it.

They put on social media that they were going to force anyone who had a m and s account to change their password the next time they tried to go online.

I'm not sure 'force' is quite the appropriate language. They've had an incredibly sophisticated hacker attack blackmailing them for millions. They are losing huge amounts both in shops due to restocking software being blocked and reordering software unavailable. Unlike some victims they have refused to be blackmailed and are sorting out a new system - to replace the hacked system they cannot access that took years to develop.

Fair play to them they are not paying. Let's support them in what must be a hugely stressful time not just for them but for farmers to factories who supply them.

Well done M & S for not giving in. Hopefully they'll hold out.

Jane958 · 16/05/2025 21:51

Thanks all, glad to know it wasn't some weird "scam" as I am not in the UK.
I just found it rather ironic as I used to work for M&S as a Saturday girl in 6th form and during my summer holidays, when I was a student.
I have also spent a lot of the past 15 years working in cyber security.

@PrincessofWellsForce was probably the wrong word but once I went in to the app, I couldn’t get in without the password change. It was a good thing, yes.

B1indEye · 16/05/2025 21:54

Millions of people will have had it, it's not weird at all

All that information has been in the news. This one was posted four days ago.

I order from them all the time and haven't had any communication at all. Odd.
