Anybody had an engagement ring resized?

So my partner proposed last week and as I said yes and put the ring on, I thought wow it fits how amazing. Some time after I realised it didn’t, it kinda did but it was spinning around too much as it was a bit loose and didn’t feel comfortable.

He took it back to get the right size for me, I went too because I wanted to make sure what size I definitely needed whilst I was there. The size I need isn’t in stock anywhere 😭 I can either wait (which could potentially be tomorrow or could also be in 3 months time) or I can get it resized. However, the lady did say it’s not always possible to resize rings, especially ones with stones around the band, so I need to wait and see what their jeweller says first.

Has anybody successfully had a ring of this sort resized at all? As you can imagine I want to wear my ring so badly! It’s gutting! 😩

yes I’ve had mine resized. It is a solitaire ring with small diamonds on the ‘shoulders’ but the small diamonds don’t go all the way around the band.

Thank you, that sounds identical to my ring so that’s very promising!!

Likewise. Mine go half way around the ring. It was very quick getting it resized and I got it back within 2 hours. But yes, if your stones go the whole way around it’ll be a much bigger job.

You’re welcome! Fingers crossed it’s as easy.
Mine was from an independent jeweller so we just took it back to her and she did it quickly.

Yes I had mine resized, same as you after wearing it for a few days realised it was too big. It’s a trilogy diamond with a narrow gold band, took it down 1 or 2 sizes.

Yes I had mine resized and they took the extra bit out from the plain band at the back if that makes sense? So yours should be fine

I had this issue with inherited rings. Bought this (see below) and it worked brilliantly and was really easy.

You just squeeze the resin on the inside of the ring and then cure it using the lamp provided. You can add multiple layers to get the size you want.

Didn’t impact the design/structure of the rings, just stopped the swirling on my finger and you can’t see it at all.

Took me about 20 mins to do it (needed two layers) but super simple and I’m cack handed as hell.

Make sure you put the resin on the back two thirds of the ring as you want the front to stay flush as you wear it.

Caveat is that it’s probably only good for a couple of ring sizes and only suitable if you have a solid surface at the back of the ring to work with.

Sorry to add one ring sounds very similar to yours with a central diamond and two smaller ones on each side with a plain gold band.

There are also instructions on how to remove the resin if you want (I haven’t needed to) without damaging the ring so if you wanted it professionally re-sized you can in the future.

That said I quite like the idea I have some ring room if I ever needed to size up remembering during pregnancy I had to lose my ring for the last few weeks!

So maybe if it’s not ultra big this is an option

I've had several rings resized over the years. Yours sounds a bit big at the moment.

My advise would be to (a) wait until the warm weather hits - it might fit tighter then; and (b) if you intend to wear it with your wedding ring, take into account that it might need to be a bit bigger than when you're just wearing it on its own.

"bit bit" changed to "bit big"

I think the general rule of thumb (or finger!) is 2-3 sizes up or down.

I recently found a stunning antique eternity ring but they couldn't down-size it 4 sizes. It half band fairly decent size diamonds.

CoolCapybara · 13/05/2025 20:07

Yes I got mine resized (smaller) sent back with the jewellery shop, can't remember which one it was. We had to take it in and they sent it off, it didn't take too long

NerdyBird · 13/05/2025 20:52

If the stones are all the way round they need to be unset, the size altered and reset. You may find it fits differently if you wear it with a wedding band, mine did. I had a ring keeper which sits inside the band when just wearing the engagement ring but it's fine when worn with the band.
