Vinted pile does my head in

😆 don’t get me wrong, I love Vinted.
but our spare room is taken over by the piles of things people might not actually buy

  • the toddler clothing bundles cos they grow so fast there’s constant clothes
  • the cheapo fast fashion stuff I bought and now obviously no one else wants it either
  • The really nice baby clothes I’m either waiting to pass on to my sisters or might keep myself but we’re undecided about another.
☕️ tell me your irrational Vinted pains

Sometimes I put on ebay and things just shift there quicker.

FiveBarGate · 14/05/2025 08:38

I just buy it all second hand and then donate. Easier to be a buyer than a seller!

Bonbon21 · 14/05/2025 09:01

Can I just say thank you to the sellers on Vinted?
I don't buy a lot but do check regularly and always get new with tags or new without tags. I always pay the asking price and I always find sellers really nice with some going the extra mile to answer questions.
I have ever been disappointed in my purchases.

So thank you!

My cleaner asked when i was going to dispose of my floordrobe so he could hoover. I took the whole lot to the charity shop the next day.

I hear you. I have nearly 400 items listed between eBay and VINTED and around the same still to list. I've lost six of maybe seven stone now, with kids, partners, mums stuff it's everywhere. The washing, ironing photographing takes ages. I'm addicted. We are at the EVRI shop twice most days and I get so excited for the feedback and money in my account.

Have EBay or Vinted reported your account to HMRC yet? They do so after 30 items sold per year. I’d love to sell all my clutter but cba to deal with HMRC where I have to prove it’s my things I’m selling, so I stop selling once yearly limit is reached to avoid being reported.

They haven't reported mine as far as I know, though I have heard of someone now having to pay tax. I've sold over 200 items, so I am expecting it to be looked at.

The difference though, is that the person I've heard of (friend of a friend) buys items at car boots etc and sells on Vinted. I haven't bought anything to sell, I am selling my own personal (used for the most part) possessions. That's not taxable.

I believe it becomes taxable if you're selling for more than you paid for it. And the first £1000 is tax free anyway, assuming you haven't used this allowance elsewhere

dontcryformeargentina · 14/05/2025 09:58

@OrangeQualityStreetAreTheBestThanks for your reply! My issue is you will still have to spent time dealing with HMRC and it will be stressful to prove that you are selling your own clothes as I personally don’t keep receipts.

OrangeQualityStreetAreTheBest · 14/05/2025 10:06

@dontcryformeargentina I'm fairly confident I won't have to deal with them, at least not in any detailed way where I have to prove anything. At most I expect to have to confirm that I am not trading for profit, or buying goods for resale.

I believe HMRC are using this new data they're collecting from online platforms (vinted, ebay, airbnb etc) to make sure those that are registered for self assessment are declaring the correct amount.

The offers of £2 less than an already low asking price

I find things go straight away or not at all...

Totally agree. I now have a month or so cut off.

Wishbone436 · 20/05/2025 11:51

Hahahahah my Vinted pile is next to my work desk, it drives me loopy 🤪🤣

gingercat02 · 20/05/2025 12:49

I set a time limit and then charity shop if they aren't sold.
So month at full price, a couple of weeks reduced and then gone.

eBay? Thought that had gone to die. I really struggle with Ebay. Looks like it’s just full of Chinese manufacturers and nobody ever looks at my items. I’m surprised at so many people saying they do better on eBay – but good on you. Maybe I’m wrong

Edited

I think that eBay and Vinted have slightly different markets. I haven’t been using Vinted for very long, but so far I’ve noticed two types of buyer. The first are people who looking for something high end and/or unique, and are happy to pay if they like it enough. The other kind are people who just want to get things as cheap as possible. I’ve found that the young, instagram worthy brands like Sézane sell very quickly on Vinted.

I think that eBay tends to have an older market - this is where you shift that old Joules top.

Vinted definitely seems to have a lot more traffic for clothing

There is a lot of Chinese crap on eBay, but I would usually search on brand, so these items wouldn’t come up. It’s rubbish if you search for something generic like ‘black dress’ though.

Vinted is a great business for Vinted itself, and a good bargain for clients, but it's resellers who bear the cost of it all.

If you really add up the time it takes, storage, shipping, etc. and the ££ made, most sellers never make NMW/hour spent. All that work profits others, commissions for Vinted, lots to scroll for clients. That's the model.

Yes it amazes me that people can be arsed to sell stuff for a couple of quid. They’d make more if they spent that time doing an online survey or something similar.

MidnightMeltdown · 20/05/2025 15:28

My eBay/Vinted stuff goes into a box in the attic once listed, and then forgotten about. Out of sight, out of mind. There have been quite a few occasions when I’ve randomly sold something on eBay that has been on there for two or three years!

This is partly why I don’t entertain low offers. It’s got to be worth my while going up to the attic to look for it! 😂

Unbeleevable · 20/05/2025 15:32

I want to say a huge thank you to the determined sellers who keep all this stuff in their homes hoping it sells - I tried selling and it drove me nuts!

I am now only a buyer. Just bought a pair of kids swimming fins for a few quid on Vinted which were listed 8 months ago. And a vintage magnetic travel board game kit so I can play chess on holiday with dd1.

Very happy.
