I just posted an anonymous letter to a neighbour. Oh God. Panicking.

I live in a Victorian terrace with a back lane. There's a man who lives about 20 doors down from me who let's his dog shit in the back lane.

It's hard to confront him because he lets his dog out into the back lane, then he buggers off back into his house. So its not like he's stood there while the dog's shitting so you can say "Oi, mate, your dog just shit, pick it up".

Anyway, I'm sick of it.

So today I posted (like into the post box, not through his door) an anonymous letter which says the following:

"Dear [Man]

A group of neighours from [My Street] and [Next Street] have seen [Dog's Name] fouling in the back lane on multiple occasions.

It's selfish, it's a public health hazard, and we're sick of it.

We have gathered photo and video evidence that its [Dog's Name] doing this. If you don't start picking up after [Dog's Name], we will be sending the evidence to the dog warden team and environmental health at the Council.

Yours,
Neighbours"

I was feeling all brave and bold about it. But now I'm panicking that I actually went through with it. 😂

The old case of log it and leg it!!
careful . It may backfire.
personally I would have confronted him face to face and offered him a legal recourse with the council in the first instance. Then backed it up with actually going to the council. You need to find out first what evidence the council requires to act ? Then gather it and submit it to them. This may require camera evidence- some costs here .

When my son was a teenager, his best mate's family had trouble with a neighbour's dog pooing in their garden. The boys got a brown paper bag, put one of the poos in it, sat it on the guy's doorstep and set the bag on fire, chapped his door and ran away. He opened the door, started screaming, stamped on the bag, got covered in poo. He didn't allow his dog to do it again but I gave my son a hell of a rollicking cos it could've turned really bad! I don't advise it peeps!

haha the least he deserved!

If you aren't threatening to do anything illegal (which you aren't) and if the actions you are criticising are illegal (or at least a civil offence. Not sure what category dog fouling is) then you are mostly ok. The thing that is problematic is that videoing people in public without their consent or public notices warning them, that could get you in trouble. Cctv cameras are only supposed to capture what goes on on your own property. If you limit your video evidence to footage of the dog, with no humans in sight, that's probably ok as the dog doesn't have the same rights obviously.

People have no expectation of privacy in public spaces, or in private spaces visible to public thoroughfare.

They are fine to record video.

Well done!!!!

Good for you!

That’s the next step

I'd be more inclined to scoop it up from the back alley and toss it into the dog owner's back garden ... he can then deal with the matter 😏Chances are you would be spotted posting it through his letterbox!

LushLemonTart · 19/05/2025 11:05

Yes @Skibbgirl . She can do it stealth like at night🥸

LetterPostie · 19/05/2025 20:01

Just an update- No new turds have appeared in the back lane since the letter was posted 😁

That's a great result. The neighbours owe you a debt of gratitude.

so you can’t speak to him because he goes back indoors when the dog is doing it, yet you know the house he lives at to post a letter? I’m confused? Surely you could knock and speak to him?
