I just posted an anonymous letter to a neighbour. Oh God. Panicking.

I live in a Victorian terrace with a back lane. There's a man who lives about 20 doors down from me who let's his dog shit in the back lane.

It's hard to confront him because he lets his dog out into the back lane, then he buggers off back into his house. So its not like he's stood there while the dog's shitting so you can say "Oi, mate, your dog just shit, pick it up".

Anyway, I'm sick of it.

So today I posted (like into the post box, not through his door) an anonymous letter which says the following:

"Dear [Man]

A group of neighours from [My Street] and [Next Street] have seen [Dog's Name] fouling in the back lane on multiple occasions.

It's selfish, it's a public health hazard, and we're sick of it.

We have gathered photo and video evidence that its [Dog's Name] doing this. If you don't start picking up after [Dog's Name], we will be sending the evidence to the dog warden team and environmental health at the Council.

Yours,
Neighbours"

I was feeling all brave and bold about it. But now I'm panicking that I actually went through with it. 😂

Why didn’t you just go straight to council with your complaint and evidence?

You’re on a hiding to nothing appealing to the better nature of someone who behaves like this.

Sidebeforeself · 11/05/2025 19:18

He wont care. Sadly, nothing will change.

Because the chances are she invented the part about having evidence.

Just as she probably invented the part about speaking on behalf of a group of neighbours.

If you aren't threatening to do anything illegal (which you aren't) and if the actions you are criticising are illegal (or at least a civil offence. Not sure what category dog fouling is) then you are mostly ok. The thing that is problematic is that videoing people in public without their consent or public notices warning them, that could get you in trouble. Cctv cameras are only supposed to capture what goes on on your own property. If you limit your video evidence to footage of the dog, with no humans in sight, that's probably ok as the dog doesn't have the same rights obviously.

I love the confidence with which people on MN post pure shite 🤣

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 11/05/2025 19:22

👏👏👏!

Yep. The CCTV issue is that you shouldn't be filming other people's private property as you have an expectation of privacy in your own home.

There's no law saying you need permission to film on a public footpath. I learnt that off Police Interceptors Grin

helpfulperson · 11/05/2025 19:27

Why wouldn't you just report him to the council dog warden? It's their job.

Boreded · 11/05/2025 19:31

. Deleted as misread

MissMoneyFairy · 11/05/2025 19:37

If you do have photos or video of this then just send it to the council, how can you see the dog if you're not in the alley, can it be seen from people's windows or gardens.

I had an uncle who whose garden was fouled by a neighbour's dog. He shovelled it up, knocked on the culprit's door and said "I believe that this belongs to you!" whilst depositing it on the doorstep.

Mind you, Uncle was a police sergeant.

Yes well that’d confer a certain gravitas to the situation

orangedream · 11/05/2025 19:37

Does he have a camera doorbell? Let's hope not.

Did 'the neighbours' really ask you to speak for them?

Agapornis · 11/05/2025 19:41

It's not that anonymous if you're posting it through the letterbox yourself 😁😅

Which is exactly why the OP didn’t do this.

Who gives a fuck if she used some artistic licence.

Marieb19 · 11/05/2025 20:00

Does he have a ring doorbell? If he and the council don't respond you could always throw thd offending material back into hhs garden.

Ankther · 11/05/2025 18:13

Well done - though got me thinking… hand-delivering anonymous letters must be getting harder now so many people have ring doorbells!

I suppose you could always still post it.

Thisisittheapocalypse · 11/05/2025 20:24

Well done!

I'd actually report him if possible

LetterPostie · 11/05/2025 20:29

Thank you- you've all made me feel much better.

She posted it in the Royal Mail post box...

LetterPostie · 11/05/2025 20:32

It can't be seen from people's gardens, I've seen the dog fouling unattended in the back lane.

Yeah, the evidence bit is slightly embellished 😂 I have a couple of grainy pictures!

I did phone the council a while ago, they said they couldn't do anything without proof of whose dog it is.

Kind of speaking on behalf of neighbours- lots of us regularly grumble at each other about the dog shit in the back lane.
No one else knows I actually sent the letter though. I mean, we didn't agree to do that - I just decided to 😀

I'd say a new turd turns up a couple of times a week.

Olivio73 · 11/05/2025 20:37

Well done you have the right to a clean path , many dog owners unfortunately (not all obviously ) don’t care and are very lazy , our neighbours bought the biggest breed of dog don’t walk it and let it stay most of the day barking its head off continuously without intervening so we are thinking of doing the same as you ! It’s not ok !

LetterPostie · 11/05/2025 20:38

2dogsandabudgie · 11/05/2025 19:02

So have you actually put it in a post box so it's delivered by the postman? Did you put a stamp on it?

Of course I put a stamp on it 😂

OP posts:
Sidebeforeself · 11/05/2025 20:39

Can I ask why you didnt talk to the owner? Were you scared of an aggressive response? I just think ,as difficult as it is ,thats the necessary first step
