names of yesteryear

amooseymoomum · 11/05/2025 15:24

I was watching an old film and two characters were Sherry and Brandy. I did grow up with girls having this name but have not heard of it for years.
it is like the names Joy and Joyce very popular in the 60s which is when I was named Joy.
Is there any names you have not heard of for years?

Danielle. Not heard of any little Danielle’s for a long while. Youngest seem to be around my age, or at least 30 upwards.

Robert for boys. There’s a surprising number of little boys named John at my child’s school though.

I do know a young Joy, she’s pre-teen age.

Well, ‘not heard of’ in the sense that they are names of older people rather than being given to newborns, but names like Brian, Bernard, Malcolm, Gerald, David, Paul, Susan, Colin, Sharon, Linda, John, Nigel, Gary etc —but they’ll be around again in the not too distant future.

I've only known one Sherry my entire life (I'm 68) and that was short for Sheridan which in itself is pretty unusual. She'd be about 74 now. I've never met anyone called Brandy in my entire life (other than a dog) and I would have thought it was more of an American thing. I was a child of the 60's and Joyce really wasn't a popular name then. It would have been considered very old fashioned and was more of a 1940's name. Popular names in the 60's were Sharon, Susan, Jacqueline, Yvonne, Sandra, Linda, Deborah and Carol. Joy is a lovely name and I don't think really fits an era.

I know a little Agnes (about 8 I think). And I love the name Gary! Also love Joan and Jean and hope they make a comeback.

Robert is fairly common in Scotland. There are four in my DS class

Three aged 10 or under, that I know of at my daughter’s primary school.

I’ve not yet run into another child with my daughter’s name, but think I would if I lived in England it seems to be more popular there.

I met a little boy called Brian only the other day!

It’s a brilliant name.

Anthony is a lovely name. So timeless, but you don’t hear of anyone naming their son’s Anthony, or Tony.

SilverTapz · 11/05/2025 22:27

Joy isn't uncommon. I know 3 Joys under 10. All of African origin.

These names were popular in my primary school and seldom heard nowadays: Janet, Christine, Donna, Linda, Elaine, Lorraine, Lesley, Keith, Raymond, Tony, Gary, Mark. I'm mid sixties in age.

I only ever heard of an American Brandy.
Daft name.
As for old ones, I doubt that many babies are called Christine, Joan or Judith any more.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 11/05/2025 22:43

There were three Joanne’s in my primary school class. Born in the mid-70s.

Hohofortherobbers · 11/05/2025 22:45

Claire, Michelle, Nicola, Alison, Joanne.
Keith, Gavin, Graham, Richard, Russell.
All good names. Must be due a revival
