I know this has worked for MNers in the past. Walked the dog yesterday. Drove home so must have had them in the car or it wouldn't have started. Have looked in all the usual places and the Finder In Chief (DH) has looked but can't find them. Please share any suggestions as replacement car keys and fobs will be expensive 🙏

I lost mine too last night. After hours of looking this morning found them under the coffee table

Marshland · 11/05/2025 14:30

Are they in or near shoes?

MadridMadridMadrid · 11/05/2025 14:33

What were you wearing? Have you checked every pocket of every item of clothing you were wearing?

Ahsheeit · 11/05/2025 14:34

Hanging up with the dog lead
On top of the laundry basket
In the front door
Trouser pockets

AnSolas · 11/05/2025 14:38

In the footwell of the car
In the dogs bed

MadridMadridMadrid · 11/05/2025 14:39

Did you have a handbag with you? If so, check every section of it, including those you never normally use for your keys!

tealandteal · 11/05/2025 14:42

I find it helpful to physically retrace your steps. So go to the car and walk in, did you need them to unlock the door? Did you have shopping to put in the fridge or did you go straight upstairs for something. Walk through what you can remember and any places you might have put them down on the way.

And yes to checking any clothes you wore yesterday!

MadridMadridMadrid · 11/05/2025 14:50

Do you have a place where you keep any keys other than your car keys? If so, check there.

user1471538283 · 11/05/2025 14:54

When I lost my keys once I found them under the car! I must have been so distracted I dropped them and I didn't realise until I next needed them. Might they be under the car or in the gutter?

ThisSillyBeaker · 11/05/2025 15:10

How did you get into the house?
Did you lock your car?
Physically retrace your steps quietly and calmly.
Go through the clothes you were wearing.
Did anything different happen when you arrived yesterday (I lost my handbag once but then remembered I had ran out to bring in some dry washing before it rained. Had put my handbag at the bottom of the washing basket and I had left the washing on the counter to be ironed).

StarlightLady · 11/05/2025 16:31

Were you wearing anything with a hood? I once dropped my keys in a coat hood.

MrsJRHartley · 11/05/2025 21:15

I've followed many of the suggestions on here but no joy. I remembered I couldn't find my keys to take the dog out yesterday so took my husbands, but must have had my keys on Friday to drive home. Unfortunately DS often leaves the front door unlocked so I don't know if I'd have had to unlock the door. I can't find them in the car or on the drive though. Aaargh.

Sit down in a quiet room and let your mind rest for five minutes. It will come to you. Going forwards, I recommend an air tag, so you can easily find your keys when they are lost - no more wasted time spent looking for keys in our house these days :-)

MrsJRHartley · 12/05/2025 07:34

Definitely getting a tag for the next set.

I’ve left mine in weird places like the food cupboard, the fridge, freezer, bookshelves etc. I get distracted and put them down (my glasses too) and regularly spend time retracing my steps. Let us know where you find them 🤣

IceCreamWoes · 13/05/2025 06:26

I found mine once in a cupboard on top of folded jumpers. Do you have bags/clutter in your hallway? Worth moving it to see if caught up.

golemmings · 13/05/2025 06:49

I lost mine last week (house and office keys).

Couldn't find them. when I finally admitted that I, finder in chief, had failed to find them, dd15 said they were in her room because she'd lost hers and taking mine seemed reasonable.

In the absence of a teenager, I'd blame the dog.

mustytrusty · 13/05/2025 07:03

On the back seat of the car under something white.

MrsJRHartley · 13/05/2025 08:32

We have quite a clutter free house so not hiding there. I unlocked the car, put DH's keys back in the house and tried to start the car, it didn't start. My key has such a strong signal it would start if they were anywhere in there. DS denies all knowledge, but I'll check his room. As for the dog, how could you even think of blaming this angel?

Please help me find my keys!

Thought I'd update to say I found my keys. Or rather my H did. In his tool box. So we need to add that to the list of places to look in future. He is suitably embarrassed. I can use this the next 10 times I do something stupid.

Under plants adjacent to the front garden path? (It's where I found mine, 6 months later...)

ETA You've found them! Huzzah!

I got an air tag for Christmas from a relative. Don’t think it was that expensive. Totally saved my life as I was constantly losing my keys!

Dozycuntlaters · 19/05/2025 12:27

Well done, at least you found them!! I lost my vape once, found months later in my sons toolbox!!

Ah so glad you found them! Love it that it was hubby who put them somewhere stupid. I always get the blame in this house for losing keys and I do love when I am found not to be at fault 🤣

MrsJRHartley · 19/05/2025 12:45

Shame we found them after we paid £250 for a replacement. He'll never live it down (I'll make sure of that). And I have an air tag type thing to put on my new set.
