Witness to a drug deal. Have reg number. Report?

DameDoggieDoo · 11/05/2025 11:41

I witnessed a very blatant drug deal yesterday between a random car and a neighbour who I know to use recreational drugs. It took place right outside my house. I noted the dealers car registration plate.

Should I report it to the police? (I don't mean reporting the neighbour, I mean tipping the police off that reg plate XXXXX belongs to a drug dealer).

I work in retail in a dodgy part of town. I spend so long reporting shoplifting and anti social behaviour, nothing happens. So I have given up.

As above, expect more of the same then.

Motherknowsrest · 11/05/2025 13:55

The dealers also use those magnetic boxes (that surfers use to stash their keys in) under their cars for money / drugs. So, if a police officer has to do a quick search they might not find them. It takes a surprising amount of time and officer-power to search every nook and cranny of a dodgy car.

I report everything in my street. And I litter pick so would be main suspect for anything being reported.

If you don’t understand the police force as an institution, then you’re not going to understand the perspectives of those who do.

I understand it perfectly well. I have worked with it. I have studied it academically. I have used it, as a consumer and as a stakeholder. I have publicly criticised and complained about it when required. I am aware of its achievements and its shortcomings.

Try living in an area where people are maimed/ murdered for reporting dealers, you may change your mind. It doesn’t mean you agree with it, just that you value the lives of your loved ones more than you care about your neighbour buying drugs.

And when that same dealer starts selling cocaine to your children...?

It’s not my fault. I am not the criminal here. I just can’t spend another lunch break on hold to non emergency police when I spend the whole day rushed off my feet for shit wages.

Nousernamesleftatall · 11/05/2025 14:00

The police will do nothing so I wouldn’t bother.

God, the reach in some of these posts. I know you are not the criminal. I know it’s not your fault. Honestly! Anyway, a shoplift in progress would merit a 999 call, especially if there is fear of violence.

We get at least 10 shoplifters A DAY you must be deluded if you think they would come out that much. They won’t send a car for someone pinching a £9.99 tshirt. The local charity shop staff have been physically attacked and the police did come then to be fair, even with cctv they were told by the police they was nothing they could do, they had hoodies up so you couldn’t really see who they were.

I'm guessing the posters who don't get why people don't report it live in nice areas that don't have this problem. If you live in an area where there are drug deals or other dodgy things going on you keep to yourself and mind your own business, that's just how it is. The repercussions are sometimes horrible for people who don't.

No, I grew up on a council estate and as an adult have lived in nice areas and in areas with bad reputations for drug dealing.

I would always report, discretely.

I have also used disruption techniques. Being present, hovering around, staying safe, but removing the illusion of privacy and secrecy can often make people move on and be less blatant, less cocky and stop dealers feeling like they own the streets.

Re- read your post. You acknowledge that the Police DID come when someone was physically attacked. Why does the fact I have a different view to you make me “deluded”?

skippy67 · 11/05/2025 14:18

I wouldn't bother. A few months ago, quite late at night, a car parked up outside our house blasting out really loud music. I thought they were going to drop someone off, but after about 10 mins, music still blasting they were still there. I went up to our loft bedroom to have a look, and saw 5 guys, early 20's inhaling nitrous oxide from a large canister. They drained one, then started on another. DH called the police, who couldn't have been less interested. They asked us to note the reg number, but said they wouldn't be sending anyone out. This is despite the car still being parked, music still blasting, and drugs being taken. They stayed for about 40 mins, then tried to drive off. The driver was obviously intoxicated and couldn't get the car in gear, before eventually driving off, at high speed on the wrong side of the road.

You said ‘fear of violence’ which like I said it is 10 plus times a day.
The police did fuck all when someone WAS attacked. I am sure the police didn’t turn up the other 9/10 times that day when they had shoplifters and dodgy people hanging about drinking/drug taking and making it obvious what they were doing. They are in the same situation as us, in fact it’s probably worse for them as they are voluntarily there. I need the money.

CarCrashLifes · 11/05/2025 14:21

You should keep a log of incidents and I would keep on reporting .

No, you didn’t mention 10 incidents with fear of violence everyday. You mentioned one specific incident in a different shop. You don’t agree with me, I don’t agree with you. Either way, if you choose not to report it, thats your lookout. Just don’t then moan about it.

I did do. For a long time. Nothing happens. I am busy all the time I am there. I haven’t got the energy to keep doing it. Especially when the police don’t really care and can’t do anything. There’s probably 40ish shops in this area, big and small businesses, we have this problem all day every day. You would need a huge amount of police to make any difference. They aren’t prepared to do it.

Dorisbonson · 11/05/2025 14:28

I've taken photos and reported it multiple times. It seems to have worked. But new ones pop up nearby - it's the customers that bring the dealers to the area according to the police

Eventually had one of the local police officers email address to send photos and intel directly. Also other neighbours went out videoing the dealers whilst 2nd neighbour was with them on the phone to the police.

Most retail workers will tell you that most shoplifters would make you feel like there is a threat of violence. We are too scared to confront them. I don’t know why you cant get your head around the fact that if we phoned the police 10 times a day because we had shoplifters that they won’t do anything. It’s not like Heartbeat where Nick Berry will come and rescue us from some drug addict pinching a pair of socks.

Motherknowsrest · 11/05/2025 14:32

I live in a dump and I still report. The dealers were waving a knife around literally next to my house once (kids were playing out and started banging at the door to come in) and I had the police out straight away.

My head is perfectly round it all thanks, so you can lose the sarcasm. Report it or not. Just stop moaning!

Good for you 🙂 it’s such a relief to see a handful of people on here still prepared to stand up for what is right.

Ichangemyname · 11/05/2025 14:35

Yes. They are all over where I live so blatant. Except they use balaclavas and electric bikes so no reg to report. Otherwise I would too.

What others want to put in their body is nothing to do with me and im staying out of it.
I have my own life to get on with i have no time for things i cant control.
