Witness to a drug deal. Have reg number. Report?

DameDoggieDoo · 11/05/2025 11:41

I witnessed a very blatant drug deal yesterday between a random car and a neighbour who I know to use recreational drugs. It took place right outside my house. I noted the dealers car registration plate.

Should I report it to the police? (I don't mean reporting the neighbour, I mean tipping the police off that reg plate XXXXX belongs to a drug dealer).

I'm guessing the posters who don't get why people don't report it live in nice areas that don't have this problem. If you live in an area where there are drug deals or other dodgy things going on you keep to yourself and mind your own business, that's just how it is. The repercussions are sometimes horrible for people who don't.

PonyPatter44 · 11/05/2025 12:23

I would, and have done. House is still intact and not on fire, as am I. The police won't rush round with their blue lights on and shout, "Mrs Goggins at number 6 grassed you up!" but the information will go to force intelligence, and may end up being part of a bigger jigsaw that convicts people in the end.

As part of my job, I sometimes read police reports and the way cases against drug dealers are constructed is quite impressive. Even tiny bits of evidence are useful.

Try living in an area where people are maimed/ murdered for reporting dealers, you may change your mind. It doesn’t mean you agree with it, just that you value the lives of your loved ones more than you care about your neighbour buying drugs.

You have no idea where I have lived before.

WinterMorn · 11/05/2025 12:36

teenagersandtoddler · 11/05/2025 12:18

You may be right I have no idea but I have to think about my family and any potential repercussions. It is a big problem in our area and due to that we focus a lot on education and as we are involved in a youth group we tend to concentrate efforts there as opposed to reporting because that’s where you break the cycle. We’ve had a couple of really good speakers come in who made a big impact.

But then it could potentially become a bigger problem in the future when your kids become exposed to it. It sounds like you are doing a great job with what you are doing though.

And this is why crime is rising and becoming more blatant

The reason why crime is rising is because public services have been gutted, the economy is broken and the government doesn’t care. So why would I put myself at risk to report when the police don’t do anything?

WinterMorn · 11/05/2025 12:37

mindutopia · 11/05/2025 12:18

I personally wouldn’t, no. The police already know who the local dealers are. But short of catching them in the act with a huge quantity of drugs, it’s not going to go far.

The Police need evidence and people to report criminality to build a case.

HeartyOchreHelper · 11/05/2025 12:38

Might as well report but I’m not sure if the police will do anything with it.

You are guessing wrong. Do you think drug dealing only happens in run down areas?

If you honestly think this way, then you are part of the problem. Your apathy emboldens people.

Exactly! And let us not forget, those dealers, in the run down areas are working for top dogs who live in nice houses, in the nice areas!

No I’m not. I’m not doing anything illegal. And I won’t put my safety in the hands of a police force that I do not trust and is useless at best.

I think it’s because there’s no deterrent, there’s no punishment - criminals commit serious offences with little or no jail time.

Iwanttoliveonamountain · 11/05/2025 12:46

All you’re doing is giving them a number plates. On its own it doesn’t mean very much does it?

So we should just ignore it?

Liondoesntsleepatnight · 11/05/2025 12:49

Go to your local police force website and report anonymously, I did it with work men smoking spliffs and drinking ciders in their vans on a nearby construction site before driving (near loads of school children walking home). I suspect it worked as signage popped up about zero tolerance and random D&A testing on the site entrance a few weeks later

I would be more than happy to admit to admit it if that was the case, but it’s not. I’m not prepared to do the government’s job for it. Perhaps if the police force spent less time abusing women and messing about on social media they might catch more criminals? I certainly won’t be putting myself in danger to help them.

daffodilandtulip · 11/05/2025 12:52

Report all you like, they won't do anything.

I could have laid money down that you would come out with something like this, which is a nothing more than you pushing your anti-Police agenda.

You are absolutely right. I am anti-police. Because they are useless at best, cruel and abusive at worst.

The poster probably has quite a sensible approach to be honest. Those who don't live amongst it probably think it's wrong.

I'm on my own with two children 90% of the time. I know what goes on around here. I also know it's safer to for my children, family and self if I'm not seen as a 'grass'

Boreded · 11/05/2025 12:55

Obviously.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 11/05/2025 12:55

It would never have occurred to me. I’m surprised at the amount of posters who would do this.
