Part time job Birmingham

DS21 is at Uni in Bham. He’s looking for a part time job but it seems to be impossible! I’m wondering if this is the truth or are there actually loads of jobs and he’s just not making an effort??
He says everything is online (via Indeed) and he applies for things as soon as he sees them. But even though he says he’s applied for over 50 jobs - nothing!
He’s been round local shops and pubs and bars, with a CV, but they tell him to apply online…
It was never this hard to find a p/t job when I was at uni. What’s changed???

There should be more jobs on shortly as students go home for the summer/graduate

Sossusvlei · 10/05/2025 18:05

Thanks. So does this sound like a normal situation in a city that big?

Try in the city centre - theatres etc ?
also cinemas.

He’s right that no one goes round with a CV any more.

xmasdealhunter · 10/05/2025 18:14

yes unfortunately! it's a really tough job market at the moment

Devilsmommy · 10/05/2025 18:24

I've applied for so many jobs on indeed and the like and you just don't hear back nowadays. It's frustrating but he probably is telling you the truth tbh

No. He has plenty of choices of area - he can get jobs on campus or in Selly Oak or in the City Centre or areas around Selly Oak / Edgbaston or the clubs on Broad Street.
Yes, a lot of the supermarkets only take CVs on line, but there are also lots of smaller social clubs, cafes, bars, etc. As well as theatres and shops. Agencies sometimes are good to sign up with for more admin work. Has he looked at working at Edgbaston for the cricket season ? (Used to be via a company called Compass - not sure if that is still the case).
Can he teach anything ? - tutoring his subject, or music lessons, or sports coaching? Would he be willing to do referee training or lifeguard training?
What experience does he have? What skills does he have ?

StMarie4me · 10/05/2025 18:34

What’s changed?!

So all the people who should ‘get a job’ have got jobs.

Plus many employers would rather hire someone who can work anytime rather than around their uni course.

Plus the Govt have just hiked up NI and Corporation Tax so people are being laid off

Plus there’s a cost of living crisis

Need I go on?!

I went to Brum Uni (admittedly 500 years ago) and there were loads of jobs on campus working in the bars and shops and on security. Has he tried those?

Thank you. There are zero jobs on campus - he has tried everywhere there and asked at the Guild of Students (students’ union).
He’s been round Selly with a stack of cvs but everywhere is ‘apply online’ - even pubs and restaurants.
Esgbaston for the cricket is a good idea - I’ve told him to check it out!
He is bilingual so has been trying to offer lessons but no joy yet. I think he needs to try and push that more.
