We’ve been invited to a bbq on Sunday and I’m trying to think of something to take that someone else may not have thought of…what are your favourite things at a bbq?

Potato salad.

There is always too much food so I’d take some mixers and a spirit and make some cocktails, or Pimm’s.

I wrap and marinate salmon steaks, they always bbq so well and simple to prep.

I made up a BBQ salad a couple of weeks ago that went down very well in our house...cook & slice new potatoes, cook & slice hard boiled eggs (roughly 1:2 ratio, maybe a bit more potatoes) mayo, fresh pickled red onions (www.ocado.com/products/vadasz-pickled-red-onion-506121011) and dried dill

Bacon cherries. Introduced by South African SIL. Sound revolting. Taste pretty good.

I would take a fruit platter or big tub of berries

Rice salad. Cook and cool the rice the day before. Make sure you cool the rice quickly, I usually spread it out on multiple plates, then transfer to the fridge in a container or large Pyrex bowl. The next day stir the rice with a fork to break it up and add in very small chunks of your choice of veg. I really like cucumber and cherry tomatoes and a bit of beetroot. Then add some freshly chopped herbs (like parsley or coriander or both) with some freshly ground salt and pepper. Give it a good mix and it will be delicious.

Years ago I did bananas on the barbecue for a young teenage party and they were very popular. Slit the bananas, put brown sugar inside, wrap in foil, put on the barbecue. You could add rum with the sugar for adults. I don't actually like cooked banana, but everyone else liked them.

I find home made coleslaw always goes down well also.
