Getting my first car at 44!

So here I am at 44, suffered with anxiety pretty all my life. I've really battled through it this last year and passed my driving test. So today I'm off to go and pick up first car!😁 My stomach has been in knots all night cause I'm picking it up from a place 17 miles away. Haven't been there in a long time, so driving it home is making me nervous but I am also buzzing with excitement too. I was convinced it was never going to happen and I'd be stuck with public transport forever(very rural area here).

Not sure why I'm posting this but I love seeing positive posts about people's achievements, no matter how small they may seem to other people. So feel free to add your own positive little achievements 😁

Well done …. Big congratulations on passing your test. Have a great day 🏎️

Congratulations! I got my first car at 46, although unlike you it was for (lack of) finance reasons.

It was a revelation- all the new places I could visit. I hope this car will change your life.

Well done! What are you getting?

Puttinginthemiles · 09/05/2025 09:01

Congratulations, that's a huge achievement. Enjoy your new car and you'll be fine driving home. Fear of doing something is worse than actually doing it. You'll be so proud of yourself when you get home.

Thanks people.

@S0j0urn4r the least fancy car you can think of lol. It's a Suzuki Celerio. Low tax and insurance though. Starting small.

Fantastic! Enjoy your car!
I'm 45 and still hope I might have a car one day.🤞

Amazing! Just wait until the first rainy day when you don’t have to trek out & can go door to door.

Enjoy your new freedoms. For me it was the ability to take myself to out of town shopping places which I would previously have had to ask DH to take me to. Plus taking my kids to soft play without a massive walk with tired little legs or to parties without my initial thought being how will I get them there?

Confidence is something that comes over time with repetition so don’t worry if you are nervous at first, that’s totally natural.

Really pleased for you op, just take it slowly driving back and keep reminding yourself that you deserve this.
I passed my driving test age 36 and it was a huge thing for me to after years of stress and a divorce etc.

I've been driving 15 years plus now and I recently changed my car and it's taken me two weeks to get used to driving it so please please do not beat yourself up if it doesn't go smoothly as you expected you really do have to get used to a car.

It's going to make you so happy to just be able to jump in your car and go!
Xxx
