I have the feeling I’m going to lose my job today.

I’ve never been unemployed.
Had many jobs for over 40 years but always been in a job.
Things have been happening over recent months at my job that have made me paranoid and a gut feeling that something is about to happen. Not good.

Ive a meeting today so will know by the end of the day.

What the fuck do you do when “let go”?
Ive been scouring jobs on every jobs board there is and.. nothing. Nothing at all suitable anywhere.

I’ve got professional qualifications, I’m senior enough in my role, but there isn’t anything.

Tips from anyone who has been in this position are very welcome.

Recruitment agents? Depends on your profession but there are plenty in mine.

I’ve been made redundant
it’s horrible
but it does happen
Register with recruitment agents in your specialist field, get your CV up to date and looking brilliant; look at temporary and short term contracts
do you have any savings / partner ?

What has been happening? And what is the meeting today? What is making you feel like you are about to be fired?

If there is nothing at your level, and you have financial responsibilities, you will need to look for a lower level role and then keep scouring whilst working.

HermioneWeasley · 09/05/2025 08:28

How long have you worked there? What’s your notice period?

MissHollysDolly · 09/05/2025 08:30

Hope it goes ok for you today OP. These things are often not scheduled for a Friday, so people have the time to consider and come back with queries. X

I’m facing redundancy for the first time in my career, it’s very daunting as there’s no recruitment in my sector (HE), everyone is making redundancies. It’s terrifying. My team are in consultation at the moment, I’m still waiting at my level.

I hope you at least get enough of a payout to bide you some time. I think I’ll get 6-9 months depending on whether voluntary is on the table. But given the job market it’s nowhere near enough. Try not to panic, I am having good days and not such good days, But worry doesn’t help, and you’ll find a way through.

I’m also mid divorce so added worry as the future finances are all on me. If I think about it too much it’s overwhelming.

whatcanthematterbe81 · 09/05/2025 08:32

It’s crazy how you just know. I had the same. A meeting put in then both them people who were meeting with me both blacked out the 2 hours afterwards, I just knew something big was about to happen. I hope its not for you, good luck and sounds like you’ll be fine with your experience

I didn’t get any package, had only been there 6 months and they realised they made a mistake with the new structure (I think they should have got someone more senior than me but we’re being stingy) so I guess you could say sacked but not for doing anything wrong

I’m not sure what reason they will use, poor performance or redundancy.
People come and go a lot in this company over the few years I’ve been with them.
I’ve been pulled up for something recently. (Not a major thing, kind of advisory and not formal. Just a short conversation)
Since then things have changed.

Im looking, have good savings built up because I kind of knew it could be me next iyswim. About a years worth of bills covered.

Feels very very shit.

I do know that the last person had been around for under 2 years so got 2 weeks pay, that’s it. Policy is 1 week for every year worked.

Nope, really was quite minor with zero harm to anyone or anything.

I passed probation at 3 months.

ThomasShelbysfagend · 09/05/2025 08:42

That’s why they use “redundancy “ so no performance review needed.

No not me, this was a few years ago. Luckily I found a job so quickly that was even better. Everyone was telling me to take it further but with under two years employment I didn’t stand a chance. I took it on the chin and they actually helped me get the other job so all was good. But that day of the meeting and the couple of days before it was awful as I just knew but had to wait

Bestfootforward11 · 09/05/2025 08:51

Just to offer a handhold, you must be feeling awful. I’d say to try handle things today with dignity etc even though it may feel hugely unfair just so as to not burn bridges etc. This could well take you to a better job. Maybe look into free courses or something to upskill a little? Organise to see friends/family tonight and maybe plan something for the weekend just to keep moving and not sink. I’m sorry not to be able to offer more, it’s a horrible feeling and I wish you all the best x

Ozgirl76 · 09/05/2025 08:51

They can’t just make you redundant - there is a process. Nor can they just let you go if you’ve been there longer than 2 years.
Don’t just accept this! Check ACAS for a start. If it looks like this is disciplinary or redundancy read up on what they should do and what you can ask for.

I was made redundant a few years ago. Your company have to show you why your position is no longer required - it’s the position not the person that they make redundant. And it’s a process, mine took a few weeks.

As people suggested, you might be best getting advice.
