I have the feeling I’m going to lose my job today.

ThomasShelbysfagend · 09/05/2025 08:23

I’ve never been unemployed.
Had many jobs for over 40 years but always been in a job.
Things have been happening over recent months at my job that have made me paranoid and a gut feeling that something is about to happen. Not good.

Ive a meeting today so will know by the end of the day.

What the fuck do you do when “let go”?
Ive been scouring jobs on every jobs board there is and.. nothing. Nothing at all suitable anywhere.

I’ve got professional qualifications, I’m senior enough in my role, but there isn’t anything.

Tips from anyone who has been in this position are very welcome.

@Mexcitedfam congrats on the litany of deleted posts. Quite an achievement for one thread!!

I was thinking that too - and the thread isn’t even controversial!

Yes! I even searched out her other posts to see what the heck was going on, everything looks completely normal and ordinary 😵‍💫.

I wish there was a reason put when posts get deleted, many just vanish when the responses to them are normal, no one saying ‘omg how rude, I’ve reported you’ or similar. Just weird.

ThisIsMyYearToFindMyself · 09/05/2025 20:11

And massive congratulations OP, that must have been a millstone round your neck. Have a great weekend!

GoKatForDinner · 09/05/2025 20:26

What happened, OP?

For any of you who have been made redundant, if you are in technology, I know a good agent. PM me and I'll connect you.

I was made redundant 2 months ago from a Tech based company, it won’t let me PM you, are you able to drop me a message?

WalterMittysPuppet · 09/05/2025 20:55

Wow, that's a relief OP, congrats - aaaaaand relax!

Interestingly, I could have written almost your exact post. Things kicked off about 6 weeks ago and everything has been upside down since - people were laid off or had their hours reduced. I was asked to take a reduction in pay but I said I couldn't afford to (with a mortgage and bills to pay etc). I'm the only specialist in my niche area at the firm so I always felt reasonably safe and valued, but whilst my refusal to reduce pay was accepted, ever since then comments are being made by my immediate senior to undermine and destabilise me, to the point that I'm convinced they are preparing to get rid of my role and outsource it to save money.

It's been quiet for a couple of weeks and the subtle "negging" has mostly stopped - management have had these blow-ups before and it's always faded away again, they have soooort of reassured me that there won't be any further cuts, but this time they've gone too far and I don't feel the same. I can't trust anyone, so I'm actively applying and interviewing for a new job so I can hopefully resign before I get canned.

Pleased to hear this too, nice to hear some good news, it’s been a bit of a day.

User46576 · 09/05/2025 22:17

I’ve been dismissed twice. Sorry op it’s really hard but it does happen. You’ll get through this

Odd, I can't PM you either. Are you a recent member?

PiggyPigalle · 09/05/2025 22:40

Not everyone has PMs turned on, I don't.

LBFseBrom · 09/05/2025 23:41

I'm glad all is well for you. x

This gives me hope as someone who was just made redunant 🩷

Of course you will get something else! I can honestly say that being made redundant was the best thing career wise for me (though it didn’t feel like it at the time!) as I moved into a completely different sector. It was only when I got settled in my new role that I realised I was stagnant in my previous job and my new one by far was a step up for me. If I can do it so can you. All the very best xxx

caringcarer · 10/05/2025 00:56

Glad you still have your job.

Chezgb · 10/05/2025 18:11

I sympathise greatly. Similar has happened to me lately and the feeling is horrible. Just remember that it's not about you. Workplaces are not the same anymore and are extremely volatile. Sadly it's not about the job anymore, more about an insidious reality show. Employers go on about the equality act when most of the time they are breaking it every which way. Also they know that there are more people than jobs.
Horrible times, but just hang on in there. Don't let them get to you whatever the outcome, as said, it's more about them. A job doesn't define you. Hold your head up high. You're worth much more.

If it happens it happens, it’s part of most peoples lives so you just have to get on with it

And the award for empathy goes to ….. not you

MrsMrsD · 10/05/2025 18:36

6 pages of nothingness for a situation that didn't even happen. I love the Internet ha ha.

tommyhoundmum · 10/05/2025 18:44

ThomasShelbysfagend · 09/05/2025 08:42

That’s why they use “redundancy “ so no performance review needed.

By law you are only redundant if your job has gone. A week's pay per year worked is also the law, I believe.

It is important to remember feelings are not facts, and in a case like this it is better to wait for the facts instead of potentially unnecessarily stressing yourself out. When it comes to redundancy, firstly they have to give you notice and secondly, you might get a redundancy package depending on the job.

Where DO you want a job?
> Decide WHERE you woulld like a job - them MAKE it happen
Create a position THERE ...
> Now the UK has left the EU - is the organisation (where you WANT to work) fully compliant WITH legislation (your speciality area).
> Even IF it is JUST packin boxes
A box is a rigid, typically rectangular container
... these boxes do NOT meet the rigidity requirement UK (or location) laws
That IS your foot in the door

If you've always been good at what you do, quite a few colleagues must be willing to vouch for your abilities, Write or ring them and ask then to write you a testimonial. When you have at least three drop me a line and I'll tell you what to do next - I've hired many people over the years.
