People creating a WhatsApp group without asking

How do you handle this?
My neighbour had had some problems with her flat and created a group with me and a couple of other neighbours. I don’t want to seem unhelpful but if she ends up in a dispute with her landlord then I don’t want to be dragged in and I’d have typed stuff into WhatsApp if I type stuff in reply, I feel I could be dragged in.
This is awkward- if I don’t reply- as I’ll frequently bump into her.
This was a few days ago and I haven’t replied on the group yet.
How do folk handle things like this?
I wouldn’t set up a WhatsApp group without asking folk. There’s already a shared hobby group (with a lot of people) I’m in with her but I’m not specifically friends with her.
Thanks

Change your settings so you cant be automatically added.
Or mute and archive

TURNYOURCAPSLOCKOFF · 08/05/2025 20:10

Just quit the group and tell her you don't do group messages.

Thanks, it’s so annoying when people put you in a group without asking.

Yeah I did it by mistake when WhatsApp first started it. I thought it just sent a message to a bunch of people at same time to save me repeating myself. Didn't think about everyone replying 🙈 I hate groups and don't join them ever.

Urghh does my head in when people do this - it's the height of rudeness.

Thanks! Have just changed my WhatsApp setting even though I have no friends/family 😅 - but I’m scarred as it happened to me once by someone who doesn’t even talk to me for their personal gain and it peeved me off so much as you can’t invisibly exit it either without ‘admin’ knowing which is usually the person who invited you!

Weathersunny12 · 08/05/2025 22:56

Yes, you would think people would at least ask before adding!

It also exposes your number and identity (if you use a photo of yourself) to ransoms you might not want to share your number with.

Changing your settings is the way.

TURNYOURCAPSLOCKOFF · 09/05/2025 09:44

You can also set group security - so people can't just add themselves/be invited by non admins.

I have one for a community group - they have to be given the QR code,(by me or other admin) and they can make a request to join after that.

see my link earlier - then they can't do it...

So leave if you don't want to be part of the group. Or just lurk, or mute the group. It's not compulsory to take part, even if you're in the group.

Thanks, it’s so annoying when people put you in a group without asking.

It’s not exactly a massive deal.

You chose to give her access to your number.

You chose to have your WhatsApp settings so you can be added to groups without you agreeing to it first.

You have the option in WhatsApp to leave groups.

You’ve not been kidnapped into a cult. There’s a leave button ready and waiting for you.
