What do you think is the demographic of most Mumsnetters?

kmo0416 · 07/05/2025 23:21

Obviously mostly British but I wonder whether there may be some Irish due to Ireland's proximity to the UK in terms of geography and culture and maybe even some Australians or NZers as I've seen some threads for them specifically.

What about race/ethnicity? I would think most Mumsnetters were white as most Brits are white, but for some reason I also feel like Mumsnet is a sort of 'white' domain as I do not see much ethnic minority discussion though would be happy to be corrected.

What about age? I would assume most Mumsnetters were middle-aged or old as I wouldn't think of Mumsnet being popular with young people though some younger adults like young mums may be attracted to it.

What about socioeconomic background? I don't assume many upper-class people would be on here. Do you agree?

What about religiosity/political leanings? I feel as though Mumsnet like other online spaces is relatively liberal and not overly religious.

What about gender? Although this is called 'Mumsnet', there very well could be some men.

So what would you say is the typical Mumsnetter?

I would say British, white, middle-aged, working or middle-class (cannot choose between them), female, and left-leaning.

Unemployed and on benefits
their imaginary husbands earn over £100k and have a hobby which is outing

Late 30's, separated and now in another long-term relationship with a smug prick; the kids go to state school because they can't quite afford to go private but have told everyone it is from choice; look down on anyone who has to shop at Poundland out of sheer necessity; care about the environment but still go on long-haul flights and think they are middle class because they earn £80k each and sprinkle quinoa on their organic porridge.

Is ‘bitter’ a demographic?

Why have you posted exactly same thing on r/ukpolitics?

Journalist? Student?

Oh my gaaaawd, imagine if there were actual talk boards on MN answering your exact questions, OP??

ZenNudist · 08/05/2025 00:59

Doesn't answer the door
Hates their MIL
Thinks bog brushes are unsanitary

fancy not exploring the site before asking questions...

who on earth would do that ?

Gingerkittykat · 08/05/2025 01:13

Earns 6 figures but is still struggling financially.
Doesn't have their first child till 45.
have kids who are as skinny as a rail and attack any posters who talk about their overweight kids.

And the bitter men who are just posting for a female perspective and then proceed to tell you how awful their exes are.

Quite. They can’t even be arsed to look at the ‘Talk Topics’.

Just lazy.

Meanwhile the ‘hilarious’ tropes roll out. All MN posters don’t answer the letter box, hate their yet to be born future great mothers-in-law, eat fluff, and holiday on crudité rafts while Nero burns.

WHO IS SHE? we're all wondering@kmo0416 😂

WhiteRosesAndThistles · 08/05/2025 06:09

Lots of people declaring themselves middle class and/or high earners but so many threads about council housing and benefits (ie people stating they live in social housing).
I think a lot of people on here have aspirations.....

readytotumble · 08/05/2025 07:47

The point is that it’s an open forum and people know they can post on here and most of the time get a wider perspective without the influence of conscious or non-conscious societal prejudices. Or to receive brutal, honest, judgement by everyone with and without prejudice in some cases 🤣

I would say the typical mumsnetter is someone who’s on mumsnet!

Honestly, OP, your post reads like you’re looking for people to do your homework for you, or you’re trying to complete an assignment of some kind. I suggest you browse lots of different bits of the site. Then you’ll be able to draw your own conclusions.
