Was I mean with seller?

I have been looking for the perfect pair of ankle boots for ages. Mine which I loved, were completely ruined at a festival back in June, almost a year ago.

Found some for sale in my size, second hand but hardly worn.

They're my usual size. I occasionally have to get a smaller size depending on the fit. I have a pair of boots in this smaller size but most are this size, and I have a pair of heels in a smaller size too-but I have a lot of shoes/boots and most are the same size as the ones I ordered.

Got them and they're too small. They have my correct size marked on them and they're perfect otherwise. Seller said they don't accept returns unless they're at fault and can I stuff them with something to stretch them, or only wear them with tights or pop socks...

I argued that they should haev been advertised as a 'small fit', in their description.

Genuinely what do you think?

Sorry I think you're being unreasonable. How is seller to know they're a small fit? They have x size feet, the shoes say x size. How are they meant to know it's a small x or a normal x? How much did you pay? I think it's annoying but one of those things. Sell them on vinted.

MaybeBabyOneMoreTime · 07/05/2025 09:30

Yeah sorry I think you're being unreasonable here. It's the chance you take with second hand stuff.

goody2shooz · 07/05/2025 09:30

Thats the downside of Vinted, eBay etc. It happens to us all, just resell them if you don’t think they’ll ease. It’s not the seller’s fault the boots don’t fit - you know how sizes can vary! They might be small fit on you but absolutely fine on someone else - or even too big, how can the seller know? All they can do is sell them at the size on the shoe, anything else is conjecture.

Seller is totally in the right. You’ll have to sell them on.

TonerNeedsReplacing · 07/05/2025 09:32

YABU. This is a risk buying second hand.

glittermittens · 07/05/2025 09:32

Agree with pp, unreasonable to expect seller to know that. It's a risk you take when ordering second hand items.

babasaclover · 07/05/2025 09:33

They sold the correct size it’s really not down to them if the manufacturer comes up small. YABVU

Calmdownpeople · 07/05/2025 09:36

OP come on. The seller has done nothing wrong and been honest and above board. I get you are disappointed but YOU shouldn’t have researched the fit before YOU bought the boots.

You are being completely unreasonable.

SheilaFentiman · 07/05/2025 09:37

YABU. Why would the seller know that?

Out of interest, did you google the brand beforehand to see if there were general comments that it came up small?

Tulipsontoast · 07/05/2025 09:38

It’s not the sellers fault.

I’m often between sizes and wear a 3 or a 4. If I buy online it’s a risk that I take. Sometimes I’ll ask sellers to measure them which they do.

senua · 07/05/2025 09:39

Seller said they don't accept returns unless they're at fault
They are at fault, it looks like they were incorrectly marked up for size X instead of size Y. She knows this - it's why they are "hardly worn".

Can you prove the incorrect sizing by measuring them?

MemorableTrenchcoat · 07/05/2025 09:39

Genuinely, YABU.

How? They are second hand and listed as the size it says on the tin. It’s up to the buyer to work out if they fit.

MoodSwingSet · 07/05/2025 09:42

YABU. And if she had marked them as fitting small, another customer would demand a return because in her opinion, they fit normally. That's why I never comment on fitting - items are sold as the size they are marked, the buyer can google before purchase how this brand or item is fitting.

Noodge · 07/05/2025 09:42

I accept fully the 'being unreasonable' however I don't agree wiht 'how would the seller know' comments.

...Because they have feet, and have worn them?

Different brands may have the same size on the label but in reality be quite different. Some brands are notoriously a small fit or larger than true size. Up to the buyer to know their size in the brand or to check the brand website for measurements.

MoodSwingSet · 07/05/2025 09:44

Maybe the seller only buys brands that fit smaller, so she does not think those are particularly tight fitting boots?

dogcatkitten · 07/05/2025 09:45

If you want the option to return buy new, or make sure the seller will accept returns with no fault. If the shoes are vintage they may well be a bit smaller, all sizes seem to be bigger these days. And makers sizes vary quite a bit as well.

Doggymummar · 07/05/2025 09:45

It's up to you to research. I'm a size 12 in most brands, I bought some Hollister trousers on VINTED and they wouldn't go past my knees. When I looked online people said, more like an 8 and had returned them. I. Selling them on VINTED with, says size 12 but more like an 8.

Conversely, I got bad feedback from someone who complained a size 6 top was too small for them. It was marked as a six, and no way I would know that brand comes up small. My profile says things are thrifted and will need washing and do your own research so I got the feedback removed, but it is very much on the buyer to research brands.

I am selling a top for £3 and someone today has asked me to measure the length. It's next. Size 18 I would have thought that was enough info, but this person maybe has a long torso and needs to know. Always ask for measurements if you are not sure.

Some people really do tie themselves in a pretzel in order to prove OP is in the wrong.

Maybe they are thrifted, maybe they belong to a friend. Mum daughter.

grumblebutt · 07/05/2025 09:48

Yes just to echo everyone else, yabu. It’s disappointing but it’s the risk you take with second hand. Had it been shop bought you could have returned or exchanged but most vinted sellers (myself included) can’t be arsed with the hassle of returns.

She listed them as the size that they are. They are in good condition. She probably isn’t an expert on small/large/wide fitting shoes.

Sell them on, but don’t blame the seller.

Noodge · 07/05/2025 09:51

Doggymummar · 07/05/2025 09:47

Maybe-but if so the seller wasn't truthful, they said they were selling them for a specific reason (related to their feet, albeit not because they were too small)!

Exactly. I sell a lot of clothes and never mind giving extra measurements if asked. What I do mind is ‘I’m usually a size 12, do you think this size 10/14/18 whatever, dress will fit me?’ - how would I know?

Some people really do tie themselves in a pretzel in order to prove OP is in the wrong.

And some people will come up with any excuse to avoid taking responsibility for their own error. The OP also says “I occasionally have to get a smaller size depending on the fit.” So knows full well some brands fit differently.
