Who is going to be the next Pope

The Conclave starts today. I'm quite interested to see who will be the successor to Francis.

Seems Cardinal Parolin is the favourite. He's Italian. I hope its not him. Very conventional knows the ropes. Bit of a boring choice.

Cardinal Tagle from the Philippines. Now that would be a lot more interesting. There is a huge Catholic population there. He's second favourite.

Then Cardinal Turkson from Ghana I think. Now that will be really interesting. I think a good thing.

Then Cardinal Zuppi another Italian. Again boring. We need somebody to make a mark but maybe not too big a one.

Anyone got an opinion on this.

He didn’t really make any moves to incotporate gay people into the church-all he said was “Who am I to judge?”

Well, actually, you’re the Pope! If not you, then who?

Edited

Well, I can't remember the exact details but a year or so ago he said gay people in relationships could be blessed, or something like that.

No new pope yet then!

My dd has just said that if they were women they’d be in a bar drinking wine by now, having sorted it out beforehand in a WhatsApp group.

He said they could be blessed but not their union.

That's liberal Catholicism.

It's hilarious all those wanting a liberal pope but who will still loathe the stance of even the liberal.
They still wouldn't have women priests, they still won't accept gay marriage and they'll still be against abortion. However 'liberal' the media wants to portray them.

No pope is going to want to create a schism in the Catholic church and alienate Africa or Asia where the church is growing.

In truth, liberal or traditionalist the differences are going to be small.

Sidebeforeself · 08/05/2025 11:06

God knows. Literally!

Calliopespa · 08/05/2025 10:37

So maybe that’s his point: no one should.

His point was God will.

Your not sure if the Pope thinks that God will be the ultimate judge of us all?
🤣

Where do bears shit?

He said gay people could be blessed individually but their union couldn’t. There speaks a liberal, progressive Pope…..

Exactly.

Most progressive types hate what even a liberal Pope would teach yet Francis somehow got perceived as all cuddly and inclusive and people are hoping for another 'liberal.'

ThisLovingTiger · 08/05/2025 11:21

Thanks. So that's it really, Francis wasn't all that liberal, though the media tended to portray him as such. There's never really going to a liberal Pope in the way that current society understands liberal.

ThisLovingTiger · 08/05/2025 11:24

I suppose what happens with a Pope really is that they are responsible for maintaining the tradition and values of the Church, and if you're lucky they're good with people and the media. Same story, different face.

CurlewKate · 08/05/2025 11:27

Francis wasn’t particularly “sound” on clerical
sexual abuse either. But hey, he didn’t wear the lovely Gucci shoes. So super progressive….

ThisLovingTiger · 08/05/2025 11:28

Francis was bad on that. I hope the new Pope tackles that as a priority.

What do you think about his actions against the Latin Mass?

Would you say the book is better than the film (I've not read/watched either)

I would say read it first then film. Most of what I loved about the book, which is what Lomeli is thinking can't really be shown in the film. And the fascinating insight to the process, which I think Robert Harris did well.
Film is up next for me, maybe at weekend, so I am hoping they hold off electing somewhere til I've watched it.

ByGraceAlone · 08/05/2025 11:51

I agree with you @CurlewKate that Francis was hardly liberal and no pope is going to be.

We probably disagree on whether that's a good thing or not but at least we agree that progressive views in the Catholic church are hardly liberal in the secular modern sense!

ByGraceAlone · 08/05/2025 11:55

ThisLovingTiger · 08/05/2025 11:32

What do you think about his actions against the Latin Mass?

I attend Latin mass and love it.
It has restored and deepened my faith in a way the modern mass never did.

I think Francis was misguided in trying to suppress it I think the old traditions are speaking deeply to people.
The Latin masses are packed out.

I hope the new pope will embrace this renewal of faith the Latin mass is bringing.

RafaistheKingofClay · 08/05/2025 11:59

I don’t think anyone was under the impression that liberal in this context means the same thing it would in everyday parlance in the U.K. were they?

Seems a bit no picky to expect it to when the context of the thread is quite clear.

I’m saying I’m not so sure that he meant he knew exactly what God thinks.

There’s no need to get all rude and sneery.

What are people who are hoping for a liberal pope hoping for?

VaddaABeetch · 08/05/2025 12:05

I think some misunderstand the role of the pope. He’s there to uphold the church not change it. He’s more akin to a company secretary than a CEO

Calliopespa · 08/05/2025 11:59

There’s no need to get all rude and sneery.

I think he meant he didn't know, only God knows and God will be the judge.

He was withholding judgement.

Which is quite a big thing for a Pope to say, but he wasn't saying it was fine or now acceptable in church teaching.

It allowed him to look like he was saying something supportive whilst really not changing doctrine.

What do you think he meant?

CurlewKate · 08/05/2025 12:07

ThisLovingTiger · 08/05/2025 11:32

What do you think about his actions against the Latin Mass?

I’m not actually a Catholic, just raised among Catholics, so my views on things like the Latin Mass are aesthetic, rather than doctrinal. I think it’s beautiful and I love the history and mystery of it. But I do understand the strong arguments against it.
