Hate to say it, but when you read some of these replies, it makes you far less sympathetic to the whines of "I can't get on the property ladder and I can't afford to save" and "god the food shop is sooooo expensive, I just can't afford anything these days " I can tell you where your money is going. Lining a very rich beauticians pocket. Lucrative industry

I guess that’s only true if it’s the same people complaining about the cost of living who are also paying for lots of beauty treatments.

Yes! When I was saving for a house, we had less income when I was on maternity, I cut back massively. Now I’m working FT, I can afford a couple of treats every few weeks. My husband pays golf subs, goes out with mates more often than I do, why shouldn’t I have something for myself?

In the 80’s when my parents were skint my mum still got her highlights and perm done.

WTF?! You don’t know anyone’s circumstances on here! You’ve put two and two together and got twenty.

Ineedanewsofa · 07/05/2025 09:58

Nails every 3 weeks, haircut every 10-12 weeks. Gave up on colour during COVID (although toying with the idea of going back).
Had Masseter boxtox for my jaw clenching and teeth grinding, it has been life changing 😊

GameOfJones · 07/05/2025 10:04

Hair cut and a keratin straightening treatment every 6 months. I don't get it coloured as I'm trying to go grey naturally but the keratin treatment keeps it looking healthy and neat.

I go to the beautician every 6 weeks. Around this time of year and throughout the summer I'll get a pedicure. In autumn and the winter months I swap to having a facial or a massage.

Powder brows topped up every 18 months or so.

Dental hygienist appointment every 6 months.

K0OLA1D · 07/05/2025 10:07

Nothing. Haven't been the hairdressers in years. Shave my legs, pits and brows occasionally, and that's it, other than wash my face and hair and slap a bit of mascara and blush on when I go into the office

Squirrelsnut · 07/05/2025 10:18

Haircut x3 a year.
Dye it myself.
Very little else. I had a lash lift and dye a couple of years ago, it looked great but not great enough to spend £40 every 6 weeks.
Spray tan for my wedding in 2004.
Very occasional manicure/pedicure.

Owned my own house for years thanks!

Hair cut every four weeks, nails done every three, and the occasional massage when I am feeling flush.

Sofasloth · 07/05/2025 10:23

Hair cut every few years. I tweeze own eyebrows and laser my own body hair. I think when I start getting greys I'll start to get it coloured.

Devilsmommy · 07/05/2025 10:24

Zero. Not got the energy or inclination 😂

echt · 07/05/2025 10:29

I'm 70 and I do everything myself: hair colour, cut, eyebrows, foot care and toenail painting.

I am scant of hair and only tried once to shave my legs when I was thirteen. Never again. Can't remember when I last shaved my pits, though age has sorted that one out - not my memory Grin but the hair has gone away.

All this talk of massage has made me think I'll treat myself for Mother's Day next week (Australia).

RosesAndHellebores · 07/05/2025 10:32

Cut and colour every 7 weeks
I buy myself nice makeup and face creams

I am fair and not hairy

I wouldn’t dream of using botox or fillers.

I paint my own toenails and keep my fingernails short and neat.

That's it.

FedUpandEatingChocolate · 07/05/2025 10:32

Nothing!

I'm definitely at that stage in life where my focus is on the kids and not me. I'm trying to reclaim self care a bit at a time - current priority is gym and getting to a healthy weight.

My hair gets cut max twice a year.

Justfreedom · 07/05/2025 10:36

Moisturiser every day and night.
Suncream on hot days.
No make up.
Korean skin care set that works wonders.
Tcp or which Hazel as face toner.
Deodorant and role on.
I shave my own body with electric razor.
I have really good skin.
I shaved my head 2 year ago and let it go mad its now natural and hangs down my back a few grays but all good and very healthy.
And i get massage once a month.

Nsky62 · 07/05/2025 10:39

uncomfortablydumb60 · 06/05/2025 22:46

Hair cut and coloured every 4 weeks( very short pixie)
other than that, I don’t like to be touched.

Snap almost, hair cut every 6 weeks, colour roughly every 12 weeks, nor any face creams, handcream or conditioner.

JustSoFrustrated · 07/05/2025 10:43

Supersimkin7 · 07/05/2025 07:56

Brows threaded every month - I’ve got thyroid disease and your eyebrows fall out when it flares. Threading and home dye hides it.

Followed by visit to GP, optional, depends on how much eyebrow she gets off.

Can’t do nails, gardener. Did you know it’s much healthier to have gardening nails than clean ones? Better gut microbiome.

Home pedicure and, er, epilate Hobbit toes.

Do you ever worry about getting pin worms? I garden as well, but I always scrub under my nails when I come in from handling soil

Shetlands · 07/05/2025 10:43

I'm 71 and thankfully all the leg and armpit hair has disappeared!

Highlights (4 shades of blonde) and trim every 6 weeks.

Gel nails every 3 weeks.

Pedicure, leg massage & gel toenails every 2/3 months.

Eyelash tint and eyebrow tidying every 6 weeks.

I'm not interested in having anything invasive like Botox or fillers. I don't love my wrinkles but I prefer them to the waxy, puffy, swollen lips look I've seen on some older women.

My weight is fine but what I really need is a personal trainer to improve my core strength and fitness. I don't have the discipline to do it all by myself!

LindorDoubleChoc · 07/05/2025 10:46

I have a hair cut about 4 times a year.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 07/05/2025 10:51

Of the OP's list, just hair cut every 10 weeks.

  • I shape and dye my own brows.
  • I don't use injectables.
  • I don't colour my hair.
  • I use a home IPL for hair removal, now on maintenance schedule so it's once a quarter or so with a razor in between for strays.
  • I don't have my nails done. They are kept natural, just clean and filed short.
  • No fake (or real) tan.
  • The only time I've had professional make up done was for my wedding, 25yrs ago. I don't wear make up day to day and prefer a minimal make up look for events.
BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 07/05/2025 10:54

I do pay for Pilates tuition though, which is more about supporting my mobility and strength as I have hEDS, than vanity. Though it does have aesthetic side benefits.

ASDnocareer · 07/05/2025 11:05

I have PCOS related excessive hair growth so all my money goes on hair removal (electrolysis and laser hair removal)

Rooxjo · 07/05/2025 11:13

I’m having a lot done on my face recently due to extensive reconstruction and trying to get back to some level of normal. polynucleotide Injections, a gentle laser I’m not sure of the name of? And lots of gentle facial massages.

also love getting a full body massage at least once a month

cut my own hair and do my own laser hair removal.

queenofthesuburbs · 07/05/2025 11:24

To reply to a PP, I do think that some young people don't deny themselves anything. I teach in a university and a lot of my students all have expensive nails/fake tan/nicely highlighted hair/expensive trainers/latest phone etc.

I'm obviously far more wealthy, but don't indulge myself in this way (and my daughter has only one pair of expensive trainers as opposed to a different colour for different outfits as my students do).

Maybe it's because they think they will never be able to save for a deposit that makes them think, what the heck...who knows?

MereNoelle · 07/05/2025 11:27

Rather than beauty treatments, I try and spend my money on the basic stuff that will hopefully stand my in good stead as I age. Good skincare, good quality and healthy food, gym membership, Pilates classes etc.
