Simple to use non smartphone

Want to get my 9 yo son a non smartphone as he's starting to travel to things like football practice etc independently.

I bought a cheapie one from Amazon but it's actually not very straightforward to use (hard to navigate through to messages or make a call for example) so he can't confidently use it, which makes having it pointless really.

Any recommendations for a simple handset that will let him call or message us easily? That is intuitive to use and not overly complicated?

Thanks

Any suggestions?

DD had a Nokia in the beginning. It was ok but she really hated texting with the old style buttons and it was basically just an emergency one, definitely not to communicate properly.

Have you looked at Doro? They are designed to be simple to use for the elderly, so should be OK for a 9 y/o. They also have a built in panic button which will text a GPS location and place a call too IIRC. Also, not too pricey.
