Could you tell me about weight gain or weight loss on HRT?

Just wondering about experiences (I’m talking about using oestrogen gel plus progesterone capsules). Wanting to prepare myself!

i did post this in women’s health but had no traffic so thought I’d try chat

I have been on it 6 months and my weight is the same.

ETA I am taking what you plan to take

Ilovelowry · 03/05/2025 09:44

The progesterone phase made me feel hungrier, but I was also very emotional when I first started and progesterone magnified this.

Lost half a stone after the three month initial phase was up and been fine since.

If you just exercise and eat as normal you'll be fine.

I've been on it for 2.5 years now and I am exactly the same shape and size I always was, without hormonal boobs now hurrah!

Been on Elleste duet for 3 years now - no change in weight that wasn't self imposed.

VinoWitch · 03/05/2025 10:22

This is what I wanted to hear, thanks so much everyone!

I had put quite a bit of weight on in the year before starting hrt. I’m on the gel and tablets too.

In the nearly year since taking them I’ve lost all of that and more, but I am also using weight loss injections.

socks1107 · 03/05/2025 10:25

I’m only on the gel but have lost since being on it. My mood is stable so stops the emotional eating

VinoWitch · 03/05/2025 10:29

Yes I’ve heard lots of stories about an average of a stone in weight gain but I’m hoping that if I feel less shit then I’ll be less likely to emotionally binge eat and maybe even move more

I have found my joints hurt less with the oestrogen so that can also help with movement.

I suspect it can vary as in the peri stage our natural hormones are all over the place! I found that I lost weight easily when I first went on HRT but that did change as time went on and other symptoms appeared. I’ve had my HRT tweaked a few times accordingly.

I think you have got to get your eostrogen spot on. Finding the right product is crucial - patch, spray, gel, tablet - they seem to work differently in some women. The other important action is muscle-strengthening and weight training so that your body responds to food in an optimal way.

VinoWitch · 03/05/2025 10:41

@BrunchBarBandityes I’m trying to figure out how I could start doing strength training but due to kids and job I’d have to do it at home. Have bought a 3kg pair of Dumbells and that’s as far as I’ve got

@VinoWitch I highly recommend Caroline Girvan for weights. She has a paid app but lots of free YouTube content.

Ilovelowry · 03/05/2025 11:16

Hi OP. Highly recommend bodyfit by amy on YouTube. Totally free. Does the workout with you.

Get 5kg too if you can and a 5 or 6kg kettlebell.

This will get you in great shape.

VinoWitch · 05/05/2025 14:32

Thanks @Ilovelowry, I’ll look her up along with CG!

I’ve lost weight because I feel better in myself so I’m more likely to eat well and exercise.

TorroFerney · 05/05/2025 14:57

Not a jot of difference to my weight plus or minus. But didn't expect it to have. What i don't have is two periods a month, a desire to self harm and to also divorce my husband for no reason.

I know the exact feelings you describe!

From what I gather from people, it’s not like steroids that puts weight on by itself, its that it can increase appetite so if you control this and exercise you’ll be fine
