It's seeming more of a class war than politics at this point.
No one wants to point out that the working class are the ones assisting this, they are not the victims. That WC image of the eternal underdog needs to die.

As usual, most of the votes for reform were in working class populations who didn't experience higher education.

This is cultural, and more discussion about this in terms of social class is necessary. I am bog standard MC and feel almost alien in my culture at this point. We barely have a voice.

Because working class areas get the brunt of mass immigration. Unskilled immigrants all move in and their culture changes and pressure on public services.

The political class who've forced this on us live in their nice leafy suburbs. The middle classes happy to facilitate it mass population growth keeps their house price high.

WomensRightsRenegade · 04/05/2025 15:58

People just want Labour to listen. This may now affect the mostly middle-class, leftie, well-off majority on mumsnet but removing benefits from the disabled with a very broad store is a savage thing to do. I know people who have MS and score 2 for every category. They will now lose all their PIP and their partner will lost their carers’ allowance. When they genuinely can’t work.

If the Tories or Reform had done this there would have been cries of ‘fascism’ nonstop. Labour get away with SO much. Same with removing the winter fuel allowance, wrecking the economy/ job market etc

And again, reflexively cry ‘racism’ all you like but you have to be a deeply unserious person not to see that thousands of young men from very diffferent cultures arriving on our shores illegally every day is a recipe for disaster. The Brits are the most tolerant and welcoming people on earth - they’ve always welcomed immigrants. But illegal immigration is costing us millions of pounds every single day. That is WHY disability benefits and WFH have to be cut, and why your kids can’t find housing. No country can sustain a completely open border. And Labour just aren’t getting it. Managed immigration is a great thing. But this is vastly different to the situation when we were younger. Assimilation is an immense problem too.

Essentially Labour only seem to be about serving the luxury beliefs of the affluent. They couldn’t given a stuff about the working class.

I also want to know why the fuck shoplifting isn’t being criminalised again. Things like this wreck the fabric of a society. Why zero motivation to tackle it? It could be done very quickly

I'm hoping Reform will be pushed into showing their true colours. The people who are voting for the them are the very same that would come out worst under a Reform government

BurntBroccoli · 04/05/2025 16:26

happinessischocolate · 04/05/2025 09:22

The results aren’t actually that bad despite MSM making a massive deal of reform.

Reform gained 677 councillors - conservatives lost 674

Labour lost 187 councillors- Lib Dem’s gained 163 and greens gained 44 (ind lost 20)

so the conservatives voters have stayed right wing and the Labour voters have stayed left wing

we just need to make sure that any failures by reform councils are publicised and they dont get to blame their failure on the government.

hopefully voters will get to see how ridiculous the reform policies are before the next election AND Labour get rid of Starmer though I’m not sure any of labours current replacements would do any better.

Which indicates that Labour are absolutely failing to sway Reform voters to Labour.

Labour need to appeal to the Lib Dems, Greens and their existing voters by using progressive policies, not austerity and a continuation of failed Toryism.
A move to the right for Labour will alienate any existing support they have.

I am glad they are in at council level and so early in the GE cycle, as their actions will actually be seen at a local level, and while they can "blame" Labour for any problems, it will be harder to do that on a granular level than if they were in power everywhere. People want their bins collected, services to improve and council tax to go down (not all possible, I know).
If people have truly voted for active, useful people, then maybe it won't be too bad.
They didn't get in where I am but their candidates here did no campaigning, addresses "withheld", no photos and no policies. They still got a lot of votes (second in most areas) but far from a majority.
If they lose popularity, something else will have to rise from the ashes - hopefully not something worse!

I wonder how many “clowncil ” posts there will now be on Facebook when Reform are in charge?

Patronising much ???

I don't think it's patronising to say that. We've all got gaps in our knowledge (I've got loads!) and most people in the UK aren't hugely politicised, understandably, as we're busy trying to stay afloat.
I don't think many people realise Nigel Farage wants to dismantle the NHS and institute a US style medical system. It's a terrifying prospect and I really do hope the electorate wake up to the potential horror of a Reform government before the next general election.
I'm disillusioned by Labour too, but I voted Green at the last election, and hell would freeze over before I'd even vaguely consider voting for Reform. Farage and co are racists, no matter what they say to attempt to hide that fact.

kkneat · 05/05/2025 09:38

To the person that said my post was patronising, why was it patronising? I know very few people that voted for Brexit and the ones who did mistakenly thought it would stop illegal immigration! How can it/ could it, it’s illegal immigration? Same as the two Reform voters I know, they don’t look at the bigger picture, just at illegal immigration. One didn’t even know there are people emigrating out of the UK or that the illegals don’t get access to welfare benefits when they arrive. What can Reform do for the overall greater good of the whole country. I’m very worried.

I agree that targeting the disabled is wrong and would press for that to not go ahead.

But the rest of this post, oh dear. What is ‘illegal immigration’? People arriving on small boats accounts for less than 5% of all immigration and most are using their LEGAL right to claim asylum. The majority of immigrants to the UK arrive legally to study (creating income for our universities) or rejoin family who are already settled here (again can be beneficial in retaining talent, for example for the NHS). There’s a conversation to be had around how this is all managed, but the ‘stop the boats’ rhetoric will achieve nothing. Curbing Airbnb and the like would be more effective in popular areas.

And shoplifting is of course wrong, but we know that rates are much lower for shops that retain fully manned tills/ no self check outs. These are multi million pound businesses - they need to play their part if shrinkage is a concern. The taxpayer shouldn’t be paying for extra policing if they won’t help themselves.

notprincehamlet · 10/05/2025 09:04

Ballot papers need a 'none of the above' option so that people can protest at the ballot box without voting for the worst possible option and shooting themselves in the foot. Do the people of Runcorn etc really think that Reform give a shiny shit about them?

JohnTheRevelator · 10/05/2025 18:21

I really hope they never get into power because I'm under the impression that they are keen to get rid of all disability benefits and forcing everyone to find work.

I've heard some Reformers talk about workhouses. I imagine that's the way things are going.

Their decision that councils should stop flying Ukraine flag says a lot:

  • Pointlessly make something into a culture war issue (pretty sure they see support for Ukraine as 'woke')
  • Show complete ignorance of why Ukraine's safety is also about Britain's safety
  • Also ignorance of how the wellbeing of different countries in general is interrelated
  • Give just that little boost to Russian interests

Makes one rather doubt their 'patriotic' credentials

Farage has often spoken of how much he admires war criminal and dictator, Putin. It's hardly surprising he's making a show of siding with Russia.

Echobelly · 10/05/2025 18:58

I wouldn't be at all surprised if someone finds strong connections between Russia and some Reform people. Russia loves any group it can use to destabilise other countries
