Does Cocaine make you slur your speech?

I have a friend who has mental illness... I've never really figured out what the exact thing he has is, but words like anxiety and psychosis have been said in conversation.

I'm certain he does have something because he gets all the payments and flat etc..

The thing is he's always skint, for years his thing was beer, he'd constantly be drinking in his place and at the pub but he's knocked it on the head for a few months and his belly has gone down in size.. I have become very suspicious over the last few weeks that he's on cocaine now big time. He's always dabbled occasionally but i think it's now a regular thing for him now. He never has any money, he gets paid every thursday and sometimes he's "skint" on thursday and cannot meet up with me.

I called him out on my suspicions and he basically attacked me verbally and blame me for stuff. I was on the phone to him in the morning and his speech was slurred like he was drunk or something. I asked him about it and he just said "i'm ill i have psychosis"

I dunno what to think..

I think either way you should step back from this friend - they don’t sound healthy for you

NoBodyIdRatherBe · 01/05/2025 22:11

I’ve not known coke alone to make anyone slur

OnArainyNight · 01/05/2025 22:13

It might be medication he’s taking, for psychosis

strawlight · 01/05/2025 22:13

No, coke doesn’t make you slur. Maybe he’s taking something else, maybe it’s his medication,

NeilDiamondsBlowDry · 01/05/2025 22:14

No not slurred more very chatty

PleaseGoDontGoAgain · 01/05/2025 22:15

Does he slur? Was he slurring?
your title mentions it but the post doesn't.
You've always known he bought coke but niow you're wondering if he's buying coke?

PleaseGoDontGoAgain · 01/05/2025 22:21

Wtf does this even mean?
He gets the things he needs and some random person who gets pissed with him (is he paying) now wants an inventory?

What is your role if you're noticing he spunks all his money up and you do nothing????

Listen to what your saying. No medical professional diagnosis, but either he or you are diagnosing serious issues. Issues so serious they cause you to not call an ambulance when your sober partner is slurring his words?

YAY the diagnosis he has given himself means you can't challenge him. That's handy for someone wanting to keep taking coke If he ends up dead of coke heart attack this post won't help you.

Sack him off

Greycatclub · 01/05/2025 22:34

No it doesn’t, not that I’ve ever witnessed.

ThatLilacHam · 01/05/2025 22:34

I don't know exactly what he has... But he has a flat and disability payments every week and once a month. He used to spend all his money on beer (i met him in a pub).

I'm pretty sure he's on cocaine full time now. There are other details that i won't share here.. I just wanted an opinion about the slurring thing.

I take psychosis medication and don't slur. Also, it's taken at night so certainly wouldn't slur in the morning.

I've seen people on coke and they're hyper and chatty. Sounds like alcohol may be involved.

CagneyNYPD1 · 01/05/2025 22:42

To answer your question @ThatLilacHamslurred speech isn’t usually a feature of cocaine use. It is found far more frequently with heroin users.

That said, if he is using significant quantities of cocaine as well as prescribed medication then slurred speech may occur.

Either way, you would be very wise to consider why this person is in your life.

ElaineParrish · 01/05/2025 22:47

I wouldn't want to jump to conclusions about him using drugs..
But I was going to say that a lot of cocaine users also use illicit downers like benzos, pregabs and stuff like that.
I think it's to relieve the anxiety that cocaine causes them.
They might cause slurring

Why? you know he's got addiction issues. Addiction issues ARE mental health issues.
He cannot control his speech when with a new partner????? Walk away

Endofyear · 01/05/2025 22:50

If your friend suffers from psychosis, he's almost certainly on strong antipsychotic drugs which can definitely cause slurred speech. Cocaine doesn't, it can causes fast and gabbling speech.
