My Dad is in ICU, he has had a heart valve replacement operation today. Unfortunately there were complications; his heart stopped during. They managed to get it started and decided to finish the operation but his breathing is not stable. He's on a ventilator and they have kept him sedated/paralysed. Doctors have advised for family to visit when they can as they don't feel he will pull through. He is very poorly. We (DH and I) plan to travel through very early tomorrow morning. His wife is with him and has a room at the hospital so she is video calling to keep me updated. She has her family there supporting her. I'm very restless, on my fourth sugary tea and don't know what to do with myself. Mum died 11 years ago (3 days and 11 years in fact) very suddenly. I'm past myself to be honest and contemplating it will be a long night.

Here with a hand op. Sending you all much strength and thoughts.

Oh darling, I'm sorry ❤️🥺. You will get through this, just one phone call, video call, small step at a time.

I hope with everything that he will be okay

SnowSnow · 01/05/2025 20:13

Sending lots of love xx

ShieldMaiden8 · 01/05/2025 20:15

I'm sorry op. Send you strength and lots of love Flowers

Busy yourself here. Hold off sugary tea for a bit, you don't want a sugar crash, will only feel worse and more jittery.

What is your dad like? Mine hates hugs but is the first one to turn up at hospital if I'm unwell.

gemdrop84 · 01/05/2025 20:32

Thank you everyone. He's a proud (stubborn!) Yorkshire man is me Dad. But he's always been there for me through difficult times, we have a bit of banter and take the mick out of each other but done so with a lot of affection.
I plan on taking a book to read to him when am there tomorrow. I'm now on water as my head is banging. Feeling a bit sick so had some crackers as that's all I can face. Paid a couple of bills, looked at some Travelodge/holiday inns for prices and plan on walking the dogs soon. Just doing some housework right now to keep occupied. I keep crying but doing some deep breathing exercises to help regulate.

I am so sorry to hear about your dad, he sounds like a lovely man. Hand holding from afar.

PoodlesRUs · 01/05/2025 20:41

What sort of book does he like?

Dog walking sounds like a good plan.

mintydoggyv · 01/05/2025 21:27

My heart goes out to you . Please don't give up hope as yet . All the very best for dad the hospital are still good even if many run them down . It sounds as if you are going to see him . So very good luck l really hope he pulls through prayers and all the best .

gemdrop84 · 02/05/2025 16:07

Thank you everyone for the kind comments, it's very appreciated. I've travelled to see Dad this morning. He is stable and they have halved his sedation medication. On my visit he did appear to respond slightly to me talking and some noise on the ward by opening his eyes and moving his head. His sats are better and he is breathing better independently. So fingers crossed he continues to make progress and gains consciousness at some point.

Ah Op I send my best wishes your Dad recovers. It actually sounds like he may be well on the road to better health. The heart staff are truly wonderful people. Take care yourself as no doubt you are worried. I send you hugs.

gemdrop84 · 02/05/2025 22:35

Thank you, he has had to be sedated again as he is still having some trouble breathing, was very responsive but became distressed about the ventilator/tube. Doctors are hoping a good night and days rest under induced coma will be good for his recovery. Also they are hoping this will give his.body time to settle from the trauma.
The nursing staff have all been amazing and spoke about how strong willed he is today.
