Which supermarket/s do you shop in?

Thrilling thread, I know Grin

We have a Lidl at the bottom of our road but we don’t like it, never enjoyed their own brand stuff and their fruit and veg goes off really fast (in our store). Instead, we drive to Aldi which we love Grin in our town but not really walkable with shopping. If we need branded stuff then we pop to our local Tesco, again a drive but local. We also pick up snacks in Home Bargains. Where do you buy your shopping?Smile

If there’s an ASDA store near me, I’m going there. I actively look out for an Asda store cos years ago when I was new in the country, they gave me a job with no UK experience. I’ve since moved on to a better paid job, but feel indebted to them.

Davros · 01/05/2025 10:59

I go to M&S foodhall because it’s 120yards away. I take my shopping trolley. The shelves were quite empty the other day though. We have no large supermarkets left nearby. None. They’re all being redeveloped into 100s of flats. We lost Morrisons a couple of years ago and the Sainsburys is soon closing for the same reason, it was like Armageddon the last time I went, being run down and chaotic. Because we live in London zone 2 it is deemed that we don’t “need” big supermarkets. I use Tesco for online shopping maybe once a month because it was the only supermarket I could get a slot with during Lockdown despite being ECV. The others did catch up but I’ve held it against them!

EleanorReally · 01/05/2025 11:00

all of these
asda mostly
tesco secondly
waitrose certain things
lidl when passing
sainsbury when passing
coop evening pop in

ElizaMulvil · 01/05/2025 11:15

Coops - 2 in walking distance - v clean, good quality, ethical standards and own brand very cheap.
Aldi match on range of more commonly sold goods, excellent members' deals.
Support local foodbank and a range of other local groups for children, OAPs etc. you can choose from.
1.2 million extra members in last year unsurprisingly.

CraftyNavySeal · 01/05/2025 11:15

Lidl weekly, Sainsburys monthly for the stuff we can’t get in Lidl, M&S when I’m feeling fancy

TheeNotoriousPIG · 01/05/2025 11:21

Tesco and a little Co-Op are the only supermarkets in the nearest town. It's a drive to get to them as it is (I live rurally), so I'm not going to go much further on a weeknight!

If I'm in the nearest (small) city, I might pop into Morrisons for the fish counter and clothes, or Sainsbury's (it's huge and goes on forever...), but I give ALDI a wide berth. Every ALDI that I've ever been in is rammed and it gets a bit much. I always breathe a sigh of relief when I'm on my way home and the world goes back to being full of sheep and fields!

As for online food shopping, we're limited because a lot of supermarkets don't deliver out to the sticks! Nor do takeaways (except for the one where you have to book the day after off in advance, because it has a reputation for causing dodgy stomachs), which keeps us a bit richer and healthier, I suppose...

CoodleMoodle · 01/05/2025 12:02

Iceland, Lidl and Sainsbury's. Or I did, then our Iceland closed down last year so they could expand the Lidl (next door), and the new Lidl hasn't opened yet. So just Sainsbury's at the moment, but I'm looking forward to going back to Lidl. Sometimes I go to Aldi, Asda or Tesco but never a full shop. And we have a Co-op around the corner for emergencies.

DM went to Tesco all my childhood but when DH and I went to uni the only supermarket nearby was Sainsbury's, and we've stuck with it ever since. We've got a lot of Nectar points!

PaintStation · 01/05/2025 12:39

I’m not loyal to any supermarket in particular.

I shop regularly in Aldi, Morrisons, Asda and Sainsbury’s. If I’m in town, I’ll pick a few bits up from M&S.

I like Aldi for certain things, it’s probably the most interesting in terms of what they offer. The Burrata cheese is a recent find. It’s very, very good.

Asda is my least favourite but it’s convenient so I still shop there.

Oganesson118 · 01/05/2025 12:48

Tesco or Sainburys for a big shop. There's an Asda a bit nearer so I pop in there for bits for convenience sake.

DH has decided he likes Aldi and Lidl recently but I think Lidl is a faff to get to and Aldi has the worst car park in town.

okydokethen · 01/05/2025 12:59

Sainsbury’s and Lidl.

TheWiseGoose · 01/05/2025 13:02

Sainsbury's, M&S, and occasionally Morrison. I like Aldi and Lidl but not a big fan. They are too small for me.

Laundryblue · 01/05/2025 13:07

We only have Sainsbury's in our small town. Other supermarkets 10+ miles away.

tobee · 01/05/2025 13:15

Tesco delivery by default because they were the only supermarket who gave us priority delivery slots during the pandemic as Dh of extremely clinically vulnerable. Despite all the rest claiming they would.🙄

For in store I use Waitrose and M&S Food mainly but we have most of them nearby so it depends what I need and what's in stock.

purdypuma · 01/05/2025 13:19

Aldi the majority of the time even though it's five minutes further than Lidl in my town. I find the fruit & veg lasts longer from Aldi plus I love their crisps & chocolate! Occasionally local big Tesco & M&S If I'm feeling flush. TBH I like how quickly I can get round Aldi even on Saturdays. Also home bargains on a regular basis for bits & the company shop about once a month.

Used to love Morrisons but their stores have gone rapidly downhill in recent times which i find quite sad.

Nsky62 · 01/05/2025 13:33

Mainly Lidl, don’t drive, find them ok for most stuff, their fruit and veg, has a freshness guarantee , mine small but good.
Use butcher bits of meat, don’t spend much tho, I buy mainly eco cleaning stuff in bulk, or use health food shop ,I stick largely to my favoured brand.
Sometimes order from Tesco online, found I wasn’t planning well, and some of it overpriced, so with limited energy, thanks to Parkinson’s, I do it every few days.
Cat food from Aldi, my friend picks it up as not local, some stuff I do order online, not keen on Amazon

Nsky62 · 01/05/2025 13:35

VegQueen · 01/05/2025 09:15

I go to Aldi first to buy as much as I can (<10 min cycle) and then get a few bits from a small international supermarket next to it (garlic, chillies, herbs are all better quality and without plastic) then pop to Waitrose which I pass on the way home to get anything I can’t find in Aldi or for certain things I prefer from there. Sounds like a lot going to 3 shops but takes me less than an hour to do it all as they’re close together.

I also sometimes go to Tesco (I pass on the way back from the tube so it’s convenient but I don’t like it that much), Indian, Japanese and Iranian supermarkets, Italian deli, an organic shop depending on what I need. All are nearby so I walk/cycle. I very rarely go in the car to go shopping only if I was buying lots of bulky/heavy stuff at once or just for convenience on my way home from somewhere in the car.

We get bread from the bakers and milk delivered from milk and more. I don’t like online food shopping and honestly find it less mental effort to go shopping than manage the online order.

I found milk and more, milk often off, deliveries not great, I tried, it failed.

spicemaiden · 01/05/2025 13:36

Big home bargains fan, then Aldi/Lidl (for theif 1.50 8am fruit and veg boxes.

spicemaiden · 01/05/2025 13:38

And Farm foods.

Itsjustsodepressing · 01/05/2025 13:46

What an interesting thread this is OP.

A simple question but fascinating answers.

MrsCravensworth · 01/05/2025 09:28

I've tried Aldi and Lidl in the past, I can't get excited about them - they both have a horrible shopping 'atmosphere' and I don't find the prices that good either. They sell a lot of crap I don't buy anyway.

@OlderYearsIsBest I know what you mean. The Aldi by me feels like the dementors are circling round it. There’s usually always a fight breaking out, inside or in the car park too (yes, I live in a shithole).

I used to think like that! First tried Lidl in 2010, when it was heavy snow, just cautious about walking further into town.
Now my walking, and tremors with Parkinson’s, makes large supermarkets tough, my local Lidl is great, ranges much improved over the years, staff lovely, a nearby Sainsburys if I need it.
Another town about 4 miles away, has a m & s, and a waitrose, handy to a bus stop, and live near one too.

TranceNation · 01/05/2025 13:50

Aldi for general grocery shop. I know exactly what I'm getting, what I can cook with it, and where to find it on the aisles. Sainsbury's at weekends for treats but that's because it's near to us. Would use Waitrose or M&S for the same treats if they were us instead of a Sainsbury's.

bigknitblanket · 01/05/2025 13:59

Tesco and Lidl. I like a lot of things in Lidl but there’s always something I can’t get so I go to both (they’re both walkable from home)
I generally prefer Tesco as a shop but they’ve really annoyed me the last couple of years by taking some of their own branded stuff off the shelves, leaving a choice of several much more expensive brands. I don’t understand why they do that to customers (it’s not a supply issue as the products are available at other tesco stores)

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 01/05/2025 14:02

Aldi and Booths, usually both in the same trip (they are handily right next to each other!).

Augustus40 · 01/05/2025 14:15

I go religiously to Home Bargains then Asda every week. I wd prefer Tescos but too pricey for me.

I did a £40 online shop of Waitrose the other week and was very underwhelmed by their own brand tea bags and soya milk. Ds did not like the taste of their orange juice either. We were both surprised at this. They used to be really good years ago.

uncomfortablydumb60 · 01/05/2025 14:37

Sainsbury’s for essentials as it’s 2 minutes away, Asda for weekly shop( rollback prices save a bit) and Aldi for the rest
I live in a small town in Wiltshire which has more supermarkets than the nearest city( Bath)
