Which supermarket/s do you shop in?

Thrilling thread, I know Grin

We have a Lidl at the bottom of our road but we don’t like it, never enjoyed their own brand stuff and their fruit and veg goes off really fast (in our store). Instead, we drive to Aldi which we love Grin in our town but not really walkable with shopping. If we need branded stuff then we pop to our local Tesco, again a drive but local. We also pick up snacks in Home Bargains. Where do you buy your shopping?Smile

Waitrose, Sainsburys, Lidl and Aldi. Probably Sainsburys most frequently as it's the nearest. Deliveries only from Waitrose but I only have one about every month to 6 weeks.

I go out of my way to avoid Asda, Morrisons and Tesco - have them all nearby and could go, but choose not to.

Denimwondersuit · 01/05/2025 08:24

Waitrose at the moment, don’t come at me! I live in central London and it’s the only supermarket near me. Occasionally Lidl, if I pop in that direction, but it’s over 30 mins walk away. Do have a sainsburys local and small tesco, but they work out to be more expensive than Waitrose on most items. However, I don’t eat at home all too much and mostly have meals at work. I’m sure it’d be different otherwise.

MiddleAgedDread · 01/05/2025 08:25

Aldi, Morrisons or Sainsburys
odd bits from Waitrose if passing

TigerRag · 01/05/2025 08:26

Aldi, Lidl and Iceland. Very occasionally Tesco and the Co Op

Itsjustsodepressing · 01/05/2025 08:27

We only have a Morrisons in our town.
But I'm not very keen on it so only use it occasionally for odd things.

I don't have a car but there are 2 fair sized Sainsbury's accessible by a shortish bus ride - one in each direction.

In fact there is the full range of supermarkets accessible a shortish bus ride away , apart from there is no Waitrose.

But I'm a Sainsbury's shopper and go about 3 times a week as I can't carry too much at a time.

sunshineandshowers40 · 01/05/2025 08:27

Sainsbury's deliver because Tesco annoyed me a few years ago. Will get top ups from Tesco, Waitrose or Lidl.

Sesma · 01/05/2025 08:28

Waitrose and M&S, which are about a mile away, nearest is Asda which I don't like but use as a corner shop.

Online, I haven't a pass at the moment so whichever give me an offer, this week it's Ocado.

hairyunicorn · 01/05/2025 08:29

M&S, when i used to live alone... heaven and reasonably priced when shopping or 1. Now that my son has moved back in with me, I shop at Tesco's.

That kid would eat all my M&S food in 1 day.... I miss it :(

Itsjustsodepressing · 01/05/2025 08:41

Slightly off topic but I've never used online shopping because I like to get to look at best by dates and choose the freshest fruit and veg.

When in store I often see the staff going round collecting the goods for online shoppers and it really puts me off when I see then just grabbing the items and not looking at dates or checking for freshness.

I just wondered if people who use online shopping feel that whilst they get the convenience of getting the stuff delivered they lose out on the quality of the goods?

Bodonka · 01/05/2025 08:43

We do an Ocado every few weeks, try and top up Fruit & Veg from M&S because I prefer it from there. Then little Tesco is our local for top ups. Love budgens for the quirkiness of items and have a few firm favourites there. Enjoy ASDA near the holidays (Easter and Christmas) as tends to have a load of branded stuff I can’t find anywhere else. Love farm shops for a mooch but too expensive/sporadically available ingredients to go often - I’m glad Daylesford isn’t closer as I’m sure I’d give up my own ‘fun spending money’ to make it my regular 😂. Local Aldi/Lidl are always chocka but I’ll pop in occasionally, again near Christmas to pick up more unique bits. Rotate between Morrisons/Coop/Sainsbury’s on Deliveroo/UberEats if there’s a significant discount and I’m short on time.

Basically, grocery shopping is my passion and I spend far too much time popping here there and everywhere for an item or two 😏

pinkbonbons · 01/05/2025 08:44

I’m the same @Itsjustsodepressing

Although I get online shops, I usually get my fruit and veg from the actual shop, online shopping is handy for the cupboard, frozen and bulky stuff. I am often on foot so don't carry much

I find Ocado dates better than other supermarkets I’ve tried, but I still only plan to have the fruit/veg a few days and mainly use it for cupboard staples which I then top up with smaller in person shops.

Doggymummar · 01/05/2025 08:52

Not been to a supermarket in donkeys. We use Ocado as they price match Tesco, and Tesco price match Aldi, it Lidl I forget. Also use Amazon for quite a bit, Nescafé, toilet roll. Wash powder etc all well priced.

We are not a fruit and veg eating house so this isn't a concern. The dairy always had about 10 days on it and the app tells you what the dates will be like. Also they have yellow sticker items that might be short sated, but then tell you that too.n

LadyKenya · 01/05/2025 08:56

Sainsbury's, M&S, and occasionally Waitrose. There is also a Tesco, and Aldi not too far from where I live, but I do not seem to have much success with the fresh produce there.

Meadowfinch · 01/05/2025 09:00

Tesco Extra, about 5 miles away. There is a small Lidl at the same place but it's expensive and poor quality. Sainsbury is 6 miles, Waitrose is 8 miles.

I shop in person, I like my fruit & veg fresh too

Sesma · 01/05/2025 09:03

I also use Amazon a lot for laundry, cleaning, toilet rolls and large packs of drinks

MrsCravensworth · 01/05/2025 09:07

Aldi and Lidl, cos we’re poor.

Although, god bless Aldi. I’m coeliac and I haven’t eaten bread for years, as I can’t afford normal supermarket prices for a miniature loaf of over processed, full of shit, gluten free bread that goes off as soon as you look at it. Over £3 for about 10 slices of tasteless, chemical laden crap is daylight robbery.

But Aldi now do a GF loaf for £1.50. So now, if I ever want the odd “treat” of tasteless, chemical filled crap so I can have egg and soldiers, I can.

We live a two min drive/less than 10 min walk from Aldi, so dh mainly does tiny shops every other day as I do find that especially mince, goes off well before the use by date.

Mumofyellows · 01/05/2025 09:09

Tesco is my main go to, with top ups in Waitrose and Asda if need be.
I like Aldi but it's a pain to get to so rarely go.

Samslaundry · 01/05/2025 09:10

Morrisons. The only supermarket that reduces right down. I got some haddock reduced from £5 to 50p the other day and every time I go in there there's similar. Most days if you go at 6 there's loads of stuff for 5p I don't see any other supermarket doing that. Plus meat and veg seem fresher than everywhere else.

slavetothekittens · 01/05/2025 09:11

Ocado for a big shop every month, then Waitrose for top ups as it's the nearest supermarket. Sainsbury's now and then but it's further away. Lidl occasionally. Used to shop more at M&S and Tesco, but the bus was axed so can't get there anymore.
Love Aldi but the nearest one is miles away so that's an occasional treat nowadays as it's more on the lines of a day out than just going for a shop.

SilverButton · 01/05/2025 09:11

Sainsbury's

LittleLlama · 01/05/2025 09:11

We mostly shop at Lidl. Love their bakery. We sometimes go to Morrisons for meat. We buy toilet rolls, kitchen wipes, etc. from Amazon in bulk on their subscription service.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 01/05/2025 09:12

Différent shops for different things!
Waitrose for wine, tea, tuna, sardines ( will get top up and oooo impulse stuff) oh and the Isle of Wight tomatoes, hurrah they are back !

Aldi for the midweek can’t be bothered to go further ( but prefer their yogurt, croissants, muesli and French cheese, also their Christmas biscuits and cake)

Tesco for tins, packets , frozen, Stilton, Whiskey and Gin often on promo, Polish sausages, Indian snacks, filter coffee, 85 % chocolate. The only supermarket that sells longlife tomato juice which I drink every day.

Havent set foot in Sainsbury for years though it is equidistant to Tesco. More expensive and always campaigning for some weird cause, whilst apparently despising and distrusting their customers.

but we have a brillant fish and meat wholesaler who also does retail, and they have vegetables and fruit too now, so that is our every single week place.
