Why are flies so stupid?

Surely by now the evolutionary advantage of not coming in to houses, getting trapped, flinging themselves against windows (without ever finding the open part) and ultimately being swatted should have produced flies that stay outside minding their own business? Five minutes my door has been open and sure enough there is a fly in the house pointlessly flying round.

Moths are just as bad.
"Oh look at this bright light"
bzzz
"Oh I've burnt my wings.......but oh look at this bright light"
bzzz
And repeat........😂

I know this is light hearted but flies are amazing. Brilliant decomposters and pollinators. Along with moths they are crucial in the ecosystem.

KnickerFolder · 29/04/2025 16:38

They aren’t that stupid, just conflicted 😂 They move towards tasty things to eat that they can smell inside the house but they are also attracted to light and move towards that because nasty predators lurk in the dark.

True, but they're much more effective at that when they're not head butting my living room window from the inside when there's an open door a few feet away.

Buzzy bastards. Time to mobilise the citronella tea lights.

I know it’s germs I’m meant to be concerned about, but tbh I could overlook it if they’d just stop buzzing so loudly. HI IM FLYING FRANTICALLY ROUND YOUR KITCHEN HAVE YOU HEARD
I’ve just got the kids to clear off outside, I don’t need the noise replacing.

MyLegoHair · 29/04/2025 16:44

A little one, with the whole world to fly in, flew into my mouth on the school run earlier. No messing around straight to the back of my tongue. I'm not the most elegant creature at the best of times, but coughing and drooling outside of the school didn't improve the situation 🙄
Little pricks.

They are total exhibitionists. Main character syndrome writ large.

Damnloginpopup · 29/04/2025 16:47

Should rename them to Buzzes.

Or cunts.

AcquadiP · 29/04/2025 16:55

I hear you. I cannot stand the bloody things but am loathe to kill them and would prefer them simply to leave. One managed to get into my car the other day via one open window. To maximise its chances of escaping, I drove 4.5 miles with all four windows fully open. I arrived at my destination, turned off the engine and heard that unmistakable buzzzzzing noise. Then, it flew out. They're thick!

Chemenger · 29/04/2025 19:22

I’ve just gone into a room that has had doors and windows shut all day. The fly has come with me, it managed to find the door while I was going through it yet it could not find two open doors and several open windows that would have let it escape in three hours.
