I'm feeling quite down lately and been thinking I'd like to re visit some of the books I loved as a child. At the moment I want to read...

Enid Blyton:

Adventure series, starting with The Island of Adventure.
St Clares series
Mystery series starting with The Burnt Cottage.

Patricia St John:

Treasures of the snow
The Tanglewoods Secret

Jill Murphy:

The Worst Witch

Just wondered if anyone else is re - reading old books?

Oh yes - loved Malcolm Saville! In fact I loved them so much I used to take them all on holiday with me as a kid. I didn’t have quite all of them - they were hard to find even then - but luckily a friend up the road also collected them so we swapped back and forth. I remember years later FINALLY managing to get hold of a copy of Not Scarlet but Gold which I had never read and being ecstatic!

I used to write to him and he always wrote back in his spider writing. He kept me sane during my crap childhood. I thought I was the only one he wrote Tom apparently he answered hundreds of children.

Mallory towers and all the twins at St Clares books
Anne of Green Gables
Jill & the perfect Pony
Any Roald Dahl books
The Secret Garden
The Silver Sword
Ballet Shoes
The Magic Faraway Tree
Jane Eyre
The Phantom Tolbooth

ChompinCrocodiles · 27/04/2025 18:18

Oh, the Silver Brumby books!

There was an (Australian?) cartoon my younger sister watched about the Silver Brumby that sucked me in as a teen. Then my mum found out there were books and I read them all. Haven't thought about them for years.

UnctuousUnicorns · 27/04/2025 18:19

Yes to Mrs Pepperpot and Trebizon. I also read FF, SS, MT, SC, CS books.

I preferred White Boots to Ballet Shoes but loved the Gemma and Sisters books even more and they’re another series that have been out of print for years.

Loved the Gemma books and Thursdays Child has to be my favourite book ever.

UnctuousUnicorns · 27/04/2025 18:21

I should also reread Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator again. Very strange book.

Oh wow, how wondrful! I don’t think it ever even occurred to me to write to my favourite authors.

I read all the Narnia books last year. I hadn't read them since I was about 13.

I was fascinated at just how much religion/how many bible references are in them. It went totally over my head the first time round and I just thought they were just nice stories and an easy read (and possibly a bit young for me).

I loved the Narnia books growing up - right up until I read The Last Battle. The sense of betrayal I felt when I realised it was all Christian propoganda in the end was huge. Ruined them forever for me.

How funny that you should say this, as I just started re-reading the Magic Faraway Tree books today by Enid Blyton.

It’s bringing back amazing memories!!! And I’ve been reading my Point Romance books when I visit my parents 😂

I loved the Jill series!

I read all the Saddle Club, although totally different to Jill of course. I think Jill was written in the 1950s?

I think they must have been thinking back. A lot of the men were called Captain or Major - from fighting in the war I guess.

squashyhat · 27/04/2025 18:57

I'm lucky enough to have inherited all the Arthur Ransome books from my Mum (or rather I leant on her heavily when she was alive to leave them to me 😊) and I love them. They are my go-to comfort reading.

Talisin · 27/04/2025 19:06

I have a link to ebook versions of all the Lone Pine books. Definitely not official but they’re all out of print now otherwise. Anyway if anyone wants them, give me a pm.

I like Point Romance but Point Horror was more my thing. Definitely not a horror fan now though!

Room 13..,anyone know this? It was about a school trip to Whitby, and one of the point horror book series that I loved!

Jacqueline Wilson has written a couple of 'up to date' Faraway Tree books - they are my guilty listening pleasure on Audible when I've had a crap day or when I'm lying sleepless at night. They are very sweet and amusing.

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 27/04/2025 19:38

I loved the Faraway tree stories..I used to pretend that I was Silky as I had long blonde hair and was very petite.

point horror! I’ll have to dig those out next.

whatwasthatnoise · 27/04/2025 20:39

I'm working my way through Roald Dahl's back catalogue. I finished Danny the Champion of the World last night, it was more lovely than I remember. This year I've read The Twits, James and the Giant Peach, Boy and Going Solo. Last year I discovered The Automatic Grammatiztor, a collection of short stories written for teens, it was really good. I must have been on to reading Sweet Valley High rather than RD as a teen.
I don't sleep well so it's good to have easy to read books to work through at 2am 😴
I'm going to add Narnia to my reading list! Thanks for the suggestion.

All the Famous Five
Silver Snaffles
The Heron Ride

But most of all the Lone Pine series by Malcolm Saville, they are now rare and expensive so cannot re read them.

I was lusting after these during a bout of long covid and found Not Scarlet But Gold on Abebooks. It was SO disappointing, story was short and dull, it was just blah.
I was gutted! I adored the will they yes but when with David and Peter when I was 14, 15.

Katieweasel · 27/04/2025 21:06

Homecoming by Cynthia Voigt

Moier · 27/04/2025 21:43

Milly Molly Mandy.
The Family from one end street.
The Water babies.

StormCloud52 · 27/04/2025 21:44

I am currently listening to the Philosopher’s Stone on my runs. It is as magic as it was the first time I read it at 11.

Linnet · 27/04/2025 22:02

I regularly re read,

Milly Molly Mandy
Tom’s midnight garden
The Children of Green Knowe
The adventure series by Enid Blyton,The Circus of adventure is my favourite.
Mr Galliano’s Circus
The famous Five, I’m working my way through those in between other books
I’ll also dip in and out of Roald Dahl books
I also have some Point Horror books that I plan to re read at some point

ipredictariot5 · 27/04/2025 22:07

Gobbolino the Witches Cat still is my favourite book. None of my children were interested so I plan to read it endlessly to any grandchildren

CrystalSingerFan · 27/04/2025 22:12

AgnesX · 27/04/2025 12:17

The Little House on the Prairie series, as though as an adult I'm not sure I could.

Ooh, one of my favourite comfort re-reads. So interesting about the material culture, never mind the emotional relationships. How to make a planked door, without hinges. She's such an interesting writer.

Why are you reluctant to re-read?
