I'm feeling quite down lately and been thinking I'd like to re visit some of the books I loved as a child. At the moment I want to read...

Enid Blyton:

Adventure series, starting with The Island of Adventure.
St Clares series
Mystery series starting with The Burnt Cottage.

Patricia St John:

Treasures of the snow
The Tanglewoods Secret

Jill Murphy:

The Worst Witch

Just wondered if anyone else is re - reading old books?

Even more disturbing when you know that DWJ based it on her own childhood which was completely messed up!

The Dalemark Quartet of hers is absolutely epic.

She also wrote books for older audiences like Deep Secret and Hexwood which are good.

Oh gosh really! I didn't know. I will look that up.

Swiss Family Robinson, all the adventure books (Island of adventure etc), the second version of Land of Green Ginger - now banned for being politically incorrect, but it was hilarious. The Log of the Ark, My family and other animals.

I love rereading children's books. It's like re-meeting old friends. My choices:

Enid Blyton: Pretty much any, but especially Adventure series. First Choice: Castle of Adventure

Malcolm Saville: Lone Pine, Buckingham, Nettleford series. First Choice: Wings over Witchend

Monica Edwards: Punchbowl or Wrestling series. First Choice: Storm Ahead or The White Riders

Violet Needham: Not so keen on her non series. First choice: The House of the Paladin

Antonia Forest: I prefer her non-school ones. First Choice: Either her historical set The Players Boy/The Players and the Rebels or The Marlows and the Traitor

Geoffrey Trease: Great books. First Choice: Cue for Treason

Arthur Ransome: Prefer the Swallows and Amazon set. First Choice: Winter Holiday

Elinor Brent Dyer: Haven't got many outside the Chalet School. First Choice: The Princess of the Chalet School

Noel Streatfield: Love lots of hers. First Choice: Party Frock

Diane Wynne Jones: Great set again. Time of the Ghost is very creepy. I only read it as an adult though. First Choice: Power of Three

Pamela Brown: Don't like Maddie Alone but the others are great. Her non-series ones aren't as good either. First Choice: The Swish of the Curtain

Joan Aiken: Love the Dido set, but my favourite were the Saddle the Sea set. First Choice: Bridle the Wind

Elizabeth Gouge: I was absolutely over the moon to discover Island Magic on Kindle the other day. I have the other in that series. All of hers are wonderful. First Choice: Smokey House

CS Lewis: Obviously the Narnia set. First Choice: The Horse and His Boy

I could continue all day.

Shadow the sheepdog

Fans of pony books, especially the Jill Books - have a look at the Jane Badger Books website, you'll be in for a treat!

I steer my kids towards my favourites for our shared reading. Currently working our way through the Worst Witch series with my 6 year old. She loves it as much as I did at that age. She now wants a tabby cat (and a broomstick capable of flight!).
Enid Blyton got both my kids into reading. At one point I think dc1 and I knew all the words to the Wishing Tree books. I love Diana Wynne Jones and reread The Pinhoe Egg recently.
Tom's midnight garden is dc1's current favourite book.
Joan Aiken's The Serial Garden is perhaps my favourite though. I absolutely adored the Armstrong family as a child and on re-reading the copy I bought for dc1, it was still fabulous.

I re read Stig if the Dump a while ago. Such a lovely story! Also What Katy did abd The Amazing Mr Blundle. Nothing like a childhood favourite to bring back memories!

MaryGreenhill · 27/04/2025 14:07

Inextremis · 27/04/2025 14:10

What Katy Did
What Katie Did Next
The Silver Brumby

I quite frequently re-read all of the Anne of Green Gables collection, in fact I've just finished Rilla of Ingleside for the gazillionth time. As a kid, they were wonderful and in my 50s I still love them. I also loved Nancy Drew, Malory Towers, Sweet Valley High amongst many others.

Topseyt123 · 27/04/2025 14:15

I've recently re-read the entire Chronicles of Narnia series by C S Lewis on my Kobo. Loved it.

I've also re-read a couple of Alan Garner ones The Weirdstone of Brisingamen and Elidor. Loved those too, and I am convinced that I understood more and got more out of them as an adult than I did as a child (though I loved them then too).

MissMarplesNiece · 27/04/2025 14:29

When I was ill in hospital my sister bought me an omnibus edition of Famous Five books. It was perfect reading for hospital.

I was pony mad when I was a young teenager and I often reread the books I enjoyed then - Pullein-Thompson sisters, Judith Berrisford etc.

I'd like to reread What Katy Did.

Havetoagree · 27/04/2025 14:32

I still have all mine and love rereading them. Recently I’ve read Anne of Green Gables, a Little Princess and the Little House on the Prarie books…

almostbloody50 · 27/04/2025 14:35

Oh there’s a book about a rag doll called Annie.. and I have some vague recollection there was a camel in the book as well. Maybe I should track that down and go back to being about 8 years old.. I wonder if I will remember the story if I start?

Recently watched BBC’s famous five - quite good actually but there was a lot of creative license. But would like to re read famous Five

jennygeddes · 27/04/2025 15:02

Still love and reread the Anne of Green Gables series.
Little Lord Fauntleroy, Little Princess, Secret Garden.
Reread Tom's Midnight Garden a few years ago after trying and failing to get my daughter to read it.
Malory Towers and the Adventure series.
Started reading Georgette Heyer and Alistair Maclean as a young teen. Also still great comfort reading.

LadyMacbethssweetArabianhand · 27/04/2025 15:03

Chalet school series. My favourite was The Chalet School in Exile.
Every Enid Blyton book.
Rumer Godden
I liked Malcolm Saville too.
Ballet Shoes
A really dated book called Sally's Family
Veronica of the Wells/A Dream of Saddler Wells
The High House

RanchRat · 27/04/2025 15:15

Antonia forest books. Everyone an absolute treasure.

AudiobookListener · 27/04/2025 15:24

I think I've already reread all my childhood favourites.

No 1 is Little Katia by EM Almedingen.

Tom's Midnight Garden
Charlotte Sometimes
The Wind in the Willows
Island of the Blue Dolphins
A Kestrel for a Knave
Diary of a Young Girl
Swallows and Amazons
The Children of the New Forest
Heidi

And uncountably many books for adults, many of which I would never read for comfort now. But I get that nostalgic comfort feeling when I read/listen to Jane Eyre, Robinson Crusoe, Lorna Doone, Ring of Bright Water (and weirdly Day of the Triffids which reminds me of the holiday location where I first read it!)

HonoriaBulstrode · 27/04/2025 15:43

Is everyone aware of how many of the books mentioned are available for free on Faded Page?

I was coming to say Faded Page. They're working on getting the Chalet School up there - currently complete up to no. 38, Excitements, with a few isolated titles after that. Strongly recommend reading them in order, at least up to no. 18, Gay.

I loved the Lone Pine books as a child, but couldn't get into them when I tried re-reading recently.

I still re-read some Blyton, Ransome, Narnia and other favourites.

Itisallgoingtobeok · 27/04/2025 16:11

Lots of wonderful books listed. Did anyone else love the Trebizon series by Anne Digby? I also love the Dark is Rising Sequence by Susan Cooper.

TrickyD · 27/04/2025 16:33

All the Arthur Ransome books, Winter Holiday the favourite
Elizabeth Goudge; best ones Little White Horse and City of Bells.
Nice to see Violet Needham mentioned; I love them all except The Boy in Red.
Chalet School, I have a lot of them but I was never very keen on Enid B.

Now off to investigate Faded Page.
