I'm feeling quite down lately and been thinking I'd like to re visit some of the books I loved as a child. At the moment I want to read...

Enid Blyton:

Adventure series, starting with The Island of Adventure.
St Clares series
Mystery series starting with The Burnt Cottage.

Patricia St John:

Treasures of the snow
The Tanglewoods Secret

Jill Murphy:

The Worst Witch

Just wondered if anyone else is re - reading old books?

Chalet school series. My favourite was The Chalet School in Exile.
Every Enid Blyton book.
Rumer Godden
I liked Malcolm Saville too.
Ballet Shoes
A really dated book called Sally's Family
Veronica of the Wells/A Dream of Saddler Wells
The High House

I'd forgotten about Ballet Shoes. I can't remember much about it even now but I definitely liked it as a child.

All of the lovely pony books - especially the Jill series. I sometimes buy the odd book that I enjoyed as a child and re-read it - Silver Snaffles was my last purchase, and The Little White Horse.

I'm still looking for a copy of The Amazing Mr Whisper or The Return of Mr Whisper - I loved those books so much and haven't managed to find any copies since I used to borrow them repeatedly from the library.

Oh, and anything by Rosemary Sutcliffe - The Eagle of the Ninth being a firm favourite. Might have to go and buy a copy of that now...

WonderingWanda · 27/04/2025 17:01

The ones which stick in my memory are
Swallows and Amazon's
The chronicals of Narnia
Mallory Towers
Famous Five
Maybe the Judy Blume books, although reading those again as an adult might ruin them.
Then trashy Point Horror books as a teen but I doubt they have stood the test of time at all.

Ilovemyshed · 27/04/2025 17:02

Mrs Pepperpot
Gobbolino the Witches Cat

I'd forgotten about Ballet Shoes. I can't remember much about it even now but I definitely liked it as a child.

I preferred White Boots to Ballet Shoes but loved the Gemma and Sisters books even more and they’re another series that have been out of print for years.

Our teacher read The Ship That Flew to us when I was 8. I always loved it and bought my own copy.

I also loved The Wool Pack and wore out my first copy so have now bought it again.

Have regularly re-read the Narnia Chronicles over the years and definitely love discovering Eva Ibbotson books that I missed growing up. The Wind in the Willows is a particular favourite & have a real soft spot for Mole. At junior school I discovered George McDonald and loved At the back of the North Wind and the Princess and Curdie - (which meant salmon coloured geraniums & heliotrope are always in my garden.). Also enjoyed What Katy Did & what Katy did Next along with Heidi.
Rosemary Sutcliffe and the Eagle of the Ninth series helped to inspire me to study history and then I fell in love with Mary Renault's books - the King must Die, Fire from Heaven & the Persian boy which I still return to from time to time only now I can enjoy the research behind them as well as the story.
My sisters were a lot older and I managed to read all the James Bond books as they bought them, not really suitable for a child but I loved them anyway.

I recently reread the St. Clares series. It’s wonderful! I had bought the set again but they’ve modernised it as well as adding in two newly written books, which don’t capture the spirit at all. So I tracked down the original print I had in the 80s, so much better!

Werp · 27/04/2025 17:43

The Owl Service by Alan Garner was the first time I enjoyed reading something spooky and I love an occasional reread

RaraRachael · 27/04/2025 17:46

I read The Owl Servicd and pretended I understood it then watched it on TV and wasn't any more enlightened.
I kept all my childhood books. Just looked through them and found The Way to Sattin Shore by Philippa Pearce which I remember being really atmospheric.
I never had the Famous Five but loved the Secret Seven

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 27/04/2025 17:48

I read the worst witch to dd - the 3 books I had. Was delighted to discover there are new books in the series!

stayathomer · 27/04/2025 17:50

Hugs to everyone rereading pony books! Just to let ye know an author continued the Jill books- don’t have the battery to find the author but I’ve a few of them on my kindle- haven’t started them yet, think am going to save them for eg a holiday. Also have to reread Eventing by Pippa Funnell and black beauty and star dancer (battery going but have to add too scared to reread Mallory towers- what if I don’t like them?!)

CatsLikeBoxes · 27/04/2025 17:50

Carbonel the Witch's Cat
Trebizon books
Violet Needham
House of the Paladin and Woods of Windri
The Winter of Enchantment
Alan Garner especially Weird stone of Brisingamen & Moon of Gomrath
When Marnie Was There
Marianne Dreams
Charlotte Sometimes

The Lone Pine books & also the Marston Baines ones
Chalet School
Noel Streatfeild - really liked White Boots, Tennis Shoes and the Gemma books.

So many more!

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 27/04/2025 17:53

I'm going to work my way through people's favourites that I've never read on top of my own! Thanks everyone

Anyone mention Beverley Nichols yet? I adored the Tree That Sat Down, The Stream That Stood Still and The Mountain of Magic.

LadyAddle · 27/04/2025 17:58

@Vroomfondleswaistcoat I adored Mr Whisper too - the mystery and sense of strangeness really haunted me. They’re like hen’s teeth to find - do you live near a National Library?

UnctuousUnicorns · 27/04/2025 17:58

I did buy copies of Grump And The Hairy Mammoth and Miss Happiness and Miss Flower and read them again. Also fond memories of the Ramona The Pest, and Conan Doyle's Nigel and Brigadier Gerard books, as well as anything by E. Nesbitt. The Secret Garden too.

Sadly no, I'm nowhere near anywhere I could borrow one, I've checked! And I wouldn't want to give it back. But I'm delighted that someone else knows what I'm talking about - weren't they wonderfully atmospheric! I remember him calling the ponies off the moor and the children riding them.

Charlotte sometimes by Penelope Farmer is still a very good read.

Zara by Joyce Stranger is another great read

When Marnie was there was the first book that I remember reading and being spooked!

I'm always rereading all the Anne of Green Gables books and I recently reread another series by the same author, the Emily series. I loved Emily as a child and I loved her even more reading again.
I also reread the first couple of the 12th of July series by Joan Lingard and all the Maggie books. I loved (and still love) a strong female character. Maggie is a wonderful role model.

MargaretThursday · 27/04/2025 18:12

Also by LM Montgomery The Blue Castle is a lovely book

I bought Charlotte Sometimes recently as I wanted to read it; I hadn't before. It's a very strange but good book.

Jinny series of horse novels by Patricia Leitch

ChompinCrocodiles · 27/04/2025 18:15

I read all the Narnia books last year. I hadn't read them since I was about 13.

I was fascinated at just how much religion/how many bible references are in them. It went totally over my head the first time round and I just thought they were just nice stories and an easy read (and possibly a bit young for me).
