When do you cut hair?

How do you know when you’re due to cut hair? Both for adults and children?

DD is 2 and born with loads of hair, it’s just kept growing and now nearly to her bum. She’s easy with brushing, washing, and putting plaits in, etc. I notice there are beginning to be more loose strands round the crown, does that mean I should cut it? Most toddlers have short hair, fringe, a sort of bob. Is this just all based on parental preference at this age?

I think it’s probably based on practicality that most toddlers have shorter hair! Most hate it being washed or brushed and a lot don’t have the rate of growth that yours clearly has.

DD has thick wavy hair. She had a bob until she was 6 as it was just a lot easier to deal with.
Her nursery friend had long straight hair, always in plaits, and it worked as well so I think it depends on the parents and the child, there is no standard approach.

I would get it trimmed though.

@reluctantbrit yhabk you, is there a general rule for when hair should be trimmed? If there start to be uneven strands flying about?

I think we started trimming around 18 months when she had enough hair to get it into shape. My hairdresser just added her for 5 minutes at the end of my appointment.

We later had a mobile hairdresser to come to our NCT playgroup, that was lot of fun and she was great with the toddlers. I think most did it every couple of months.

Most hairdressers recommend 6 weeks to avoid split ends but I think that's too much hassle and expensive. Me and my daughter would go every few months but we always get a good inch or two off. In saying that out hair doesn't need styled & it's mid length. My husband and son would need to go every 6 weeks to keep their short hair styles tidy.
