Hi, how much do you think is sensible for them?

Come in, one sachet, one scoop of biscuits, top up water. Only needs one time a day.

£20?

No, you weren't maybe one or two agreed with you but the vast majority have said that 20 is tight for a whole week

I agreed to £30. move on already.

This thread tells me a lot about why so many young people struggle in the workplace. Simultaneously useless but expecting to be paid a lot.

IKR - Apparently some posters think I should be paying him £140. But also they can't possibly be expected to commit to this HUGE commitment of spending few minutes each morning popping next door. I mean, what if they wanted to stay at a mates house for a few days? Who could he possibly ask to cover for him? He obviously lives alone, without siblings or parents to cover for him...

I posted earlier to say I paid £12 per day for two visits. By a great feat of mathematics I worked out that is £84 per week. The cat knows our very kind and reliable feeder. I think that is a reasonable price for peace of mind. Not sure if I would feel happy about leaving Miss Cat with a 14 year old neighbour or paying young neighbour £84.

Unicornsparkleshine · 28/04/2025 11:52

I would give £50

I think this thread needs to go into 'classics'.

You've shown remarkable restraint OP.

that's a bit tight and exploitative don't you think? Surely you mean £50 a day...

No, I would pay £50 for the week..

koolkatdad · 28/04/2025 13:32

Haha We look after our neighbours cat when she goes on holiday. I go over with my kids 2x a day and put out some food for the cat and pet him and have a little play, and let him in if it is cold depending on the time of year. We charge the princely sum of nothing. The kids love it and argue over who gets to give that cat which food. They're excited to see it eat and make quite a fuss over him. I suppose our neighbour gets the kids birthday presents, but there is no money changing hands at all. Wouldn't expect it for looking after a cat. I mean it takes 10 minutes max and probably 80% of that is the kids playing with the cat, and trying to get them to leave it alone so it can eat. £20 is more than generous enough.

wow, you're so tight and exploitative.

You should be paying him £10 per visit minimum. After all he has to open one entire sachet of food, put it in the bowl AND use a scoop for some biscuits - and that is an utterly massive responsibility for him, so you should be paying him far more than a measly £50 for the week...

So, you are going off on holiday and leaving a living creature that depends on you in the care of a 14 year old? What a hideous tightwad you are.

What is supposed to happen if the poor cat is run over but limps home/has a fight and develops an abscess that requires veterinary treatment or becomes unwell?

Way too much to expect of a 14 year old child no matter how responsible they conveniently appear to be to you.

Shame on you !

The fourteen year old lives right next door with his parents who will no doubt step in if anything difficult happens. But hopefully it will be fine.

MNTouristhere · 28/04/2025 18:47

I reckon £5 a day minimum as includes responsibility for checking and locking up your house. My teen (now 16) has been getting £5 a visits for watering plants and putting out / taking in bins for a friend for a couple of years now. She recently got £10 a day for looking after a cat - was 15 min walk away and included litter tray and 10 min play with the cat each time. She did this for 10 days and was chuffed with £100 but the friends
also brought her sweets from their trip and a cool tshit!
As other said, professional cat sitters cost loads more!

At this point, isn't it easier to take Tiddles with you?
Or book him his own spa break with a pedicure and hot towels? Grin

Cruisinforcroissant · 28/04/2025 19:33

My child gets paid £10 a day for a twice daily feed and provides excellent video updates/photos and ear scratches.

That would be ‘padicure’ 🐾

I pay cat sitter 12 pound a visit including litter, watering plants, bins out whatever other bits and bobs so 20 quid for a while week is a bit tight. No I haven't read the thread! 😂

5 days, 7 days, clean and dry bowls at least- no litter tray ?

...in any case you sound like a bit of a cheapskate - have a look at daily cattery costs to put it into some sort of perspective......

not this again.... The cat doesn't need a litter tray... the neighbour is going to do it for free ...

Well good for you.. you crack on and pay a 14 year old £168 for putting some food down once a day.

But this lad wouldn't be doing litter trays, watering plants or taking bins out or any other tasks... so ...

that's nice.

But this child only needs to do it once a day, and no scratches or videos required.
