Watching it now. I'm not religious - but it is a fascinating watch and a beautiful setting.

This is adorable ❤️😂

In my church they moved over to the Indian sign of peace ie 🙏 during the pandemic. It seems to have stuck.

It's the Brahmic way if saying hello .

The BBC insisting on calling the church St Mary Major instead of Santa Maria Maggiore is really getting on my nerves.

It makes it sound like a CofE church in the Cotswolds.

Yes, it grates doesn't it.

Trump spoiling the view in a bright blue suit.

Not a fan of Trump (at all) but bright blue is a biiit of a overstatement imo.

My Southern Italian nonna actually told me that it was considered improper for anyone but family to wear black to a funeral. Others should choose somber colours like dark grey, navy, brown etc.

wearing black would be considered disrespectful because one would thereby imply that one was mourning as deeply as those people that were closest to the departed.

Trump obviously was not observing (rural) S. Italian mourning etiquette. But it doesn’t seem that bad to me tbh.

No - Francis only has the one wooden coffin, not three.

Oh I didn’t realise he wasn’t following that tradition. Normally there’s a lead one.

Calliopespa · 26/04/2025 12:13

… for a pope.

He was always ringing people up apparently. At first a lot of people thought it was a prankster on the phone pretending to be the pope, until it became apparent that he was actually going to phone people and speak to them personally.

Didn't he phone up the people who had delivered his newspapers in Buenos Aires to cancel the order and arrange to pay his outstanding bill? I think that was on the day after he was elected and the newspaper sellers thought it was someone taking the piss.

That's really sweet.
I'm not RC, was only tuned in for curiosity sake, so don't know much about him other than what was on main stream news.
But that is sweet that he was so intouch with the people.😀

Why is it whataboutery? Obviously Charles can change things if he wants to. There wasn't something magical about the last Queen that means what she said can't be changed.

I don't think QE was magical or anything like that, but you're banging on about something which hasn't happened for which there was a protocol. Protocol is about diplomacy and not drawing attention to yourself above what is being celebrated and not insulting or upsetting anyone else. The CoE split from and competes with the Catholic Church worldwide due to the former British empire. The King turning up would be like a woman who is a wedding guest attending someone else's wedding in a wedding dress. It doesn't and won't happen unless you want to start a fight.

I think I’ve missed something here, do you think you could kindly explain that last bit? (They reminded me of the pall bearers for my father, who almost dropped the coffin before they reached the grave.)

They are the Pope’s gentlemen. So they are the lay people that helped him in the Vatican rather than professional pall bearers. They are people that will have worked with him on a daily basis or near daily basis.

ShiftySquirrel · 26/04/2025 12:15

A good farewell for a humble and popular pope. I hope the next pope will continue down the same path.

It’s closer to Royal than Navy blue. I wouldn’t describe it as sombre. It stood out - which was no doubt what he wanted.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 26/04/2025 12:15

Thank you for the explanation, @RafaistheKingofClay. So doubly stressful for them as they knew him personally.

DeanElderberry · 26/04/2025 12:15

Just had a bloke saying 'Saint Pope' and not even noticing.

That image of Zelensky and Trump - I hope that fact that Z wasn't wearing a suit might have got through to T.

I heard on a broadcast that there is at least two layers to the coffin - lead and wood (possibly a third, but I can’t recall that one).

Why did they do it? Subtitles would have been so much better so we could hear the Italian service being spoken.

Live subtitling is very challenging even just transcribing one language, let alone going between two. They probably didn't want to risk embarrassing mistakes. Automatic subtitling is way too inaccurate to take the risk.

I love the incense bit at funerals. I'd like to buy whatever it is Catholic churches use.

Here you are - www.pilgrimgifts.co.uk/collections/incense-and-incense-boxes?srsltid=AfmBOopgj_uMTNIagtjfIpYpXMgP2IQr0AtvcmrMxrfDVwI4k8kRthxa

We watched. We are not Catholics but we respected the Pope very much. He was a good man.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 26/04/2025 12:17

Saint Pope might be a mistranslation of "Holy" in Italian or Latin.

People were speculating on why it didn't happen and making out like it couldn't happen. It could. Who do you think would stop Charles if he said he wanted to go? Maybe he didn't want to go, maybe he didn't feel well enough to go, maybe he thinks he can't go against his mother's protocol. None of us know.

And they can’t seem to be able to say the word Mass. Insistence on saying “service” with the Catholic commentator then saying “yes… at this point in the mass…”

It's a zinc-lined wooden coffin. Other popes of recent times have had three coffins - wood (cedar?), lead and oak.

viques · 26/04/2025 12:19

The Catholic Church is never going to budge on womens role within the church is it! Hard to spot a single woman among the red and purple. Though I suppose they were there in spirit as indicated by the impeccably ironed outfits. Unless wielding an iron is a prerequisite skill for entry into the priesthood. Sorry if this is seen as disrespectful, but those arial shots of the mourners really brought it home to me, they didn’t even seem to have put together a covey of nuns.

I thought the Pope mobile procession through the streets was very moving, I somehow felt that many people were there for personal reasons to honour a man for whom they had a very real affection above their respect for him as pope.

'Sanctus' = 'Holy'

Or even of “Holy Father”? (Santa Papa, if my limited memory of Italian is correct.)

It definitely wasn't navy blue, I don't think anyone would have thought about it if it had been navy. I know someone said the lighting can change how colours look but I'm not sure it could make dark blue/navy blue look like Trump's suit, although having said that I don't think it matters much in the grand scheme of things. Of all the things I don't like about Trump the colour of his suit doesn't really register.

Edited

Actually we put the subtitles on so they were there on the bbc but unfortunately that didn't switch off the talking over the speakers.
