Is there a type of healthy yogurt that’s not like yogurt?

I’ve never liked yogurt, the taste or the way it coats your mouth. But I’m trying to lose weight and on researching healthy snacks pretty much everything I’ve read recommends yogurt, or greek yogurt at least! Is greek yogurt like ordinary yogurt or is it different?

I love Greek yogurt, but it's just thicker yogurt, the texture is the same only more.

It's is very good on a diet because it feels like a luxury dessert and you can use it in place of cream and mayo.

heldinadream · 25/04/2025 14:07

It's higher in fat, has a fattier mouth feel. Try Skyr, it's high protein and definitely different to yoghurt. I'm not sure it's different enough given your feelings about yoghurt but it's definitely worth a try.
How do you feel about cottage cheese? Personally I loathe it but if you like it it's an excellent high protein low fat food.

WindingStair · 25/04/2025 14:10

I think the only difference is that Greek yoghurt has had more of the liquid drained off, so is less runny.

I’ll give Skyr a go, I might just have to try and force my feelings about yogurt down 😅 I haven’t tried cottage cheese, my mum used to eat it and just the look of it put me off!

Hmm maybe not then.

Fwiw full fat cottage cheese is only about 4% fat and delicious. The fat free stuff (which is the only on most supermarkets sell) is disgusting (imho).

Lidl excellent for full fat Greek yogurt and cottage cheese.

lashy · 25/04/2025 14:16

Skyr - the fat free and the 5% fat ones are both delicious.

Favoured versions will have higher sugar content.

MoneyBall1 · 25/04/2025 14:17

I keep trying yoghurt but I’ve never got on with it either. If you don’t like it, you don’t like it!

MushMonster · 25/04/2025 14:21

Try soya yougurts. Alpro is really nice.

MoominMai · 25/04/2025 14:24

Definitely give the normal fat Natural Skyr by Arla a go! It’s the best of the best. Thick, creamy and a neutral taste not that horrible tarty or watery taste. Lovely with some frozen or fresh fruit on the side in the morning 😋

Edited

Thanks I’ll give that a go!

Fage Total Yoghurt is Greek but lovely texture & taste 0% fat or 5% is good if dieting. Add fresh berries or different toppings & it tastes more like a dessert than a yoghurt due to its thickness. And packs a great protein punch too.

MovingBird123 · 25/04/2025 15:01

I buy Yeo Valley greek. So creamy. I never eat it plain though, always add things for texture and flavour. I might slice a banana on, or some chopped mango, or plum, any fruit. Then some nuts/seeds, or maybe a little bit of nut butter/tahini. Then I might add a little drizzle of honey.

Granted that may be a bit big for a weightloss snack, but great for breakfast.

lunaemma · 25/04/2025 15:04

I really like Greek yoghurt with lemon or blackcurrant curd stirred through it and some berries

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 25/04/2025 17:27

Right, I’ve a pot of Arla vanilla Skyr and 3 different bags of frozen berries (raspberries, strawberries and cherries) I’ll give it a go later. I went for vanilla skyr because I thought it might be a more palatable flavour than plain 🤣

Try flavoured kefir. I prefer it to 'normal' yoghurt.

FortyElephants · 25/04/2025 17:39

Why are you trying to eat something you don't like while on a diet? What's the point?

Springflowersyay · 25/04/2025 17:39

There are so many healthy, low calorie high nutrient foods you can eat.
People fail at diets as they’re not enjoying the food - they’re feeling deprived of the things they enjoy, as they’re eating things they don’t.

if you don’t like yoghurt, don’t eat it!!

stripeymonster · 25/04/2025 17:45

I have never liked yoghurt- but will happily eat the Fage 5% yoghurt, to me it tastes totally different.

I have Greek yogurt every day, but I can’t stand Fage. It’s far too sweet and has a really odd texture to me.

OP have you tried unflavoured Kefir? It takes 3 months of daily drinking for it to improve the numbers of healthy gut bacteria, I swear it’s the reason I dropped the last of my weight.

Chia seeds in yogurt (or a smoothie) are healthy and very filling, so they are good to add in as a snack.

WonderingWanda · 25/04/2025 17:49

Put it in a smoothie if you don't like it....or just buy protien shakes.

If you buy protien powder you can add it to porridge or make pancakes with protien powder, egg and blitzed up oats.

Crikeyalmighty · 25/04/2025 17:51

I could live on Fage Greek yoghurt 5% with berries or banana and Longley farm cottage cheese with chives - in fact at the moment using mounjaro I do pretty much have them every day

HugelyExpensiveCrystalDuck · 25/04/2025 19:05

I don’t like yogurt but I’ve just started to have Aldi 10% fat Greek yogurt with frozen blueberries and I love it.

I’ve learnt that there is Greek yogurt, delicious and nutritious and Greek style yogurt. Disgusting.

tartyflette · 25/04/2025 19:17

I prefer fromage frais (but not the 0 % stuff, bit chalky) the normal stuff is lower in fat and calories than cream.
And it’s only slightly tangy, I actually prefer it on strawberries etc as i find normal cream masks the taste of the fruit somewhat.
