Exercises etc for a flatter tummy

What really works? Doing various online standing exercise videos at home and my jeans zipper is still coming down. It’s almost as though as my core muscles become more toned my tummy sticks out a bit more! I am 5’1” size 10 and have put on nearly a stone over the winter which I put down to having to give up my yoga classes and walking due to family commitments and a virus that went on for a month. Will get back to regular classes and walks soon.
Diet is really good I think, very little empty calorie stuff , cook from scratch and hardly any alcohol.

Well if you have fat in that area, abs exercises aren't going to get rid of that, and you may need to look at your diet.

If you want abs exercises to tone your abs, try YouTube.

Doesn’t matter how you cook if eating in excess. Eating in deficit is the only way to get rid of fat in any area. You can tone your muscles though, and getting back to yoga will help. But you can’t spot reduce.

Are you engaging your core properly?
Pilates is fantastic for teaching you how but you need a session with an instructor one to one rather than on a group setting so they can correct your position.

I agree Pilates is great for toning your core.

But you need to be eating fewer calories. You can tone those ab muscles all you like, but only diet is going to get rid of any excess weight in that area. It's great that your food is cooked from scratch but if you're eating too much of it you're not going to shift the weight from that area.

Thank you for your replies and MN common sense. Will watch my portions get walking and book in for a regular yoga class again.

Toning muscles is not a thing. You can only grown muscles. Most “core” workouts are a load of crap imo. Abs built in kitchen, if you want them visible you have to lose the fat surrounding them. You can grow them through explosive/compound moves but you cannot tone muscle.

Leafy3 · 25/04/2025 22:45

Of course you can tone muscle, its definitely a 'thing'

MakingPlans2025 · 25/04/2025 22:55

When people talk about looking toned they mean reducing body fat and increasing muscle definition. You increase muscle definition by growing the muscle.

Leafy3 · 25/04/2025 23:09

But you can also slim your waist by toning it. No, you won't have a 6 pack or visible muscle definition without fat loss, but if muscles have become underused and saggy then toning will help
