BT mini hub, do I have to return it?

I was sent a BT mini hub after my village experienced an internet outage that lasted a week. BT have emailed asking me to send it back, it's switched off now but can I hang on to it, in case it's needed in the future if I have no internet? I have a guaranteed internet package so the guarantee means they have to provide means for me to have internet if there is a problem, so they would send a mini hub out again if I had a problem but it took four days to arrive last time, through the post.
I've googled and I am getting conflicting information from the BT website, one page said it is fine to hold on to the mini hub, another page said there is a fine for doing so?
Just thought I'd ask the MN collective before I try the BT chat facility (takes ages to speak to anyone)

I used to be with them and they told me to keep it and would reactivate should it be needed
a few years later when I swapped providers they did ask for it back

Thanks, was it BT who asked for it back?
