Sympathies @PickAChew

Not good but at least they'll have 4 years to show how incompetent they are.

ETA there will be by elections a plenty during that time.

Piggywaspushed · 02/05/2025 14:01

derxa are you aware that there were attempts to deport the Afghan boy from the Flintoff programme and that only Flintoff's intervention helped avoid this?

Very few asylum seekers are lucky enough to meet with the astonishing kindness and empathy , but also social influence , of Freddie Flintoff.

Saucery · 02/05/2025 15:01

Well, it’s certainly not nice to look at your county and realise what a huge proportion of thick, racist twats there are living in it Sad. Or at least voting in it.

You are not supposed to be nasty to them, apparently. Poor little dabs are very fragile.

I am bloody dreading Senedd elections next year.

Sorry, but yet again people have fallen into the trap of suggesting that immigration is the only topic worthy of discussion.

Eg Social housing is fucked because we stopped building it (no I dont mean affordable housing I mean traditional social housing).
We built 80k council houses in 1980. 80k!!!!!
It was down to 400 pa when John Major left office.
Blair did fuck all. What a bloody waste.
Brown and Healey began the reversal of this - unwinding Conservative legislation to allow councils to borrow more to build.
Cameron benefitted from this move albeit their numbers include affordable housing as well as actual social housing - but it was all on a very small scale basis that didnt catch us up to where we needed to be. Whereas 12,000 might have been built in 2012, 50,000 were bought under the revamped Right to Buy.

Labour have atleast corrected the policy legislation to allow councils to have the opportunity to build more, I'll give them that.

The NHS's productivity is down in part because austerity led to £ for capital investment in infrastructure being diverted to day to day spending. Buckets under holes in the roof stuff. We have fewer beds, scanners, up to date equipment because of this. You can employ more doctors but if you dont have the wards to put patients on you are pissing in the wind.

The Conservatives shifted more responsibilities on to councils (statutory ones) AND cut central funding leaving councils with no option but to charge their voters and businesses more.

And on.

Austerity ruined public services.
Brexit cut GDP and therefore available spending.

Both were policies that Farage would support (although neither went far enough for him) and somehow people trust his instincts.

Immigration - particularly those crossing the Channel - skims the bloody surface of outstanding issues. If it stopped tomorrow the problems above will not be resolved.

Its about time people start pressing Farage and friends on more meaningful topics.

This isn’t helpful. I’m not a Reform UKIP voter but I do remember a family where the father was a UKIP councillor. I’ll never forget their kindness when we were going through a tough time. Meanwhile my socialist ‘friend’ was spreading rumours about me.

Saucery · 02/05/2025 15:16

I actually feel a bit sick at the fact Lancashire has gone resoundingly Reform. And uncharacteristically sad for the Conservative candidate in my area who was closest in votes (by hundreds) to the faceless Reform bot who hid his address so we can’t see that he most likely doesn’t live anywhere near us. Jesus, what a sad, sad day for Lancashire. Four years is a long time for them to fuck up the County.

Sam Coates on Sky called it an element of the Brexit effect.

"Areas where there are lower number of graduates, much higher Reform UK vote"

A friend of mine is a Reform supporter. They are a kind person and would not hesitate to help me, but they are racist. It pains me to say that, but it is true.☹️

And I remember a Conservative MP who helped my family enormously. What’s your point? There’s always going to be decent outliers who you think would be better as Indeoendents.
The Labour and Conservative candidates live here, work here, make a real difference to the local area. I’ve already said upthread that it was a toss up between them and what decided me was the Conservative made some stupid lies up on his campaign leaflet about Labour governing the country. I could have voted for either and been perfectly happy with whoever won. They both work their arses off whether there’s an upcoming election or not.
Reform have been spamming FB with racist shite, had a stand in the middle of a major Easter event then whined about being moved on. They don’t represent me, they don’t care about Lancashire and right now I’m ashamed to be Lancastrian.

MsJinks · 02/05/2025 15:23

Used to live, and work in, Derbyshire- now a Reform led council. Sadly, much of my family still do. Not surprised at some of the area results, weirdly some are the lowest immigration rates in the country yet I know some people there are highly against immigration - so maybe that's led by fear of the unknown if I want to be kind. I am surprised at some areas though.
Can't imagine the very large county council being led by Reform well - hopefully that will put voters off at the GE!
I'm very glad I didn't choose to return a couple of years ago - I'd hate to know I lived in a Reform council area - sorry to those who do, unless of course that works for you.

Yes, I know someone like that who is my Mum's age, they are also a Trump supporter!

DuncinToffee · 02/05/2025 15:23

This will cheer up Farage

UK politics is now dynamically aligned with that of the EU.

It truly sucks.

Evenstar · 02/05/2025 15:26

Another Lancashire resident feeling utterly sick at the prospect of the next four years, two of my DC in Staffordshire as well.

I think I recall after the General Election the advice for those in constituencies with Reform MP’s was to bombard them with case work as they wouldn’t be interested or able to cope with it. I think those of us in Reform council areas could do similar, and show how unfit they are for public office.

Me too. How are people being taken in by them when they proudly avoid voting for Tories? Bonus points for the use of ‘poor dabs’ 😄

And do you think that was a reflection of their respective party’s views? Or their competence to govern?

Edited

I suspect she’s implying that said person is only called racist because she expressed concern about ‘undocumented young men’. Lots of Reform voters (I know you aren’t one - yet anyway - derxa) say that they get called racist for having ‘concerns’ about such things.

DuncinToffee · 02/05/2025 15:34

Reform UK now has control of seven councils:

Staffordshire
Nottinghamshire
Durham
Lancashire
Lincolnshire
Kent
Derbyshire

That says more about the kind of person you are @Saucery than anyone who voted Reform. Last year it was anyone who voted Conservatives who were insulted, now that Reform are gaining power it's anyone who votes for them who you now think are thick, racist twats.

People in this country have had enough of Labour and Conservatives. Love or hate Nigel Farage he has suddenly made politics a lot more interesting. This is a big wake up call for the Tories and Labour. They need to start listening.
