There are various sources saying that landlords can apply to sign up for the housing migrants scheme with a guaranteed rental income for 5 years.

Where these houses and flats are going to be found I have no idea as I was under the impression that there is a housing shortage.

Honestly, I'm beginning to think that Labour are making things a bit too easy for Reform.

DuncinToffee · 27/04/2025 20:20

The scheme was introduced natinwide in 2016

The Telegraph article which I think is one of your various sources states

Housing migrants in private accommodation is cheaper than hotels, costing as little as £14 per night compared to around £145.

The use of landlords was first introduced by the Conservatives more than a decade ago. It is being expanded under Labour as the Government faces a growing number of migrants crossing the Channel and seeks to end hotel use.

The landlord drive is targeted at HMOs – houses in multiple occupation – family property, former care homes, residential and student accommodation.

2dogsandabudgie · 27/04/2025 20:47

I think there were 227 migrants crossing the channel in the whole year of 2018 when they started recording numbers. Now we can get 3 times as many in one day crossing.

I thought for houses of multiple occupation a landlord had to apply to the Council for a licence and there were only allowed to be so many HMOs in one area.

I thought Labour were supposed to be stopping the boat crossings yet we have had more this year than during the same period last year.

Under the Tories? Surely not! 😂

What is your local Reform candidate proposing on immigratin and housing?

We're getting dangerously close to being asked if we'd rather house an immigrant or a Reform supporter 😀

I love Kemi. She’s great.

She's great for Labour / Reform!

cardibach · 27/04/2025 22:06

You may need to outline some things about her that you feel are great if you want anyone to understand that, @derxa.

Make the most of her, I honestly think she will be gone before the end of the year.

She is quite clearly gender criticall. That’s enough for me.

I’m not going to bring that discussion here - but is she? Wasn’t she women and equalities minister for a while? Wouldn’t that have given her opportunity to take some gender critical action if she really felt strongly about it?
I tend to think just using one area of ideology/political beliefs to judge someone rather than looking at their wider beliefs and competencies isn’t the best way to elect a leader. For some roles, maybe, but not for LOTO/PM.

That's a pretty low bar for a party leader. Saying she's GC, without her ever having done anything about it when she had the power.

I'm gender critical but it takes more than that to impress me. I find Kemi "some races are better than others" (sang to The Smiths tune, naturally) quite lacking in those other ways to impress me. And yes, I can admire someone even if I disagree with their politics.

She talks the talks but when she had the opportunity to do something she didn't walk the walk. In my book that makes her just a gobby hypocrite.

Saucery · 28/04/2025 06:22

I’m staying weeellllll away from anything GC on here Wink so I’ll use a comparison instead. I think Ed Davey is a fantastic champion for disability rights but I wouldn’t want him running the country.

What is your local Reform candidate proposing on immigratin and housing?

As Labour are in power I am more interested in Starmer "smashing the gangs" which is what he promised in their manifesto.

Neither the local Lib Dem candidate or Reform have mentioned immigration on their leaflets. Haven't had one from Labour or other parties yet.

LlynTegid · 28/04/2025 08:03

Yet what was done under a government when the Minister for Women and Equalities was Kemi Badenoch?

That's the problem though, the majority of voters tend to stick with Labour or Conservative because they feel safe with those 2 parties. It's a case of "better the devil you know".

I usually vote for Lib Dems locally but have never voted for them in a GE.

But you brought up the issue of where to house people seeking asylum with regards to the local elections.

You want them out of hotels, you don't want them housed in private rentals, so where would you house them?

And what are you various sources if it isn't the Telegraph article I posted?
